caught my best friend walking behind me with his safety off on a Remington automatic 30-06, He said "I forget to take it off sometimes so I leave it off". I chastised him but made him walk in front. Later after driving back to camp in the truck I noticed he still had his safety off and the gun was loaded in the truck! I told him I was going home and if he wanted a ride (13 hours from home in Northern Canada) he better pack. Not a word was spoken all the way and 30 years later we have never spoken again (he thinks I'm a jerk). Safety First!

Great stories, Steve thanks for taking the time to tell them! We (MY Dad and I) were duck hunting in a blind on shore and some clowns on the other side of the slough, seemingly unaware we were there, took a shot at some ducks out in front of us. They missed, and good thing we were a long ways away, pellets rained down on the water in front of us. I said "WHOA!" and ducked down a bit. My dad stood up and promptly fired 3 shots back in their direction, then sat down. I said "What did you do that for?" He said "If they didn't know we were here, they know now: and if they DID know, now they know i'll shoot back." I didn't ask any follow-up questions, he looked sorta pissed....

Back in the early 2000s, I hunted near the Gang Ranch with my Dad and younger brother. Camped in the woods in a small camper on our Tacoma. Went hunting one morning with an older fella from Prince George. He was a friend of my Dad's friend. The morning hunt took us probably 3 hours and about 7km of hiking through mild terrain. I don't remember what caliber rifle he was carrying, but I'd guess it was a .270. Anyway, as we were approaching the location where my Dad was waiting with his truck to pick us up, as he walked in front of me and began lowering his rifle to remove the bullets, his rifle fired with the bullet striking the ground just feet away from the truck's front tire. The short trip back to camp we were all quiet. I was in my early 30s and my Dad... I don't remember if he said anything, but looking back I think he probably thought that since no one got hurt that there wasn't much to be said. That evening, the fella with the bad rifle said he was leaving to head back home. I heard moments later that he felt really bad about what had happened. He hadn't accidentally pulled the trigger so he deduced that his trigger mechanism was faulty and that he could no longer trust his rifle. He did the right thing in my opinion. Since then I have made it a point to have my rifle checked regularly.

Steve, Thanks for the info and the laughs. Too Funny! "I didn't know if the safety was on, so I pulled the trigger." Uhh .... Shurrr. Sorta like (if) a person went on a scary, wild ride at the fair. "I didn't know if I would fall out if I didn't use the safety bar, so I didn't use it." Guess what someone else heard and repeated those last words of his because the only thing still moving from the busted body on the ground, was his lips. As far as I know .... that didn't happen, but your story indicates that brand of stupidity is alive and kicking. : ) Loved your stories. Glad you are here to tell the stories, Steve. Whew! Too close for comfort. As a professional photographer, my husband was asked to snap some photos of a hard rock band (the name of the band had the word "monster" in it) if that gives you a clue. They were wickedly loud for the area they were in (city limits, outdoors) and the band was asked by several bystanders to adjust the volume output. They would not and did not, seemed they raised the volume and less than an hour later his eardrum blew out. I repeat everything to him two or three times. When I hear my words repeated several times I have the opportunity to self evaluate my own words and whether or not they came out as I intended them to.(like a rehearsal). It's like I'm taking a self improvement course called "Improving Your Dialogue". I can edit my words, and even condense my reply to "Never mind, not important". That's the up side. : ) Your girlfriend might appreciate the irony in this.

Growing up in Utah and Montana I met many people whose greatest passion in life was hunting. When I was 10, our neighbors two houses down was full of the most dedicated hunters one could ever hope to find. It was a household of boys and young men all wanting to outdo each other and would eat, drink, and sleep camping and hunting. It was the mid 80’s and late evening on the opening day of duck season. Dukes of Hazzard was on when I heard the sound of sirens circling our hidden cul de sac in a fruitless search of an address. I followed my dad, who was a pastor and knew all the neighbors well, as he headed out the door and noticed a commotion in the garage of this neighbor. My dad beelined a path into the neighbor’s garage and didn’t notice me running behind. The sights and sounds were startling and difficult for me to process. There was a young man collapsed on the steps exiting the kitchen into the garage and blood poured from a wound above his heart. His mom was making a sound of pain I cannot describe, but frightened me with its unfamiliar guttural sounds. There was additional screaming and yelling coming from inside the house at the bottom of stairs. The young man who was already dead had just returned from a day of duck hunting and had taken the youngest brother, who was 8 years old. When they got home, the older brother had been imitating a bird in flight and his 8 year old brother picked up a .22 rifle in their basement, aimed, and pulled the trigger. The bullet hit his brother directly in the heart. In shock, this young man had ran bleeding up his stairs, grabbed his car keys, and then collapsed dead just heading out the door. The ambulance finally found the one road bringing them onto our street and this garage. It was just a month or two ago that I noticed this familiar name online in the local paper of the town where this occurred many years back. The “Wanted by Law” section of the paper featured a picture of this wild eyed, unkempt man who was once a sobbing 8 year old boy yelling that he was going to kill himself after realizing that he had killed his older brother.,

