Jeremy Roenick has been blackballed by the Hockey Hall of Fame. But why?
Jeremy Roenick was one of the premier players of his generation and one of the greatest American stars the NHL has ever known.. After making his debut with the Chicago Blackhawks as a teenager, Roenick thrilled fans with his flashy style, take-no-prisoners approach, and jaw-dropping skills. A 9-time All Star, Roenick played 18-NHL seasons and racked up over 500 goals and 1400 penalty minutes.

Visiting Detroit from L.A. in 2005, I attended aWings/Kings game wearing my Kings Gold and Purple jersey. I had rink side seats at the blue line. I stood out like a sore thumb. During warmup, Jeremy skated over to us several times, acknowledged our loyalty, and chatted with us. He tossed us a couple pucks. I had mentioned to him that I hoped my son back in LA would see me on TV, and during the game he skated over to our seats several times so the cameras were on us. As far as fans were concerned, he was a class act in LA.

As a lifetime Chicago resident and Hawks fan, I was at the airport in Phoenix in 2005. I noticed Roenick there walking and on his phone. I shouted out "JR", he immediately put his phone down to come and greet me. Great guy, great memory. Definite HOF'r along with Steve Larmer.

Pat Verbeek, the original Little Ball of Hate, also has over 500 goals, and he will never get in either. Yet, the HOF puts in Cam Neely who has 600 points less than Vincent Damphousse who will also never get a glance with 1,200 points. Then the HOF puts in two Orange Twins from Vancouver, who hardly scored. Nonsense

One of the greatest players ever to his fans. As a kid growing up in Phoenix he was amazing. When I was 8 my family had my birthday party at the altell ice den where the coyotes used to practice. The yotes had just got done practicing and we got to take the ice. All the players left except Shane Doan and Jeremy roenick. Shane signed autographs, but Jeremy who could have just left for the day made it a point to skate around with all of us kids, make jokes and get to hang out with a pro athlete. That's something my friends and I will never forget. Absolute class act

Roenick is an absolute legend. I'm a Pens fan through and through, but he worked through so much to never get a cup and his best chance was against Lemieux. Dealt a bad hand and unfortunately probably has CTE as a result of giving it his all. He belongs in the hall of fame without a doubt, I just hope he's doing alright.

My brother and I were both playing ice hockey and he was so cool, asking us stuff -he was truly interested in talking with us the whole flight. Didn’t know his dad was a Mobil exec, my grandfather was an Amoco exec, I know how travel intensive that level of job is.

Being a kid in the Chicagoland area in the 90's was a fun time, seeing Roenick on the ice, and Jordan on the court. My nephews recently saw JR sitting in the stands at a Blackhawks game and were nervous to walk up and say hi. Roenick was so kind, took pictures with them, and signed some stuff for them. All they wanted was to say hi. He offered to do everything else extra. Also, screw Mike Milbury for trying to bust JR's balls on air when he was emotional after the 2010 Stanley Cup. That still doesn't sit well with me to this day.

I am Canadian in my 70s, so I remember when the only American in the 6 team NHL was Tommy Williams in Boston. I always enjoyed watching all of the allstar players Chicago had then like Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita and I got a thrill watching Goalie Glenn Hall and his wandering backup young goalie Denny de Jordy. Fast forward to Jeremy Roenick's playing career, he was a damn good , tough player on every team he played for and was nearly always a timely scorer. One of many Americans who have shown they belong amongst the World's best players too. He DEFINETLY should be in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Keep the damn politics out of it. Put him in!! He earned it!

In NHL '94, you chose the Black Hawks, and any time you saw that you were controlling Roenick, you never pressed the B button to switch again. You would score 15 goals a game with 10 of the being unassisted, or with the goalie getting the assist. For a whole (short) season, the goalie would be the second leading scorer on the team with like 250 points in 50 games, While Roenick had 700+ goals.

Lindros had a career that was merely good and was always judged on his natural talent and potential. He could've been great but just wasn't. Lindros was a cancer in the locker-room, he was always a major distraction (and not in a good way), way too much BS was tolerated from his parents, and yet all his PR crap (and there was A LOT) never detracted from him getting in. Roenick doesn't deserve even one-quarter of that same consideration? Roenick actually went out, gave it his all every night, and got it done but is not worthy for the HOF? 575 goals isn't good enough? That's messed-up.

