As a Red Wings fan in Michigan I can honestly say that after he left, he was extremely hated. Chicago released a news story that he would be 'safer in chicago' as in theyd clean him up and keep him out of trouble better because it was a better city than Detroit. He's the most hated a former Red Wing has ever become hated!

Really? I've never heard that. It's good to hear the perspective from a Wings fan. Thanks. I didn't know. Yeah people felt bad for JJ for a long time cause he was forced off of the team that won 2 cups. But to be fair, LA would not have won without Jeff Carter, Jeff played in 3 finals and won 2, I absolutely understand not wanting to play for a joke of a franchise. He went to the finals, signed a lifetime Philly contract expecting to compete with Giroux by his side for years, and promptly got fucked. Shoulda got a no trade clause. But clearly the hockey gods sided with Jeff cause obviously he was a major piece of their 12' and 14' era puzzle.

Here are a few players that definitely need a mention who were hated by opposing teams. Some names will go back in time because as one commentator said, there IS a modern bias. First I'll mention a few on for the team I've rooted for since childhood, the Montreal Canadiens. Mario Tremblay was well known for being hated by opponents while making his presence felt on the ice . Was also a good offensive contributor as well. I would also add John Ferguson in the 1960s. For Toronto Maple Leafs, I'd throw in a Bob Baun and Darcy Tucker. Lastly a big name was left off. He played for both Quebec Nordiques and Washington Capitals: Dale Hunter.
@henrymanzano2201

I agree with you on so many of these. Tremblay's lasting legacy will be running Patrick Roy out of Montreal,and basically ending any hopes of the Habs return to greatness (I say this as a fellow Habs fan). John Ferguson was a BADASS!

To add onto this list it shows how little research the people making this video did that they put Pronger as the most hated or dirty Flyer. Based on what it seems like their criteria was the Flyer on this list should be Dave “The Hammer” Schultz who got into so many fights and got so many penalties he actually released a song in the 70s about being in the penalty box.

The age of whoever made this shows lol. Here are some of my personal corrections: Blackhawks, Stan Mikita. Yes he was talented, but also dirty as hell. He regularly used his stick against other players and was super sneaky about it. Stars: Derian Hatcher aka Frankenhatcher, literally an unstoppable monster. Red Wings: Gordie Howe, same as Mikita. People nowadays seem to forget how dirty Gordie Howe could be. There's a reason why the Gordie Howe hat trick includes a fight. He literally provoked them! Could've said Martin Lapointe too but Howe is more of a Red Wings than him, obviously. Canadiens: Mario Tremblay. Tremblay doubled down as a coach too lol. Blues: Chris Pronger ( yeah he deserves to be on two teams lol )!

Kids nowadays have no idea. Messier was dirty as hell. I think his dirty plays were forgotten due to his winning legacy. He played with many talented players and made a lot of points. His antics stand in the shadows of that glory. When the NHL or sports networks talk about Messier they always talk about him playing with Gretzky, winning the cup, etc. but never talk about how many penalty minutes he got, and they never talk about the dirty hits contrary to Scott Stevens for example. So today's kids who never saw him play live a lie and have an unrealistic portrayal of him. It's like Gordie Howe. Howe was super dirty, but nobody talks about it nowadays.

For anybody that didn’t know. Mark Messier was a total pos in Vancouver. Wayne Maki was a player who in the 60s was involved in one of the most violent on ice incidents in the history of the NHL. He and Ted Green attacked each other with their sticks and beat on each other in the head. In 1972, he was diagnosed with brain cancer and then died in 1974 at the age of 29. He wore jersey 11. The Canucks took #11 and retired it. When Messier signed as a free agent with Vancouver, he demanded number 11 against the Maki family wishes and most of the public. He then ripped the team apart internally. Trevor Linden was captain of the team. He took the captain from him but he created divisions in the locker room. His attitude was so horrible in Vancouver. He basically got both the GM and Coach fired in not even his first full season there. He basically was Lebron before lebron. He wanted GM powers and convinced the owner to get rid of GM Pat Quinn before Quinn got a chance to fire the coach, Tom Renney. Quinn wouldn’t have put up with Messier bullshit as coach. Tom Renney was a rookie coach, fresh out coaching the Kamloops Blazers in the WHL. Messier created divisions inside the locker room. Back when the Canucks visited the Rangers for Messier return game, he had the game winning goal until a late goal allowed by goaltender Kirk McLean ruined that story for him. He complained and yelled at McLean about it. Every single player who was considered heart and soul players in the organization or leaders were traded away. Mike Keenan got hired as coach and gm. He went on a burn it down approach, trading away McLean and Linden. Mark Messier is definitely most hated in Vancouver to this day.

