I nearly blew my right ear drum while stalking a 6 pointer into a creek bed. I was on the ledge surrounded by alders. Got my shot in and it was like a bomb went off. This is my hunting and livestock dispatching rifle, so I am use to the loud noise it makes. Never had that gun blasted that loud before. I figure it might have to do with the location and air pressure that day. My ear had ringing for 2 years and acts up when I am tired, some 10 yrs later. But like Steve, I can still hear a mouse fart 25 yards away. But, have a hard time understanding my wife's words sometimes. It has to do with sound pitch she is using and the background sounds, that cut out certain words.

Steve I know exactly what you mean about certain things being just freakin funny and you have no control over the laughter! My mom used to say I had a sick sense of humor because people wiping out just sent me into hysterics. It wasnt funny because or if they got hurt , I felt bad, but it was the expression on their face, the awkward flailing body positions and even the sound. The endorphin and release from those times is priceless and good for the body! Man am I glad I'm not alone in that sense of humor.

@@orcvsivstitia7608 After that I rebuilt an abandoned 8 foot skiff and hunted out of my own duck blind over 100 yards away. But I can tell you that #2 birdshot will skip off the water surface that distance and still sting when it hits your thighs, even through long John's, blue Jean's, and hip waders and a waist high cedar tree camouflaged duck blind is no protection either (wounded Black duck swimming away and popping its head out of the water occasionally to grab air). That one he got after about 6 more shots and stinging me on the 3rd shot. After the age of 8, he couldn't outshoot on flying target up. Got my first shotgun for my 11th birthday, a Cooey .410 single shot, wish I still had it. Maybe someday.

I laugh when people fall too. Not just a chuckle but I can go into full on cry laughing if it is a comical enough fall. I can't help it. It happens every time! Even to myself. I fell about a month ago gawking at the Space Needle, taking pictures. It was dark and sort of foggy and absolutely awe striking. Looking up taking pictures, I hear my daughter exclaim "MOM!", as I stepped of the curb and went down onto my hands and knees! BAM!! Instant pain shooting through my body and my first reaction was, of course, check to make sure my phone was ok! Duh! And then rolled onto my back looking up at my daughter who is desperately trying to not laugh which causes me to burst out laughing, literally rolling on the floor, on the ground in front of the Space Needle. Wish I had video of that.... Bless you Steve! Keep the stores coming. (PS: Dear Space Needle, if you have surveillance video of that moment I'd gladly pay for a copy.)

The def part of the ear ringing or like mine, a whistling (like a field of crickets) is two of the same frequencies canceling each other out. Put some headphones on and listen to a sine wave generator that goes from 20 hz to 20 kHz on KZbin. Somewhere around 1.5-3khz you will notice what I’m talking about. Usually one ear is effected at a different freq than the other. Soft consonants are what you can’t hear. I need to watch people’s lips while they talk sometimes. Ps. My lovely spouse has razor sharp ears and lets me know when grouse are peeping in the distance. Best hunting dog I’ve ever had lol

Constantly having to say "What?" to low talkers and what Steve described about shitty acoustics in restaurants and the like is spot on- bigger rooms with hard ceilings and walls is horrible for me, and if they have a radio on in the background or several tables are having conversations I may as well just sit there and nod when people are talking, cant hear a damn thing. I was with my Father-inlaw - and on a moose hunt. We were in a stand - and the moose was out 200+. It was his time to shoot. I watched as he did not remember which way the safety was - and before he could take time to shoot, the moose walked off. It was HIS 30-06. He had it, since he was 20+. His wife bought it for him the year they got married. That night - at the cabin, I emptied his rifle and dry-fired it enough to see all the settings it had. A 3 position safety. I had all Mil-surps - Safe - Go - no medium! And yeh - I am tone deaf - but always a loud ring in my head.

I've been shot at over a dozen times. I've been shot once. Idk the caliber, it was a hand gun. I couldn't go ask the guy lol! That's growing up in the hood... I'm surprised hunters accidentally shoot each other - I've never mistakes a person for an animal and I don't check the safety by pulling the trigger. I don't hunt because I'm a vegan but for purposes of survival I have stocked deer just to be sure if society fell I could eat. In North Dakota I snuck up on a deer... I actually got within my kill range with my bow and took aim before the deer stood up. So I am somewhat confident that I could do if I had to. I like you Steve cause you a real one. I don't see you posted in a tree over a barrel of corn and sipping wild turkey all day... You actually hunt. I can respect that even though I don't agree. I appreciate.you sharing knowledge because no one knows what the future holds and I like to be ready.

When I was in high school, 10th grade, me and a buddy went quail hunting and we took turns being the bird dog and it my my turn to bird dog. I dont know what he decided to do, no bird flew, but he fires the 12ga, loaded with birdshot and I feel a tremendous amount of heat, come past my right arm. I imagine the shot was pretty close to my arm and would have done some damage, had it hit me, but laterifter hearing from a veteran police officer, years later, who survived a 12ga blast, he too said the was a tremendous amount of heat that came from the barrel. Form that day forward, I dont let anyone get behind me, with a firearm, unless I know their qualifications.

I had a guy do that to me with a 300 Winchester mag. We were trying to find a lost hunter, so my freind lowered that rifle between us and fired. Barrel was below my head, muzzle blast put me to the ground. I got up and couldnt hear a thing but a humming sound. I have a freind who was out hunting with his family, and his brother and his young daughter were sitting on a huge boulder. And a stray bullet bonces of the boulder and hit that young girl between her legs. She lived but was a terrible ordeal getting her out. They say it was a stray bullet. I believe some one was scoping them out with a rifle, instead of using binoculars. And it accidentally went off. Great stories.

My grandfather I never knew, nick named "Two Gun" lived in eastern Kentucky. He died an early death before I was born. After my grandfather died, my uncle, a young boy then, used to go to the park where my grandfather's friends would hang out and trade stories, some of them World War I vets. My uncle noticed that one of my grandfather's friends walked with a limp. My uncle assumed that it was from a war injury. One day, when the other men had not yet arrived, my uncle asked this guy with the limp how he got it. My grandfather's friend, looked around hesitantly, and finally murmered... "Your dad (my grandfather) shot me." My uncle just stared at him, not knowing what to say, trying to take in what he had just been told. The man went on to explain, "Well... Two Gun did not shoot me... on purpose." He said, "We were both drunk as hell, and your dad pulled out one of his pistols, and proceeded to shoot it into the ground beside us. One of the bullets hit a rock, ricocheted, and hit me in the leg."

I got tinnitus too, always sounds like someone behind my right shoulder running their thumbnail down one of those cheap hard plastic combs- reeeal slow like ...tic tic tic tic tic... always there but most time I can ignore it. Got it from racing chainsaws and shooting w/o good hearing protection. Since a lot of tinnitus is due to the little hairs in your ear getting broken off and laying down on top of the good little hairs and causing them to signal sound you can sometimes cause the tinnitus to diminish by doing inversion, like you do for a bad back. In my case it has almost made the tinnitus go away , at times it has made it worse--all because inversion re-settles the broken off hairs (forgetting what those are called) sometimes in a better aligment. As far getting shot or shooting yourself goes my dad never owned a pistol and never got one for us kids to learn on. He felt that pistols are much more dangerous to be around because of the short barrel length, his thinking was long guns would be much more safe in the hands of a bunch of kids out hunting together.
