In fact is half and a half. Central America is defined by the Cancer and Capricorn tropics. In Mexico the Cancer tropic cross at Sinaloa, Durango, Coahuila and Tamaulipas States (more or less). From that line to the north is north America, and below that is central America.

@@TrueMexico Yeah, as I noted elsewhere, there’s a similar word pronounced with the soft “c”, tácito. It means Tacit. Accent on the A, C sounds like S. Entiendes? Also, mi amigo, you might find the -cita/cito diminutive interesting. I haven’t figured out the rules for this form, but it’s quite common, as in Jovencita for Jovena. Or Hombrecito for hombre (I sometimes call my friends’ sons “hombrecito”, little man.) Perhaps a kindly native speaker will explain why -ito/ita is sometimes used and -cito/cita is used other times.

Implicit&softened language is used in business or formal interactions (including people you do not know). It's essentially an offshot of "good manners". But Mexicans are pretty direct and even confrontational among friends/family and even with strangers if in the middle of a relaxed social event (in joking manner). This switch in behavior might confuse unsuspected foreigners.

Generally our Mexican culture abide by “No pelos en la lengua.” I’ve never been in a business setting in Mexico so I assume is kept professional, but when it comes to friends and family - they will go straight to the point and tell you how it is. Sometimes that can be a good thing and sometimes is plain rude depending on the context.

I remember that when I was living in Taipei City, I talked about the whole "American" designation problem with many people from the US, they were trying to find a proper designation and were very apologetic about knowing who annoying it was to say they were "Americans" since it would come from a very pedantic and proud place. I am Californian and you are correct. In the US we refer ourselves as Americans. But in fact Canadiens, Bolivian, Mexicans, we are all Americans. Also, Mexico is not part of Central America, Mexico is in fact North America.

The rule I tell my kids is, in Spanish, say "estadounidense", because that is how you refer to an American in Spanish, not to be confused with "Americano", which refers to North and South America. We can't say "Unitedstatsian" because that is not an English word. It's just using proper Spanish and English. A couple times I have been asked about this by Mexicans, why Americans use the term American, and I remind them that the full name for Mexico is, "The United States of Mexico", and they call themselves Mexico from the beginning of the nation, just like the United States of America did. Mostly, we stay out of such conversations unless asked.

Something considered not rude or taboo, but downright appalling, is kicking your kids out of the house when they turn 18, or any family member, really (unless there's a really good reason). To many mexican parents, telling your young adult offspring to piss off to college or constantly urge them to go live on their own is unthinkable. Indeed, in many homes, marriage is the rite of passage to leaving your parent's house. Of course, a lot of young people will want to live on their own, but they usually do it out of their own choice, and keep close contact with the family. Indeed, many just move in with their grandma or lonely aunt or uncle.

You can even say "soy gringo", as calling someone a gringo in Mexico is not an insult, it's just another word for American. Not only that, but we Canadians are also gringos. Also, at least in northern Mexico - and I can't speak for other regions - they say "norteamericano" for Americans, and it doesn't mean North American, it just means U.S. American. And I haven't figured out yet how you do say North American in Mexico.

I've traveled months at a time in 6 Asian countries. I noticed that when asked where I was from, I'd reply "the US" or "the United States", and it would confuse some locals. The'd ask "American?" or "America?" I'd have to say yes so they understood. Then most would get excited and exclaim "Oh American!!" and sometimes to my dismay, "Obama!" 4:37 The word is 'taquito' because in Spanish the letters don't change sound, so when a word gets something added on that might change the sound of a letter, the letter changes. A "c" followed by an "i" will sound like "si", therefore in when adding 'ito' to taco, the "c" must change to a "qu" to achieve the same sound so instead of tacito (tah-si-to) it's taquito (tah-ki-to)

As US citizen, I would never refer myself as anything but "American. Latinos have to understand that English and Spanish are two languages. You should not apply your own language rules to another. If in English, I say "American" and Spanish "Estadosunidense." Another way to look at it if I were go to Latínamerica, I can call any Vietnamese or Korean a "chino" Or an Indian from India an "hindue" Even the word "Indio" is somewhat of derogatory word. Here's a little English to Spanish dictionary that will be helpful: Estadosunidense - American Estadounidos - America América (El continente) - The Americas (North and South America are two distinct continents ) Hindú - Indian Religión Hindú - Hindu Indio - Native American Chino - Asiatico Chinos de China - Chinese

America is one continent. I really don't know when or how the US educational system started to fail. Even in the Olympics the circle for America is one. It goes beyond than just language. North, central and south are just subdivisions. Just as you would say western or eastern Europe. Besides, your country 's name is the United States of America, not the United States of North America. When our country (I am American also) was named they did so, thinking about America as a new continent, not thinking about a subdivision of the north.

