Looks like back in the time, people really broke the spirit of lots of horses to make them simply function. In more modern days, where the horse is rather recognizes as a valuable partner, the methods are different ans more friendly, but the term "to break a horse in" stayed in the english world and is universal to: "Start a horse training"- whether it is making a machine or a valued partner... Anecdote: I recently read the german H.Dv. 12 (old cavalry manual before the wars, first one written in 1882, IIRC) and horses were recognized as "material", albeit as very sensitive and valuable ones. Here were made lots of provisions to get a cavalry horse to trust the rider. For example, mount/dismount had to be practised in a way that the tip of the boot must not touch the horse because it would annoy the horse. Or the statement that spurs were to be given to a rider in honor and distinction of his riding skills from his superior officer. Or, that if a problem with a horse comes up, the rider had to evaluate the problem cause INCLUDING the level of trust the horse could put into him- only after this evaluation the riders were allowed to do some punishment action on horses that would not follow commands...

How about if someone dogs their heal into your back and then jumps onto it with all of their weight. Then do not FUCKING move or complain. I can only imagine, with INTENSE sadness, what would happen if that sweet sweet girl moved . The sadness for those animals you “train” is immense. My wish is that you would experience the same training. And then those asshole kids you have abusing those sweet animals makes me want to vomit.
