Watching the US meal challenges makes me realize how expensive we pay for Canadian groceries. You did a great job! Very appetizing and healthy meals.
@LifeinYellowknife3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much!! I find the same thing.. they are just not relatable. I really appreciate your comment and I'm glad you enjoyed it. I know $50 for the week is not as flashy as $10 US so I wasn't sure if people would enjoy it or not haha!

@@LifeinYellowknife I’m now a subscriber! I’m very much enjoying your videos. I love Yellowknife so I love that you’re there. I’m in Vancouver so perhaps a bit more affordable for groceries but still expensive!

Agreed… no way am I getting away with ten dollars for 5 meals or what ever the us KZbinrs show. Makes me sad… also another KZbinr I watch just bought some property and what they bought would have been like 1 million here. I checked the prices and they aren’t even close to that price. 😒 Anyways! Thank you for your videos! I have subscribed!

For the yeast… I make sure my water is quite warm and I don’t stir it. I feel like it doesn’t turn out well for some reason. And when I want to rise my dough I have the oven on at 350 and put my bowl with dough covered in suran wrap in the middle of the oven, so the heat keeps the bowel warm.

I love that these are prices that I can actually get at my grocery stores. There are so few Canadians that share grocery hauls! I’m dairy free too, so I get the cheese less pizza 😂
@LifeinYellowknife4 жыл бұрын
Hahaha it really doesn’t make much difference without cheese in my opinion! I only want to taste the pineapple lol!! I do struggle with missing things like sour cream and milk with cookies and stuff tho lol! There are no good alternatives here (I hate coconut milk so and lactose free options make me sick now too). Anyway, thank you for your comment! :-)

Try adding your sugar in with the yeast when proofing. Yeast loves to eat sugar and really puffs up. I started doing that and all my baked goods are rising alot now. No more hockey pucks..lol.

@@LifeinYellowknife my go-to 3x a week for family of 7. Makes 2 loaves. 11/3 cup warm water, 2 tsp active dry yeast, 2 tsp sugar - stir gently until mixed. Wait 2 minutes. Add that to a bowl of 1 beaten egg and 3/4 tsp salt. Add in 3-31/2 cups flour ** 1 cup at a time - usually I use 31/4 cups. Knead 4-5 minutes until it feels like playdough ( I use 1 hand). Rest covered for 1 hour. Grease 2 bread pans or 1 round. Gently push down dough and onto lightly floured board or counter. Cut into 2 loaves and place in pans. Rest covered 20 30 minutes. 350 F for 25 30 minutes. For pizza only 1st rise then use as crust - 12" circle. Dinner rolls - after 1st rise, make 15 "balls", rest 30 minutes, 350F for 20 - 25 minutes. For cinnamon buns- after 1st rise, do as you did for yours , cut 12 , rest 30 minutes. 350F for 25 minutes.

I am not a Baker so forgive me if my question sounds silly but can you give me detail as to when you add the sugar after or before the first rise?
@michellejanzensignaturesug16833 жыл бұрын
Awesome video, thanks! I'm not sure if anyone mentioned it but if you put your sugar in with your yeast while it is proofing the yeast can "feed" off the sugar and it should help it proof. I do it all the time! Also a warm kitchen helps.

Was so happy to see a Canadian version with Canadian prices! I live far from any discount stores as well and was happy to see you shopping at coop! I spend roughly 80 per week for my family of 3 which is super tough but doable. I spend alot of time meal planning and looking thru flyers. I only buy what's on sale unless I absolutely need it. Anyways I sure appreciated seeing your video!

hi this is Sue, when making your bread put a little oil in your bowl and don't kneed it just punch it down divide up to what your making and let it rise again and then bake it, Just a tip, never add salt to your yeast it will kill it, add it to your flour and mix well, and you water should be between 110-115 so just water, 1tbsp sugar to feed your yeast, stir, and let rest for 8 minutes.
@LifeinYellowknife3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Sue! I’ve tried to punch it down before but it didn’t work for me! It didn’t rise very well the second time! Maybe I’ll try it again. :-) thanks so much!

I love watching another Canadian do these challenges! It’s really hard to stick to a budget the Americans use given our dollar is worth 30c less and our food is much pricier. Particularly dairy and meat. Btw I’m not an expert by any means but I think for yeast to activate it needs something to feed on… that’s why most people add a tsp of sugar to the water and yeast. May help your doughs rise better
@LifeinYellowknife2 жыл бұрын
Yes totally! It’s crazy how much less our dollar is worth here and how high food prices are. I have a comparison challenge in the works. Thank you for this tip! I’m always grateful for help with cooking stuff! I can certainly improve hahaha!!
