Kenmore/Whirlpool direct drive washers will last forever if they're properly maintained. I have one from the early 2000's, and it just keeps on going like the Energizer Bunny. All I've ever replaced on it are the agitator dogs for the dual action agitator.

Yes! My newer set takes 3 times longer than my old Kenmore. AND it sprays a little water then agitates mostly dry clothes while it "senses" to see what the water level should be. It ruins your clothes and twists sheets so bad it won't balance. They're awful!

You can still buy them. Speed Queen makes a Classic model with mechanical knobs and no lid lock, its the model I recommend my customers because they are also less prone to power surge failures.

My mothers washer and drier lasted 20 years and were still working when she passed away. Same with the fridge. Our Samsung died after 3 years and our Daewoo is well past the 10 year mark and still going strong. So some things , not the big names, still seem to last.

I'm an embedded software engineer by day, Computerized stuff isn't prone to these failures, seriously ask yourself - how many times has your phone died to a power surge? The processor in it is easily 10x more sensitive to them, the only reason you get those failures is due to the manufacturer being too cheap for a 0.03$ metal oxide varistor which is a recommended part in the datasheet of every switch mode controller IC I know of. Modern machines are engineered to fail, and people need to realize this and stop buying them. I personally use a 20yr old industrial machine (that is mechanical) I got for next to nothing from a laundromat that went bust.

My apartment complex uses coin machines, and one of the washers has a screw instead of the typical lock for the circuit box. This has lead to at least a few people unscrewing the box to manually trigger the latch that the coin push triggers inside of the box.

yeah that’s basically this machine with a coin box on it they actually sell this model of speed queen with a coin box lol. speed queen are the only appliance manufacturers that don’t design them to fail so you don’t have to buy parts that they stopped making so then you don’t have to buy a new machine. the speed queens are using parts with the same design as 10 20 maybe even 30 years ago and there is one big reason why they last so long. less plastic garbage built to be already at its breaking point.

That’s a quality washer. The Kenmore I have from the 90s I’m keeping for as long as I can too. But I’ve had to replace the agitator dogs, the fill valve, drive motor coupler, and that sensor in the tub that tells it when the tub is full. Mine gets tons of use throughout the week but yours from 72 is amazing.

I'm a recently retired appliance service tech of 44 years and when it comes to home size top load washers, nothing compares to Speed Queen! This video is absolutely accurate that the mechanical timer models are the most reliable. The government has mandated energy usage to a point where manufacturers use electronics because they provide tighter control of things but they are definitely not as reliable as our good old mechanical timers. Even within the Speed Queen realm.

My family went through 3 different electronically controlled, HE washers in 10 years. We had all the same issues with all of them not washing stuff good enough the first time (especially my work clothes) plus issues where they would stop working in the middle of a load while keeping the lid locked. When the last washer we had broke, it was because the circuit board had a few traces burned out from condensation build up on it. So I got fed up and intentionally looked for old washers. When I first brought home our current washer with a mechanical timer from the early 90’s, my wife gave me that look of disapproval. After 1 day of using this washer her entire attitude changed. Not only did this old washer get our clothes cleaner the first time, it also washed everything much faster. Then I showed her most every good modern commercial washer uses mechanical timers and she finally started to see things from my point of view. That was about 2 years ago and this old washer is still doing a great job.

Someone I know bought a 65 TV here in Australia died within warranty period, and fought to get it replaced. Then that replacement died again 24 months later, the same friend also had issues with washers and dryers too barley washing properly and just dying a few months after the warranty was up. Now they are banging on from every direction about being green yet landfill is full of modern appliances that are simply not fit for purpose.

Meaning a 10 year old fully digital washer is better than new. But if it breaks and you need a new one, people are very happy to switch to speed queen regardless of the drum switch, just because they work. And yes, it's not the UI drum switch, it's a BS video

Speaking of mechanical timers… I have a Bosch dishwasher from the year 1997. Base model with just a timer knob and 3 mechanical push buttons. The BEST performing dishwasher I’ve ever had. I plan on having it for many more years. Parts are readily available. I did replace the timer 3 years ago because the electrical contacts that activate the integral water heater had failed. I kept the original timer, as it contains enough spare electrical contacts and other parts to service the replacement timer in the future! When the timer failed 3 years ago I looked at new dishwashers, but I didn’t find any that I liked better than my old one. And, I was not sure if a new dishwasher would be as dependable as my old one. So I sprung for $175 for the new timer and I know I made the right decision!

Have now had 2 late model Bosch dishwashers...hate them. They don't do a good job and a regular load takes 109 minutes! How I wish I could find the ones we had in the 70's and 80's. If I can find one that's not rotted out I can rebuild it. As an old Volvo mechanic I'm disappointed in Bosch. Their electronics and fuel injection was 2nd to none.

Mom bought a new Maytag Washer / Dryer set in the mid 1980's... They lasted 20 years. When I moved out in the 90's, I got the same model set she had and paid $200. I had washer from 1996 though 2007. The repair man said the transmission was shot and said they had a newer Maytag (a 1997 model ) just like it they would take on-trade. The washer was $165. It is still running amazing today. Funny story, I bought a new-to-me home in 2022 and it came with the same old Maytag washer model my mom had. But this one is an 87'. Running it now for over 1/2 years and it's perfect. Still have my other one too and I'm not getting rid of it anytime soon lol.