Terrible. I just can't get my brain around a family that was all about hunting yet somehow managed to skip the gun safety lessons, such as "Never aim at something you don't want to kill." I work as a film armorer occasionally and one of the things I hammer into people is that very thing. I don't care if it's a rubber gun or an airsoft or a paintball gun: never aim directly at anybody! It's just a bad habit and an accident waiting to happen. Brandon Lee would still be alive today if the people on the set of The Crow had followed that maxim. So sad.

Nancy Frye - The father in this family was quite sick as he had been been dealing with muscular dystrophy for many years and was confined to the house. The boys were a bit wild and as an adult looking back I see how the mom was completely overwhelmed by 6 extremely active and independent sons, a very sick husband, worked full time, and tried to spend time with the two girls in the family as well. What I’m getting at, I don’t think there had been any parental guidance with all those guns. The boys had a greater impact raising each other than the parents.

One day my brother was gearing up to go out hunting. I was too little to go hunting at the time but i knew some of the rules as well. Later that evening my brother came back and set his 4-10 up against the house. I remembered one of the rules saying to unload all guns when you come out of the woods,so in my little dumb ass head I figured the gun was empty. ( i was probably 10). while my brother was holding a squirrel that he shot not paying attention to me. I picked up the gun and aimed it at the squirrel.I dont remember pulling the trigger but i did. I crumpled over like a drunk university student puking into a toilet. I have been around loud decibels all my younger life, but never felt such actual physical pain in my right ear. My hearing is messed up. All due to a split second situation, I can’t hear properly in a pub or busy restaurant. I require ear plugs 🔌 when I go to a concert or it sounds like the ‘squelch’ is turned to max. Sorry for my ramble.

If someone lacks common sense, do NOT allow them to put their grubby mitts onto a loaded firearm. Had one of those types horn his way in on a day hunt my best friend and I were going on... it was my buddy's call... but, I warned him to NOT give that boy a loaded gun. The clown nearly shot his foot off (Marlin .30-30). AFTER we schooled him, he chambered, cocked it, safety OFF, and booger-hook inside the trigger guard while he was tripping along by himself. Stepped over a log and "it went off". Chewed his booger-hook up a bit from the recoil, but, he managed to only kill the soil on the trail. Told my buddy, I TOLD you, do NOT give that boy a loaded gun (it was my buddy's gun he'd borrowed).

Hey Sir, Appreciate the stories. Glad to see you made it with no injuries. As a suggestion, maybe you could tell us some stories about hunters you guided who had their shit together and worked with you like a will oiled machine. I bet they would be pretty interesting! Again thanks. Cordially, Denis Berte' SF(Ret)

Glad to hear you've made it through the scrapes Steve. It strikes me it might be something with southern doctors and ported firearms, as a good buddy had a doctor from Alabama touch off a .340 Weatherby beside him when they were chasing bears up on the north coast. As you related, it's memorable to say the least.... He likened it to being hit on the side of the head with a 2x6. After that as I recall, he had a much different opinion on ported rifles and had a different set of personal rules for those who showed up in camp with one. Thanks again and good hunting this fall Steve.

I've been listening to the Sasquatch videos for so long now(years I think). When you first started them. But I came across this one today and really enjoyed the hunt stories. Love the bear stories and the arrow down the mouses throat. Great stories. Think I'll go back to the hunt stories again for awhile! Thanks for all of them Steve!

That story about the 300 WBY MAG going off when he loaded it, The vanguard series had a problem with loading the rifle. You have to take it off safety to load or unload it. It was some time later that Weatherby made a fix for the problem.

