@@ttss5726 This doesn't just affect Baltimore, it's a port. Did you know all Mercedes, VW, BMW, and more import their cars here? Those cars now have to be taken to NY, and then auto trained back to Baltimore to be certified. Places like Norfolk are taking the over flow. You know, we just sent billions overseas, we can do it for a US bridge used by US citizens.

1100 tons in 3 weeks. Does anyone know the total weight of the collapsed part of the bridge?
@JariJuslin
@JariJuslin Ай бұрын
I've seen numbers from 3000-4000 thousand tonnes to 30000 thousands tonnes. Most likely the first one is ballpark for the parts that rest on the ship's bow and the latter for all the collapsed material. Much of the mass is from the crumbled concrete and asphalt from the deck and the shattered pillars.
@seeharvester
@seeharvester Ай бұрын
@@JariJuslin I think more like 50,000(?) tons of steel and who knows how much concrete and asphalt? Divided by 1100. Times X days. I think we are going to be here awhile. I'll go ice down the beer. You get out the lawn chairs.
@gedstrom
@gedstrom 28 күн бұрын
Of course, I am not in a position to know all the facts, but from what I have seen so far, I think it is the joint fault of both the bridge designers and the ship's owner. A bridge should be able take some pretty hefty impacts from a ship. The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco has some massive concrete pillars at the base protecting the steel work.

Liability should in fact apply to the state for their failure to include collision protection in the original design. Just look at the barriers surrounding the hydro towers in the river. The bridge would still be standing if it had similar protection. The workers would still be alive and life and shipping in Baltimore would still be going on as normal. The engineers who designed and the state officials who signed off on the bridge all have blood on their hands.

Um, the bridge was built in 1972, 52 years ago (I did the math for you, didn't think it was in your skill set) so not only do those people have blood on their hands but I expect most of them are already quite dead. After 9/11 it was discussed to put up protective bollards but it was deemed too expensive---you know how everyone wants the government to do all this stuff but then they whine like crazy about paying for it?