Everybody should be able to buy what they want. I'm very happy with my new heat pump dryer that replaced a ductless dryer from 1999 . It is still working but I pay 40cents per kwh and the new one was 339 . The old one uses 2.8kwh per cycle while the new one uses 0.9kwh I compared identical loads with a kill a watt. So in average it'll save me 75cents per cycle. That thing will pay off itself quickly and with a 10 year warranty I don't doubt that it'll make it. You keep your old stuff if that makes you happy.

You can override the water miser function on residential washers. Each brand has their own way. Either way, fill, then mix in (not to much!) detergent b4 submerging any garments. It will wash & rinse much better. With this method, standard everyday garments only need the quick wash. You can also wait for it to fill and then add a bucket of water & your pre-mixed detergent to integrate with the wash tub water.

So I read the Wikipedia article you cited and it had an entire section about manufacturers switching to electronic systems over mechanical systems to save on costs. Also there was this: “As energy and water efficiency became regulated, they became a selling point for buyers; however, the effectiveness of rinsing was not specified, and it did not directly attract the attention of buyers. My samsung front load is awesome. Its 14 years old and still working as new. Fingers crossed. Ive probably saved enough on my water and sewer bill to buy another set compared to a top load. I used to haul my water and it took 80 gallons per load in my last frigidare top load set. I just figured it up and my old washer used $2.40 per load of water and my new one $0.60 when calculating water and sewer. Averaging probably 260 loads a year im saving $468 a year in water and the spin cycle is much better on my top load so the dryer doesn't have to work as hard saving more money. A front load is much gentler on clothing than an agitator so clothing and towels last much longer as well. If youre on septic then you might not see as good of savings but i definitely do as will most people. My sister just started hauling her water and is using parts of my old setup. If you bring your setup we can do a side by side controlled test on water consumption. Ill pay for the setup to monitor power usage and you can figure out a test to determine cleanliness and wear difference.

@benredacted8468 80 gallons per load on my old top load. It's $20 for 2000 gallons of city water and $40 for sewer on that amount of usage. I figured the 20 gallons per load on the front load, it's probably less but 1/4 the amount is enough to make the point. Double check my math if you'd like.

I put my new washer to spin only. Took it 5 minutes almost to finally ramp up to full speed . Then spin out for 5 minutes and then had to coast to a stop for another 2 minutes and had to wait for the lid latch to unlock so I could take the items out and put it in the dryer . The worst time wasting mess in the world. My old timer washer id turn the dial to spin. The machine would go right up to full speed . I would let it spin for 2 minutes turn the dial to off and throw the few items into the dryer and be done with it.

Yes because that new one was spinning much faster, which removes more water, reducing drying times, and was using a different type of drive system to get there. Its also easier on the clothes and on the motor if it gradually speeds up and slows down. Like newer appliances have some problems but y'all act like 5 minutes of your life matters that much. smh.

They supply your water and handle your waste. I was factory certified and worked for a very large company as a service technician. We could have done nothing but the cost of water and waste has been going up we want to conserve our resources, all appliances are tested and actually do save resources if you follow instructions and load your machines correctly. It's not the machine if consumers don't use them correctly. After 30yrs , overloading is the cause of 99% of issues

1990 Whirlpool direct drive washing machine best one ever made. It still works after replacing original motor, transmission, and clutch this year. Water mixing valve replaced 5 years ago. Whirlpool tech told me to keep fixing it and he said my wash basin is better than today's crap.

My old washer, which lasted over 20 years, had a manual water level knob. I could eyeball it pretty good. My new one with a special ‘water sensing’ feature just fills it up regardless of how much laundry I put in. Good work guys

We've had electronic controlled washing machines in Europe since 1977. And since about 2005. All washers are electronically controlled. Timers had their downfalls of getting stuck, jamming up, or breaking connections on the sectors. With electronic ones. It's usually the same cheap brands. But the physical buttons break. Don't forget modern washers still give you chance to override water level settings.

The very first washing machine I bought was the day of the Zeebrugge ferry disaster (memorable date 6th March). It was a front loading, store brand machine for under £80, you buy the best you can afford, this was mine. I was kitting out my newly bought flat. Good grief remember those days when a single person could afford to buy a flat in North London and still have a bleeding good social life, buy heat, a car and, eat out and have good food at home and I was only a public servant driving a London bus!!! I had that machine until mid 2010, 23 yrs (It had 6 moves over the yrs). I got rid of it in the end not because it broke down, but because it looked dreadful in my new designer kitchen, Idiot I am I should have put it in a cupboard. For all I know it’s still working to this day! My point is, as this video suggests analog/mechanical was better and it bloody well was. The machine was totally analog, with a clockwork-mechanical programmable system. It never once put a foot wrong. Clothes were spotless, wash after wash after wash. I foolishly bought a state of the art and highly rated LG clothes washer with sensor this, and digital that. It was a fantastic machine, or at least it was for the 7 yrs I had it before it had a non repairable breakdown. Sorry not quite true, it was fixable but would have cost me over £350 for parts and labour! My state of the art machine cost me £799, or £2.21 a week to have the facility to was my clothes at home. My first machine cost me 6.5pence a week to have the ability to wash clothes at home. Sadly, not everything gets better with technology. I miss the analog days some times. I’ve now got a mega Chinese brand Haier, but at least it comes with a full 10 yrs for parts and labour and fixed price repairs (really very cheap!) up to 20yrs. As I’m in my 60’s it’s gonna be my last machine!