Euphemisms are used widely in Mexico. The diminutives are included, but also we have a lot of phrases and words to say politely things that would sound rough if they'd be said directly. Expressions like "the difunto, o el muertito" to avoid words like dead body, corpse or carcass, for example. Most of us were raised with a sense of respect for others, and political correctness, so we avoid sensitive topics. But we also used to laugh and make jokes with that too, as you can see on memes... 9:40 question: i've been told that us citizens are referred to as norte-americano. my question is...then how is that different that referring to oneself as "american" considering that both Mexico and Canada are in North America? I've had the discussion with some european friends who also don't like US citizens referring to themselves as "Americans" But I'd like to offer two points, if I may. one.....US citizens do not commonly attempt to tell people of any other country, how they should refer to themselves. It is simply a shortened version so that it can be said more easily. "Burgers" (pun intended) are a shortened manner of saying "Hamburger"....and as we all know, they are made of beef rather than ham. Well, the original name is reportedly, "Hamburg minced beef sandwich" due to the story that it was developed by US immigrants originating from Hamburg Germany who was selling food for factory workers and found that placing the minced beef patty in between sliced of bread or a bun made it very easy for the workers to eat. the point is....that "burger" has been shortened multiple times from the original "Hamburg minced beef sandwich" and perhaps you can thing of other examples of shortening of words, titles, or phrases that is very common in all languages. The idea that it MUST be the case that US citizens reason for referring to themselves as "American" is due to arrogance actually speaks to xenophobic stereotypes in which not a single thought has ever been put to any other possible reasons. Rather, people accept the explanation of arrogance hands down without a second thought simply because they want this to be the case. I hope you read this and consider that there is another reason.... EDIT: To add more weight to my post.... please consider this as well. people from Mexico....and people throughout the world refer to citizens of Mexico as "Mexicans" without a second thought....without any issue. However, the name of the country is "United Mexican States". I hope I've described and articulated the situation to the point that its obvious.

Many countries have protectionist economic laws which is how their politicians served their constituents. In the US, any foreigner can come in and buy real estate and companies. It's like it's not my country for foreigners such as Chinese own and control most of it. This means high rents, few housing choices, poor employment opportunities, and a sense of alienation that I don't belong. However, it's the country I was born in and served. Any country that doesn't protect the interests of those born in it first is not true and noble. While corruption has always been a worldwide condition, it's one's home country that should be geared for citizens to be first who have first dibs at housing, employment, and business opportunities. I agree with countries like Mexico and Thailand. Tourism is a great thing, but these aren't regular tourists I'm talking about in the US.

I totally understand the American thing because citizens of the United States are U.S. Americans or United Statians It's just like if Italy was the United States of Italy and the Spanish were considered just Spanish, the British were just considered British, the Germans just German, etc. They're all Europeans just like Mexicans, Canadians and Argentinians and every Country in between are ALL Americans because they're ALL Citizens of the American Continent.

Except there is no continent of America. Which for me is where the argument completely goes off the rails. There is North America and South America and they share almost no political, economic, or cultural identity. No one in the US or Canada has any concept of being anything other than their nationality and a North American-maybe. The idea that we share literally anything with South America or the concept of the Americas is completely unknown. America/n is simply an abbreviation of the full name. But I am OK with the resentment because I understand how it comes off as a usurping of the name and there is plenty to resent given The U.S's actions in the world stage historically and currently. But 360 million (Canada and the US) people have zero concept of a shared identity relating to any concept of the Americas. So it's fine to have a perspective but there are probably just as many or more people where the concept of the Americas is meaningless as there are that it does. My own personal experience is about 50% of people I have asked in Mexico and South America have any identity relating to the Americas. But its close to zero for anyone who has actually visited the US and Canada before. That said while the logical part of my brain is screaming it makes no sense I don't use the phrase American to identify myself. But ironically that is the phrase just about every Spanish speaker uses to identify me. lol.

I really don't care if they say they're American, point is made and we can continue with the conversation. If someone gets offended by that, the problem is not the "American" part, might be racist instead. Because yeah, there is racism in Mexico too. Most Americans I meet say things like "I'm from Kansas", "Florida", etc. not straight forward "American", guess it's like here, people from Queretaro are Queretanos, people from Puebla are Poblanos, etc. etc. so guess it's like that too, however if a foreigner asks a Mexican where they're from (outside of Mexico) 99.9999% of the time the answer will be "I'm Mexican", if the question comes from another Mexican then they will mention the city they are from.

The whole "american" thing depends on the point of view, in my teenage years I really subscribed to the whole "people from the US shouldn't call themselves american because thats the whole continent", mainly because of influence from my parents. However as I grew older and ananlyzed things, I realized it's not really wrong, it's just a matter of perspective. Hear me out: - People from the US don't have a lot to work with in their country's name in order to create a solid or highly specific denomination for themselves. Their country's name is United States of America, it's very vague compared to other countries, it almost feels like a description more than a name. - In spanish the name of the continent is usually coined as just "America", however, in english it's usually refered to as "the americas". Hence english speaking countries including the US usually CAN make a distinction between a country and a continent dependind on wether you say "America" or "the americas". - In spanish we have words to refer to US citizens without using the word America, mainly "Estadounidense", or the more informal "gringo". That said you can't do the same in english, how do you call them in english without using the word America? United statetan? State unitee? unified statesman? USAn? there's no way to make a convincing denomination that doesn't sound like total trash. Conclusion: - Calling a US citizen "american" makes perfect sense in english, and it's actually the most logical term in that language. - They've used it their whole lives out of necessity since they can only work with the words "united", "states" and "america" to create a gentilic word. America is by far the most sensible word to do this, so I think we should cut them some slack in this regard - Very commonly we use the word Gringo even though some of them really don't like that term, and find it despective. So guys..... you can't really go around demanding foreigners to drop their favored gentilic while at the same time we call them unnoficial names behind their backs, that's double standard. - As an example: it's like if there was a guy whose official name was "Human being", and goes around calling himself "human". I think you could see the term is not out of ignorance or a sense of egotistical pride, but a necesity born out of his unespecific name. So yeah, guys, just think about it.