Although Roenick would often destroy my Leafs' hopes, I always loved the guy. I admired his play, his clean hits, but most of all, his everyday Joe status. He spoke his mind, and would very often be right. I've only seen a few players like that in my 52 yrs of being a big hockey fan. Brett Hull and Todd Gill could be counted on to say something profound when interviewed. Before that, Tiger Williams and Bryan Spencer were also priceless. I wish Jeremy nothing but success in the future.

J.R. is the reason I became a hockey fan. I grew up in Alabama. After watching him play, I got a bunch of my friends to buy Rollerblades and we would have full blown games in the parking lot of a local park. Hockey with my friends was the only time that I was the best at anything. If not for J.R. inspiring me to play hockey, I wouldn't have found something that gave me confidence that I could be good at something and I wouldn't have some of the best memories of my childhood. So.... yeah, J.R. should be in the HOF if for no other reason than he got a scrawny kid from Alabama to fall in love with hockey.

This has to be one of the best stories I've ever heard about how someone came to love the game of hockey. I too love the game and I find it fascinating that a kid from Alabama where hockey is probably just an afterthought to most people was even able to watch hockey let alone get a bunch of friends together and start playing it albeit on Rollerblades. I have never been to Alabama but I can't imagine there being much of an opportunity to take up the game in the same way that us Canadian kids do. We practically lived and breathed hockey day after day. Probably much like Americans love their football. I grew up in a small town in the northern part of the province of British Columbia a long ways from the bright lights of any big city when playing or watching hockey was something that everyone seemed to be into. Your comment about how hockey gave you the confidence that you could be good at something is very similar to what I experienced. I was the scrawny kid who only had a few close friends and needed something to help me with my confidence and that something turned out to be hockey and the people involved with it. Like you hockey gave me some of my best memories of my childhood. I found this piece on Jeremy Roenick very interesting even though he and I are very different. It seems like JR would be someone that I would get along with just fine as he at least appears to care about the little guy even though he travels in circles of celebrity of which I know little about and would never be comfortable with all the attention those people have to endure. JR may not be popular or well liked by some people but he at least seems to care about fans and will go out of his way to show his appreciation for their support. As for being in the HOF if the Hall is for the best to have ever played in the NHL then JR deserves to be inducted. We all make mistakes and I would think that JR is probably somewhat remorseful for some of the mistakes he's made. To hold JR out of the HOF because of his personality or some of the mistakes he's made seems to be a bit unfair to me. Take care Austen.

Roenick is the sole reason I became a die hard Coyotes and hockey fan. I was 6 years old, at my first ever game at America West Arena. During pre-game warm ups I was standing on the glass in awe watching these guys fly around. Roenick saw me standing there, skated up to the glass, and gave me a puck through the camera hole after joking around with me a little bit. Made my whole night. I don't even remember the game ( I think we were playing Toronto) or the outcome, but I will never forget that little moment. As an adult, I don't really agree with all of his politics or a lot of his off-ice behavior, but for the player he was and the fan engagement he provided, he should be a dead lock for the Hall. I mean, he's no Curt fucking Schilling, that's for sure.

At first it seems like the Hockey Hall of Fame are doing the right thing by keeping Roenick out. Way too many off ice distractions were in the making of a headcase. J.R. could not even get a friend from his home country (USA) to like him. Aside from that disastrous time with the Blackhawks, he still had excellent offensive seasons. Any player who scores 50 goals twice and notched more than 500 goals, definitely belongs in the Hockey Hall of Hame.

Growing up in Chicago area and playing ice hockey in the 90s I was such a fan. My brother and I sat behind him on a United Airlines flight from Boston to Chicago in the summer of 1996. He was the nicest athlete, maybe just person I have ever met. He was genuinely interested in what we had to say, he talked with us the entire flight. I never knew until this video his dad was a Mobil executive, my grandfather was an Amoco executive and I know how travel intensive that type of job is, glad he was able to play and become a legendary Blackhawk.

