Here's the final instalment of our long journey to repower and restore Beast II, a beautiful old Bertram 25 from 1980. Over the previous weeks we have bought her, used her, stripped her and repowered her. Here's the final part of the story of a boat we still use today.

Great conclusion to the Beast 2 story. The fact you still own and use the boat says it all really. I am looking to future series about smaller and more affordable boats.

Cruising at 20 knots ( 23 mph, perfect for water sports ) would cost me $ 31US for one hour of operation at todays price. Diesel is 20% cheaper. Prices at my marina, varies from more , less or the same depending on location.

Outmount brackets would have suited you a lot better.......lot of corrosion possibilities on that pod. With the money you spent you should have shaved the transom with a splash well in it to accommodate your outboards. Shenanigans all round......

@ianmoone2359
@ianmoone2359 3 жыл бұрын
The only “disadvantage” of the self draining pod - from a safety aspect, is that when stopped and the pod is full there’s zero buoyancy & additionally you have the weight that previously was inside the boat, now cantilevered out on the pod out the back with zero buoyancy. So theoretically it wouldn’t be hard to swamp the engines and then possibly the vessel itself aft on in a following sea. The Hull doesn’t start to lift the outboards until a swell hits the transom, by which time in steep short sea, the outboards might be half submerged. What you’ve done is make the best of a dogs breakfast - but while good, it’s not perfect.
@gypana
@gypana 3 жыл бұрын
The idea of the pod filling with water is to eliminate the buoyancy so that the weight of the motors is taken up by the transom as if they were bolted on directly on the boat to help stabilize it ...it would be impossible to sink the boat from the weight of those engines in any sea. The water in the pod doesn't create extra weight, it just cancels the buoyancy.
@ianmoone2359
@ianmoone2359 3 жыл бұрын
@@gypana Nope the longitudinal centre of gravity is moved rear wards by the effect of cantilevering the weight of the engines rear wards onto the pod extension. The moment of upwards movement due to buoyancy doesn’t commence with a flooded pod until the swell wave reaches the transom. The outboards are back there on the non buoyant pod buried in the swell before the transom rises to lift the engines. Flooding the pod works at rest to stabilise the boat by making it sit on its lines. It also works under power because the pod drains and regains its buoyancy. If for example the engines both stopped working and you were transom on to swell waves - those pods when flooded could become an issue. If it were me, I would like the ability to plug those two drainage holes and a couple bilge pumps to drain the pod in any dire situation as “backup plan B”. For example it’s hard to lift the cowlings and work on those outboards at sea if they are half getting swamped with each swell. That’s a situation where you might want the extra buoyancy of the pod being drained while the cowls are off and work being undertaken to get underway again. How it works now is good for stability at rest & under power. But not all boating always works out like that. Most boats that get swamped is by the stern.

For those thinking about Podding and adding OB's to a 25 Bertram, don't do it ! just a bad phase in boating where marketing and salesman trump common sense.and experience. A pair of Mercruiser V8's would have been a far better option, more power, more importantly more TORQUE, to keep the heavy V Hull moving in rough seas.
@handyallaround5776

to increase stability of the boat you need to remount the motor much wider apart, and fuel tank just past mid ship a little closer to transom, and you killed the whole appeal of putting outboards on it by leaving the engine box to clutter up what could have been a huge cockpit,,,very , very poor job in this restoration in terms of decisions, layout, engineering, but you did excell in very nice craftmanship and finish

Seems if it was towed with a dry fuel tank and dry water tank with maybe 150hp twins (instead of the 200hp) it might be lighter than 3100kg (maximum weight for my Triton). Perhaps put the oven on clips so it can be removed and placed into the ute tray might help to bring it down. How much fuel is in the full tank? What is the tank capacity? (asking as I am currently considering purchasing one).
@hooklinesinkertv
@hooklinesinkertv 2 жыл бұрын
I think it has 450l of fuel. Never actually weighed it after the repower. It would go ok with twin 150’s but I’m not sure that’s saving much weight? This boat has very heavy trailer also. You could get a new trailer and save some weight when towing.

So you were saying (1:06) that when it was sealed, it was sketchy to drive from the added buoyancy. So you cut hole, But when it drains once you get on the plane, aren’t you back to the same tender ride? How would it feel different from when you were driving from the fly bridge previously?

@@thegodemperorofmankind7yea704 yeah, I’m gonna say that’s just an editing slip up. You can see that there’s a huge improvement in stability when she’s not motoring. That’s what they were getting at. That’s the issue they were trying to fix. All the other stuff is beside the point.

If you look at the earlier video with the pod buoyant, you can see that the hull was floating with the chines ABOVE the waterline. So the pod provided buoyancy in a narrow area, which lifted the chines out of the water. Buoyancy across a narrow area provides less stability against tipping than buoyancy across a wide area, think canoe vs. a canoe with outrigger floats. Drilling the holes in the pod just took away the narrow area buoyancy in the pod, which let the main hull sit back deeper in the water with the chines submerged. The wider area of buoyancy fixed the tippiness problem.