Yes, the entire world knows the US as, 'America.' I never really seen a problem with telling people I'm American for that's what we're called while this entire side of the world is, 'The Americas,' which is like saying Asia, Europe, and Africa. America just refers to the continent that makes up the lower 48 states. It's weird being, 'American,' when one thinks about it, but thinking is not something most of us engage in when it's a me me me culture based on anti-intellectualism, narcissism, and dishonesty. @@Worldofourown2024 Pros and cons, sure enough most people are warm and try to make you feel welcome regardless of the situation, and in terms of family we are very close to each other, with regular reunions to keep in touch. In the workplace you can also have a lot of camaraderie that makes it easier to fit in. In this sense the scope in personal relationships is a boon and allows for easier bonding. There's another side to the coin however, since this focus on personal relationships tends to provoke unethical behaviour when it comes to labour, politics and general chain of command. And sadly many times the person chosen for a job or a position is usually not the most quallified, with the higher ups basing their choice on personal opinion rather than actual curriculum (you just have to look at our national association of teachers, where positions are essentially dynastical, inherited from father to son). Law enforcement and burocracy is another area where favoritism prevails, with some people getting special privilege in terms of getting less punishment for any given crime, or lower waiting times when asking for licenses and permits. Another downside comes from people not being honest with you out of fear of hurting your feelings or being impolite, which leaves you second guessing what are you doing wrong and how you should improve, since you don't get the adequate feedback. The same goes with criticizing other people, since they're so used to getting negative comments sugarcoated that when you speak the truth in a constructive manner they get upset. So yeah, there are always good and bad things to found in any culture, and I firmly believe when you visit another culture you'll always manage to take something from it that allows for personal improvement.

@@melchaios Right, family background determines much about what your lot in life actually is to be. We have that alot in America. It's called, 'Nepotism,' and, 'favorites.' Understand the part about people not being completely open as to try not to be rude. I used to teach in South Korea and it's a culture where relationships and the group are far more important than individualism. I was alwasy left guessing what they were trying to tell me, what they expected, and what they're intention was. Coming from the US, it was tricky at times with much passive aggressive nonsense coming my way on account of how they truly think of America and it's military imperialism. In Korea, they have gold spoon kids and dirt spoon kids. This is where gold spoons come from wealthier families who are handed a better lot in life while dirt spoon comes from lower income family who usually end up being a truck driver, taxi driver, laborer, or cook. Many Mexicans and nearby country nationals who come to the US are from poor families so they casted their net far to come work in America. Usually they're a laborer, cook, or other hourly wage job. Some own a restaurant or construction company who work hard and save money to work their way into a small business.

Gun ownership is an intricate matter. I am a legal gun owner and yes, it’s hard to buy a gun as tío Paul said. But then there’s also the side where guns are not for everyone. Guns are dangerous, and even more so in the wrong hands. Wether people want guns as a hobby or for self protection, training is a MUST. Handguns are not easy to handle, and if you own a gun and a thief goes inside your house, you better know what you’re doing because the thief’s hand will not shake, so yours should be firm as well. On a side note, in my opinion the best gun for home protection is a shotgun, and those are not as hard to get as a 380 pistol, for example. You can join a shooting club usually for a small yearly fee and that by itself will make the process a lot easier. Many clubs even have people dedicated to help members buy their stuff (guns and ammo).

I do not know if you still checking the comments on this videos since they are kind of all but if you do, number one, I want to congratulate you for the great job you did. Is a very entertaining way to show some one a places where they never been. Also I want to thank you for take you time and show the world my birth country. I would like to contribute to you well explained list of differences between Mexico and USA.Here in the states you are allow to wear an American flag in any way you are pleased, in Mexico is forbidden, actually is a federal felony; same way with the national anthem. In the United States they can play or sing the national anthem in a variety of places from a military base to a comedy show on tv, in Mexico you need as authorization and who ever singer wish to try, he better know the lyrics or could be paying a big fine. Religion is another topic, here in the States they pray at many work places and schools, in Mexico this is not allow. In the Art.24 of the Mexican Constitution said that Mexican are free to practice any religion or not religion at all but have to be at home or temples, never in public places, this was done with the finality to prevent from some politicians to use religion as tool in their politico campaigns. The Article 24 is way more extensive and I’m not an expert but is just putting part of it for the context. Once again thanks and keep the good work.