Roenick got me into Hockey, the Blackhawks were terrible, and this guy came out of nowhere and made the franchise competitive again. In Roenick's prime, you always felt he would find a way to win the game for you. You didn't know how, but he would make it happen, even if he had to do it short-handed and in overtime. Criminal that he is not in the HOF…I had the pleasure to practice with him at the NJ Rockets when he played for the Bantam National Championship team as did my brother…I was on the Rockets Midget team (but helped out Bantam team) and he and I would play as forwards on the penalty kill squad vs the power play squad…lets just say we scored more a nan down than they did…he was then and in the NHL was noticeably faster than everybody else…his competitiveness and consistent high performance is top notch

Roenick should have been a first ballot Hall of Famer. His combination of scoring ability combined with his toughness makes his career very unique. He was an original 6 era type player. His stellar play for the Blackhawks his first two seasons enabled Chicago to trade Denis Savard to the Canadiens for Chris Chelios. Very informative presentation as usual.

I’m a Blackhawks fan and JR was My favorite player as a kid, I got his posters in my room and I remember playing with him, goulet, larmer, smith and chelios on nhl93. That is the reason why I wore number 27 when I was playing. What a player, he was complete and play with a lot of energy, not the biggest guy on the ice but never refuse the fight. The fact that he didn’t win the cup in 20 years of career show how it’s difficult to win the Stanley cup. As one of the best American born player, he diverses to be in the hall of fame.

Okay, here's some numbers. In his peak years, he finished 12th, 7th, 15th and 6th in points. Very good, but not really among the true elite of the league. He had three 100-point seasons at a time where 100-point seasons were still pretty common. He never won an individual award, or even finished higher than 5th in the voting for one. He never finisher higher than 4th in All-Star Team voting at centre. His team never won the Stanley Cup. None of this screams "Hall-of-Famer". So the answer as to why he's not in the Hall of Fame is most likely just "his career wasn't quite good enough."

Madano, Amonte,Oates, Jagr, I could go forever here. I agree that his numbers are borderline shoe in but everything else he did and who he was despite the negative has put way worse players in. There definitely is that human element to it, which is inherent in pretty much all selection committees like this. I didn't like Roenick in the 90s, celebrated the hit that Darien Hatcher put on him, and have really modified my opinion quite a bit since then. He had his beefs with opponents (who doesn't/didn't?), laid hits that could be called dirty sometimes, but always took it like a man when they gave it back to him. I've seen Roenick take a hit before where his jaw was broken and as he's skating off the ice, he's literally reaching into his mouth and pushing horridly loosened teeth back into place and only going out of the game after the team doctor tells him he's no longer medically cleared to play and the coach is directly ordering him to go to the hospital. (They might show this in this video, I honestly haven't watched it all yet.) 99% of us would've been a screaming fetal ball on the ice and would've been taken out by ambulance, JR walked out of there like it wasn't much of anything. That is toughness that you have to admire whether you're a fan of him or not. What I don't like is how often a Hall of Fame pick is chosen or declined based on PR reasons. I thought his comments toward the fans during strike years were pretty ugly, I think him saying that the fans are just jealous of him struck a bad chord and came back to him during HOF selection. I viewed it as whiny that in 2006 he said that the USA hockey team had blackballed him. He had significant injuries and had been in a slump the last few years, I don't see how that is the fault of USA hockey. Still, I think his performance in the late 80s and through the 90s absolutely qualifies him to be in the HOF, as well as scoring 500 goals in his career, which is the gold standard of a hockey career. I don't think it's right to hold post-career PR things against him for HOF selection. For what he did as a player, hell yes he should be in the HOF, same as Pete Rose for what he did as a player. Pete Rose is another one who just got deluged by media that loved to portray him as some Jekyll & Hyde character, the media was downright evil the way they poisoned everything about the guy. Rose gambled but every single gambling receipt that he's ever generated has been scrutinized by federal officials and media. He never threw games or point-shaved to benefit his gambling. He never even gambled on his own team (to win or lose). For whatever he did, he's paid the price 50 times over in the last 30 years and should be in the baseball HOF for what he did as a PLAYER. I look at Jeremy Roenick like that, too. Hall of Fame selection committees are WAY too PR-driven and tend to only look at the negative.

After so many concussions USA Hockey knows how this effected his brain, his angry outbursts and tell it like he sees it. Jeremy Roenick the by product of what to NHL players turned into. Put that into consideration. Nobody would whole heartedly appreciate the sacrifice endured by Jeremy then Jeremy himself. Put him on the podium at HOF and see the tears fly.

