Alan Revere should be forever in your debt for bringing his book to life with such clear and concise videos. I have an electronic version of the book - my purchase inspired by your other vids in the series - readable but a little dry. Keep up the good work Melissa I can't wait to have a go at this project.

What hammers did you use? Thanks for posting the sheet gauge in a reply i was going to ask as well. Hi from Sydney Australia. Really like your style of videos. It is so easy to listen to and watch. The books here in Australia are over $120 each. Kindles are about $22 each but I like books so much better than electronic, I'm 70 so very old school.

Melisa , thank for very much , this was a great tutorial , i have purchased Alans Book and he mentions getting a Checkering file but not what size, please can you advise me what size file you use on the video, i assume something like a 4 with 75 lines per inch but had you have zoomed in i am unsure if this will be too fine, any advice would be greatly appreciated as i have to order the files in from the US to the UK as we only seem to stock one size file over here which is a size 2. kind regards Dan

Is there a reason why you add the inner ring? Is it ok to make the outside dome ring on its own, or would it be uncomfortable, or something?
@MelissaMuir2 жыл бұрын
This one was for the project. But you could totally do just the outer (convex/synclastic) form or you could do just the inner (concave/anticlastic) form by them selves.

Hey Melissa, thanks for this great video! ❤️ How does it work when I want to solder the ring? Does the inside band also has to be larger? And which book of Alan are you working with? Cause I am considering to buy it myself. Thanks a lot :)
@MelissaMuir6 ай бұрын
@@viktoriaa6953 this is from the book Professional Jewelry Making. If you want to solder the ring, you would follow the same steps and then solder it. But be sure you put a small hole somewhere so it doesn’t explode.

Gret video, thank you! Is there information anywhere on how I can adjust the measurements to make different sizes? I've looked but can't find anything so far. Thank you so much!
@MelissaMuir5 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Glad you like them. As far as I know, there is not a conversion chart or anything like that. But I start with the measurements in the book and will make changes from that. For instance, The book directions are meant to make a size 7 ring, starting with 0.6mm (approx 22 ga) and 56mm. Using that information, I can use a ring blank sizing chart (check Rio Grande or Contenti) I can then make some changes larger or smaller. The outer band is 12mm larger, so that is an easier one to change. I hope that helps a little.

Great video!! Could you tell me what flat file you're using? I'm hoping it's one I can get at the local big box hardware store. Thanks.
@MelissaMuir5 жыл бұрын
LuniLadi do you mean for The texture? My flat file is finer than the one from a big box store. And the one for texturing is a specialty file that will need to be ordered in.

I’m not sure why piercing would be required to soder. Can you explain? As always, this video was fantastic! Love watching and learning from you!!
@susangeist6555 жыл бұрын
I believe it's because gasses can build up, causing the piece to explode. I'm sure Melissa can explain it better!
@stephengratton22945 жыл бұрын
I would love to see a good scientific explanation of this problem. I suspect you wouldn't get a perfect solder joint due to expanding/contracting gases. I would be more worried about the ring imploding due to water in the flux turning to steam therefore driving other gases out of the ring leading to a partial vacuum (should perfectly soldered joints be achieved) in the ring. Atmospheric pressure would crush the ring when it is quenched in cold water.
@MelissaMuir5 жыл бұрын
It is because you do not want the gasses to get trapped inside the ring. When they do the piece can explode, and it is never fun when that happens. So anytime you are making a hollow form and soldering it closed, there should be a hole somewhere to allow the gas to escape.
@larryswitzer43365 жыл бұрын
I noticed on some other videos that you use a liquid type of flux, is that just for silver or can it be used on all metals
