Welcome to my new declutter project, Project Apocalips. I did a rough count and I currently own around 450-500 lip products (not including balms or lip liners) and in 2021 I am endeavouring to try all of my lip products at least once and ask myself "do I need this?". My goal is to try, review, and declutter my whole lip collection and check in with my progress every month. This is part 2 where I focused on my 41 MAC lip products in February.

Update: Good news, Chili and Russian Red were happily rehomed and will hopefully get a lot of use and love from my mum 😝 Also now that I have cooled off a bit and was able to reflect while editing, I have decided that I probably can declutter another 5-6 of these lip products, so I will do that at the end of the project when I reflect on what I have kept.

Hi Kat! I recently purchased Quite the Standout which is one of the liquid lipsticks from the Retro Matte line and you might consider that as a standin for Morange perhaps? Like you I prefer the Mattes - Quite the Standout is an orange with a red tint, it is long wearing, basically does not transfer and it wears down beautifully.

As a Greek person I can honestly tell you that Greek is really difficult for English speakers to pronounce. That’s why they say “it’s all Greek to me” whereas in Greece we say “it sounds Chinese”. It’s probably because Greek doesn’t really have an accent, at least in the cities. When you go up in some Greek villages even Greeks can’t understand what the heck they are saying 😀😀😀.

Greek mythology is a myth in itself since it was manipulated during Herodotus times, to the point of stating that Orion (who comes from Egyptian Horus not only in the name but in it's sky representation) was born because Zeus peed in the sea. 🤷 I hope with this you can understand how historic manipulation came to exist.

Yup, I too am purging my lipstick collection because of this series! A couple went off, some are not good colors on me (ugh, trends), but most are disliked formulas (have to use liner, wears off too fast, white base, wears uneven, too dry, too wet). Seriously, while I will use a liner if I am doing a look, if I have to use liner with a specific lipstick, I'm not going to wear it, especially if it is a creamy formula that's going to need reapplication several times a day. With mask season lingering on, I barely wear them as it is, and if I'm going to end up pulling a joker look than it's a hard pass.

I wonder if your collection feels bigger after 2 months of wearing a new lipstick each day? Or smaller, because you declutter and refamiliarise yourself with each lipstick? Would love a little recap of how you're finding the project setup! What's it like to wear a single brand for a month? Do you think you'll have a big purge of similar colour lipsticks when you do cross-brand comparisons?

So far I’m really liking the format and have nothing I really want to change about it. I’m only targeting brands at the start just to get a good starting off point, otherwise it’s pretty overwhelming choosing which shade to try next. I might do different months in the future, like indie makeup, high end makeup, k beauty etc. there might also be months where I just try whatever I feel... it’s just depends on what I feel like at the start of the month 😆 oh I’m not sure if I will have a large purge at the end with the swatch comparison, because I am ok with having a few of my favourite shades, I’m definitely not the type of person who needs just one nude and one red, but it might let me see some redundancy with shades that I don’t wear often and don’t need many of 😊

I really enjoyed the explanations of each item. Its a great way to see if I'd like to purchase one. I only have 24 lipsticks/glosses but I am doing a project pan starting with my oldest ones that way I can enjoy them and use them before they expire. The ones I don't enjoy I will just throw out instead of forcing myself to use them up. I prefer lip products that aren't drying, and have a deep enough color to tell I am actually wearing one. Mauves and reds are favorites of mine. Never tried a purple before, those looked interesting!

This is one of only 2 lipstick declutters that I have found truly inspiring and befitting of creating a "curated" collection. You almost have to go color v. color to do it right. Love this format and multiple swatch styles. Find I can't wait for the next!

Yayyyyy Kat videos! This is my favorite series of yours right now (well, that and project pan. And project palette. Okay I can’t pick). Sad you don’t like the Amplified formula but I’m beginning to agree. I love the color of Vegas Volt but it never wants to stick to the inner part of my lips. Unfortunately I found the Buxom lipsticks to be the same way, even in shades I didn’t think needed a white base (if that’s what was causing it). Alas, I refuse to give up my Vegas volt just yet - but I chucked the Buxom one.

YES! Why don't they stick to the inner part of the lips! I feel like its because they are a bit too slippery and just won't grip. I find that's how it wears off too, around the inner part of the lips comes off really fast and then it looks uneven. The shades are amazing but they need to reformulate them.

I am doing a similar project and it’s exciting. I have 68 bullet lipsticks and 25 liquid lipsticks and I use the tiny decisions app to decide each day which lipstick to wear. I’ve been taking notes on each lip as I go and tracking the number of times I apply. I’m really enjoying it and it’s so fun to see that you are doing something similar. Lipsticks have an expiration date around 5 years. But at the same time, if it smells good and acts fine it can last a life-time. There is tons of vintage lipsticks that were used by early movie stars that are still to this day being used!

