As a German, I find this familiar. When the NSDAP under Adolf Hitler took over, the old institutions of the Weimar Republic did not cease to exist, they just ceased to matter as people loyal to the party were promoted to all important positions, replacing those who had been fired for racial or political reasons. This process is known in German as "Gleichschaltung", which might be loosely translated to synchronisation. It soon reached the lower levels of the hierarchy. My grandfather, a mechanic, had lost his job during the depression of the early 30s. With a young family to feed, he was desperate to be hired by the Reichsbahn (national railway) as an engine driver. Hardly an important position, but for party members only. I was born in Scotland and came to the US in the early 60's with my engineer father and my mom. Insert gap here, not all bad to be sure. Another Trump term seems to upend what I thought actually made America worthy of emulation in the first place. The UK class system and Brexit are a total joke, almost nobody there is better off. In America I saw that individuals had meaningful joices through the late 1960's - 2010's or so. The US had to screw it all up by considering becoming an actual if not potential Totalitarian society. When you search the concept the images that come up are Stalin and Hitler. The US should not become a loser society, which is what happens with oppression of social, political, and economic change. I mean that is the definition of history, which can be the one to help all the planet. Pray for progress. Ahmen!