Looking at it objectively and having seen Barnaby for the entire time he was with Buffalo, I'd have to say he was a "Poor Man's Brad Marchand." Okay, may be not a "Poor Man's Brad Marchand", but maybe a "Very Poor Man's Brad Marchand." Uh, yeah...perhaps a "Completely Destitute and Bankrupt Brad Marchand.? Okay, here's my final offer. How do you put Chris Simon as the most hated Capital when his most egregious offenses took place when he was an Islander (the stomp and slash to the head)? Max Lapierre was a fun guy to watch in the pre 2010 chaos with Habs. I don't have the best concept of time, but I don't remember anything related to him after he got trade or something. No idea he played for the Blues and had such a poor reputation lol. I really thought he played in Europe not long after MTL but I'm probably mixing stuff up. Pretty sure Probert was feared rather than hated, and as time has gone on is somewhere between beloved and respected. If you're going for a hated Red Wing I would point out that Sean Avery actually got his start with the Red Wings and even then his fellow players thought he was an pile of refuse (an anecdote has it that he went to chirp Joe Sakic and Brett Hull sat him back down and said "YOU don't get to talk to Mr. Sakic.") As a runner up, and this might be recency bias, but Niklas Kronwall was always controversial for his hits. Even when most people acknowledged that the hits were legal, he usually had the opposing team's fans in an absolute blood boiling rage. Then there was an inevitable round two on that fury when Player Safety would review it and determine he did nothing suspension-worthy. This was especially on display when Brendan Shanahan was director of Player Safety and you had the added screams of bias in the decision-making.
@mangrove
@mangrove 3 ай бұрын
Vlady moreso than Kronner. Shanahan once said "I used to think that Vlady was borderline dirty, but now that I'm playing with him, I know that he's borderline dirty." With Avery, Hull said that the veterans liked him, but they also kept him in his place. He once walked into the locker room and said "The Big Dog is here." Someone (maybe Stevie Y) retorted "You're not a big dog, you're just a puppy." Hull signed him to Dallas, likely thinking that he could keep Avery on the straight and narrow, which didn't happen, of course.

Fleury was the biggest little man, and he was 1 of the most popular players for a while. He's been through a lot of shit in his career. The captain and heart and soul of Calgary, I loved how his C was a mini flames logo and not just a normal C shape! Proof of his popularity was how many sets featured big time insert cards of Fleury in the 90s and early 00s. And the guy retired at 34, with over 1000 points, over a PPG, scored 50 goals in a season, won the cup, multi time all star left wing, skill wise he's a 100% hall of famer. He's like Steve Larmer, where he retired very young and could have stayed and padded his stats to 1200 points and already been in the hall of fame over guys like say, Dave Andreychuk.

I can't believe Ott played over 900 NHL games. He also has over 1500 PIMs, which must rank very high among players who played exclusively post 1990s. He also had 46 points in a season where he played 64 games. That's very impressive. Not surprised he was drafted in the first round.

Ott was a super intense player. The prototype of the player everybody wants to play for their team, but never wants him to play against. He had an infinite amount of grit. He was fast, hit hard and never backed down from fights. I never saw a shift from that guy where he didn't put his entire energy into it. IMO while he did snap once in a while, I never considered him dirty, just a top tier enforcer in the good definition of the word! The vast majority of his hits were clean and textbook in their finish. He had great timing for hip checks, a lost art. I really liked that player.

@@TheFlamingPike Good take. I do disagree that he was an enforcer. He was an agitator, much like Tucker, Avery, J. Ruutu and Prust. For future lists like this I have a couple of suggestions-which you are obviously free to ignore; after all, it’s your channel and your content. Still, here me out: 1. Lay out your ground rules. It can help you out in more ways than one. For instance, a quick “we’re only talking about players who are retired. If you want me to make a list of active players who are the most hated, let me know and give me a suggestion for your team.” This sets up the video, has a Call To Action to encourage engagement, and builds in a promo for another video. 2. If you’re going to throw in a change-up (Columbus and Mr. Carter), make more of a deal about it-even maybe use it to make a CTA for another video (“If you want to see a video of the players hated most by their own fan base, let me know below, and tell me who your team’s most hated player is”). 3. Make 100% sure that you have the right images. Everyone comments here about “That’s not Tony Twist, that’s X” is someone who cared enough to post the comment. They’re potential subscribers-don’t risk losing them because of a badly chosen or poorly cropped photo. Good luck with it, bro. I’ll follow along for a bit & see how you’re growing with your videos. KZbin needs more hockey history channels! ✌️

For all the useless information about some of the players on this list that doesn't really have anything to do with being hated, I'm suprised the Paul Kariya hit wasn't mentioned for Scott Stevens. Sounds like Top 6 is a Devils fan lol the way he only focused on him not being a dirty player. Scott made a few dirty hits, he played forever, of course he did. But I agree he was overall maybe the best physical defenseman ever, along with Chris Pronger, who I also don't think is a dirty player. Other teams fans would HATE them but, yeah, they're hall of famers, legends, champions, and among the toughest men to ever skate... Also, a lot of the teams for these players are incorrect. Like Pronger should be St Louis for example clearly. Some are 50/50 like Tiger was most hated in his Vancouver days in all honesty BUT he did play 1 more season with Toronto than with the Canucks.

Bertuzzi did tarnish his legacy in the Canucks sweater, however the west coast express line had a very solid outing and he was a big part of it. The hit to Steve Moore was gutless but what was worse was no so much the sucker punch it was his head hitting the ice and bodies piling on him. People in Vancouver do have more charitable memories of Big Bert than negative but no one is going to justify the hit.that said, people in Vancouver hate Messier more. He brought in Keenan, he drove away Linden and Bure, he was so entitled and there to make money and do pills, he demanded to wear the number 11 and spat on the memory of Wayne Maki when that number was out of respect much like 37 unofficially retired by the club. Messier is supposed to exemplify leadership and yet he never took any accountability or acted like a leader whatsoever in Vancouver he was a total pig and if it weren’t for his time in the Oilers and the Rangers his legacy would be so much worse.