You’d be surprised how many transfer cases in pickups get blown out in guides pickups in Wyoming, we’d have safety talks with all the hunters the night before opening day after supper in the dining tent ,and my boss would give it and it was pretty straight forward, and he stressed no round in the chamber while riding inf your guides truck. It was a ranch hunt 1 guide 2 hunters and it wasn’t every year that some hunter blew out some guides transfer case ,but it happened, and thank god no one got hurt but a 7 MM going off in a truck cab I guess is a life changing experience

"Staring like a codfish that got hit in the head with a rock" May be my favorite new quote. That aside. I have done a bunch of horseback hunts for elk over the years and it has always surprised me how many people show up without a clue about riding. Clueless and the Rockies of Montana, what could go wrong?

Hey Steve here's one for you, when I was 14 a friend of my dad's was at our house for opening deer season. We were all standing their and my dad's friend racked a shell in his 30:06 semi auto and it went off right between my legs into the ground. My mother who hated deer season, came out of the house and had a freaking melt down. For years after that I was always Leary when loading a gun thinking it might go off when loading it. I've been around guns my whole life, but being 14 at the time was hard to rap my mind around what happened that day being my first ever time hunting on my own.

Brett, here's one for you .... Picture a pond with twenty five guys (city slickers) surrounding it (with guns), snow on the ground. waiting for geese to land on the pond. The geese land and twenty five rifles go off suddenly. Yes they were shooting (across) the pond from each other and realistically most of those city slickers should have been full of holes. As the smoke settled the shocked, yet relieved land owner who had lost all color in his face was there with them and stated "Thank God. It's nothing short of a Miracle that Nobody was shot!" That's right, No body, not a man, not a goose, not a gander. Nearly fifty years ago, Ohio farm.

The dude was from Louisiana. They don't have mountains there. You have to go up on a bridge if you want to look out over any terrain. Mountains probably freaked him out. Conversely, I lived there for a year and could not stand the fact that there were no mountains. The trees and swamps made me feel claustrophobic. Give me the desert and the mountains any day.

Not a guide but there have been a few people I hunted with once for a shortened hunt and swore to never hunt with again. Horses can be fickle but if you find the right horse, it's almost like they can read your mind and love you to bits. I wish I could find a second horse like that.

Hi Steve. I like the story about the dudes horseback riding. I use to take people out on trail rides and there was some stupid sh#*t that went on. I would let someone ride one of the horses for experienced riders because they told me they were experienced, then to find out that they never really rode that much. Boy I use to give them a piece of my mind of the danger of riding a spirited horse. Take care Steve.🐴

USMC, Camp Pendalton, 1965, night shoot, 4 am, in the barracks, and the guy to my right is pointing his M-1 at the guy on my left. We both told him not to do that and he blew it off and said the gun is empty and he said I'll show you. So he pulled the slide and out popped a live round. 3 very white faced Marines didn't get any sleep. Never ever point a gun at someone unless your ready to pull the trigger.

I relate 110% at your story about how your hearing. My unit came under attacks in the Persian gulf and I don't know how much high explosive was in the incoming missiles but goddamnit they were loud, and I lived for months a few yards from a huge diesel generator. My wife talks like a normal woman. I have said "what?" Like 1000000x in our marriage. Lucky she is a good sport. And my ears ring all the fuckin time too. But the loudest gun I situation I ever had was a guy shooting tin cans on top of the a frozen river on a small sandbar under a concrete RR bridge. Literally couldn't hear at all for like one or two hours. Love your stories all of them. Stay safe. IGY6

Almost sounds like that hunter that had issues walking over rocks, may have been blind in one eye. I have that issue and as long as you are on reasonably level ground, it's not too bad, but as soon as the ground becomes uneven, the lack of depth perception makes it a real challenge to keep your balance. I can't tell how high a curb is on a sidewalk. No way I'm going mountain climbing.

I'm a horse woman from birth. Always given the "problem" horses that others can't handle/ ride. Can't count the times I've been thrown! Lucky to only had serious injuries three times. Love the sense of humor. I think it's kinda funny that they let us ride them. They have so much power compared to us and when idiots do stupid things trying to ride, you can almost see the horse roll their eyes, "ok dummy, your done". It's hilarious (when NO one gets permanently injured) to see the horse just be done with someone! I totally get it😂😂