Loved the video Kat! I appreciate how thoroughly you described the shades and compared and contrasted the colours next to each other. I am neurodiverdegnt (on the autistic spectrum) and get quickly overwhelmed and frustrated when surrounded by many colours or choices. The very vast repertoire of MAC shades are very intimidating for me and therefore I have never been able to try their formulas other than when received as gifts chosen by others. This video truly helped me and I now feel like I have some guidance and a starting point for finding ‘my perfect red’, Thank You.

Oh I'm so glad it could help! Yes their range and store in general is very overwhelming. The rough rule of thumb with their popular reds is: Deep cooler toned: Ruby Woo (very matte), Russian Red (matte, but not as dry) Bright cooler toned: MAC Red (which I don't own) Bright orange toned: Lady Danger Deep orange toned: Chili Dark vampy red: Diva Bright coral red: Mangrove Of course there are more, but I think those are the most popular shades, and I threw in Mangrove because it should be more popular haha!

I used to own Dionysus in that Liptensity formula. I bought it for my Grad ball in 2016, I wore that one a lot. I remember blotting it to get that stained look occasionally. Then I discovered liquid lipsticks and that they don't bleed or move on my lips, and have never looked back. What a throwback. I used to wear Brave everyday in the last two years of high school because Velvet Teddy pulled sort of peachy-apricot on me, which I definitely couldn't have gotten away with. I used to wear New York Apple like every weekend.

Chili was the quintessential 90's matte red/brown. I never wore it as it looked horrible on my just like velvet teddy is the color of this era, and it too looks terrible on me. I loved all the light glosses on you and I hope you wear them more. I also love the red/orange color on you. You are like the professor of red lipstick and I am here for it, even though I really don't like red on me. I feel like for me as I have gotten older, the lighter the makeup the better. St. Germain - looks SO fluorescent holy smokes, I'm in the market for a heckin' light pink but that is like bubblegum on steroids. Dionysus - looks like it would wear well for only about 3 hours, but then start to bleed over my lip line, but wow the colour is stunning on you. I wish Ruby Woo worked for me but it ends up pulling too pink on my skin tone. Even with all the variety in reds you have they all look so good on you.

With the hight possibility of sounding shallow as hell: I am so looking forward to not needing a mask anymore. I have to wear one during my job and as a ABSOLUTE lipstick fanatic it really depresses me. You can take away every eyeshadow I own but you better be careful touching my lip products because you might lose a finger or two.

I can completely relate! I think last year with our 6 month lockdown and strong mask laws, I was really losing interest in makeup because I couldn't wear a lip product. It sounds stupid, but I am like you... I love lipstick and it changes how I feel when I wear it!

I'm reminded of all the MAC lipsticks I've bought but ended up decluttering because they really didn't suit me and I just bought for the hype. I did enjoy Laundry List, an orangey lip glass from the Wash & Dry line (I was so sad that I couldn't find another lip product as close in shade) and a discontinued Cremesheen in Korean Candy. These were the best MAC orangey shades that I think looked perfect on me.

You might want to try lisa eldridge's velvet ribbon if you want that velvet, dry ruby woo look. I think r.w. is more blue toned, though. (Oops, saw that you talked about the powder kiss one while i was typing. That's great too! ) A much much cheaper option though: I had a maybelline color jolt that had the same powdery look. It think it wears down faster than the mac powder kiss, but it leaves a pleasant stain. It's also easy to reapply.

I have a Lisa Eldridge Velvet Morning, which is the orange toned red (which is what I wear more than a blue toned red) it is very nice but it's very expensive

Yeah it's crazy close to my lip colour! Which is great because it means it suits pretty much any makeup look I do!

I think there are dupes for ruby woo with the same finish and shade that apply better (now that we have a gazillion brands and formulas). It's gorgeous, yes, but I've never felt that all that fuss with the formula was worth it. I understand why it's a benchmark for red shades, though. Personally, I love Smash on you better ❤️

I agree, I have never thought it was worth the fuss, but I have a massive red collection and have never found a bullet lipstick that has the same matte finish... heaps of dupes for the shade but the finish is what makes it special.

yes Kat the aqua lipstick is beautiful, i hate to say i own only 1 mac ruby woo , and i only wear it on xmas day ! try estee lauder to find your orange !only if they smell i would throw away !or the colour changes, Kat you have full lips as i had when i was younger and too enjoyed a red , now mature , you needed to reassess my look , but thanks to charlotte Tilbury and estee lauder they both have both help me , charlotte nudes collection and estee pinks across the board , i will give up ruby woo , its too dramatic for me now ! so enthusiastic i made to comments so sorry your subjected to two ! but i adore lipsticksi just love lipsticks ! sorry ! love liz x

Try the Milani lipstick in 'sweet nectar' i think its a bang on dupe for Morange. Plus it is a matte formula.