In all honesty some of his numbers are incredible and should give him access to the HoF. Regular season + playoffs he had: +/- +174 104 game winning goals ! 101 times scored the first goal of the game 9 overtime goals 30 shorthanded goals 20 shorthanded assists 201 powerplay goals 268 powerplay assists 1,338 total points But hey, JR made $56,563,571 from his playing career so HoF or not the man did a damn good job.

I got a chance to meet him when I was a kid. He was at a mall out in the burbs of Chicago, (now defunct mall) signing autographs and meeting fans at the Footlocker. I was I think 10 at the time. I'll never forget being in line and the mall officially closing and being we were almost at the end of it thinking I wasn't going to be able to see JR. As a little kid that gets at you after you've been hyping it up all day. Roenick made a point that he wasn't leaving until he saw everyone who came out to see him and it was well past the mall's closure when we finally came up to the table he was at and he was all smiles. Took pictures, signed my sister's jersey, signed my hockey stick and made you feel amazing. He could've easily just called it a day and left. But he didn't. I'll never forget that smile and that point to make the fan experience the best. I hope he gets to see his induction into the HoF but I hope he knows to the fans, he's already there and will be forever.

Players should be inducted in to the Hall of Fame based on what they did on the ice. The intensity and valour that Roenick played with should be enough to get him in. Theo Fleury is in the same boat. A lot of his comments and actions were in the heat of the moment. He was a big time clutch player. 110% in the HOF in my opinion!

I remember in first year university, I met and became friends with a fellow Leafs fan. One day in class, we decided to troll Roenick through Twitter. Nothing bad, just dumb stuff like “you suck, etc, etc” To our surprise, he actually responded and it’s not so much what he said, but how he said it, that completely changed my opinion of him. Simply put, he responded with maturity and kindness when he very easily could’ve told us to take a hike. This made me buy his book and my opinion of him completely shifted, positively.

Born and bred on the south side of Chicago. JR was the first athlete to make me realize I was never going to be a superstar athlete as I am almost 2 years older than Roenick. I enjoyed watching him and Amonte. Another Blackhawk that left to become a superstar. The Chicago Blackhawks always have been the NHL superstar farm team.

Another very well done segment! I’m kind of on the fence when it comes to whether Roenick belongs in the Hall of Fame. It’s quite possible the selection committee may have made JR an example of who they feel doesn’t embody or meet the standards of who is chosen. Locally here in Calgary former Flame Theoren Fleury could also fit into the same category. I would wholeheartedly suggest you do a future documentary on Theo. Thanks again!

No, Jeremy Roenick does not belong in the NHL Hall of Fame. Being tough, or highly skilled, is one thing. Being a decent human being is something else altogether. Character matters in hockey. While it can be defined, or understood, in a variety of ways, it always implies qualities of a person that deserve our respect and admiration, not just the power to do things. By the way he conducted himself during his career, both on and off the ice, it should be obvious that Roenick didn’t display those qualities when it mattered the most.

As a die hard Hawks fan and I love JR, I’m also a stickler when it comes to the HOF. JR was definitely an exciting player and had some fantastic seasons but I think there has to be some real concrete years when talking about putting someone in the HOF and to the best of my knowledge and not mentioned in this very well done video, JR never won any individual hardware or cups. His 96 World Cup, Olympic silver medal and 500+ NHL goals are not enough for the HOF in my opinion but everything else he was to the game and the fans definitely put him in the conversation. He could be waiting a while if it happens and I think it’s understandable.

Agree with this...he had four elite seasons but as you mentioned, no individual or major team awards and no 1st or 2nd team all star selections. Only broke 80 points in those four seasons, too. 90/91 - 93/94

I met Jeremy Roenick at a celebrity dinner. He treated me a good as a kid. Signed everything I had. Loved the way he played in the future. I was playing triple A hockey at the time.

Rownick should definitely be in the HoF. Ty Cobb was in baseball. Both were outstanding players who seemed dirty sometimes & were not very liked but what a competitor Roenick was plus one of the very toughest guys as he had more broken facial & body bones than anyone I know of. He was awful for my Kings but I was in awe of him when he played for the Hawks. Also he had so many game-winning gials & moments. Vote him in already!

I just got back from a trip to Toronto and the HHOF. As a lifelong Blues fan - and Blackhawks hater - I despised JR due to his skill and talent for my main nemesis. I had forgotten all he had gone through. I'm glad that they have cut down on some of the more dangerous elements of the sport. Perhaps fear of concussion-related lawsuits has played a role.
