It's been a long, bumpy road with many setbacks, but our ultra low budget 4 Door Dodge Coronet Street Racer has finally evolved into the car we envisioned when we started this project four years ago.
Here is a rundown of her history and intended goals, along with the background story of our grudge race last week against Casper from @unitymotorsportsgarage.
We go over the time slip from that run, review all the circumstances and parts that went into it, and announce the cars new direction and hopefully piss off a few people in the process.

I like your comment that is supposed to be fun and that's absolutely true. My opinion is all these trolls are internet junkies and probably don't have any real-life experience and if they actually do have a race car they probably don't understand the fact that you can actually make at leif spring car work without caltracs or a pinion snubber. We all have our ways of doing things .

Tony, don't worry about the immature 30 year old adolescents who feel they have to prove their manhood by challenging everyone and everything to a "grudge race". I'm 73 and I learned this years ago. The only one you have to impress is YOU, and you're doing exactly the right thing by calling these idiots out. Keep up the great work and content. I look forward to your vids every day and you don't disappoint. I've picked up a lot of useful info from you over the past few years and thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge. There's a tendancy in North America (I'm Canadian) to discount the more economy V8s. On paper there's nothing wrong with the 318 but it's not a 340 or a big block so, to many people, there's no point building one.
@todddenio3200
@todddenio3200 Жыл бұрын
Here in the States, the 318 has always been viewed as nothing more than an economy engine intended either for Grandma to go to the supermarket on Wednesdays and to church on Sundays, or for fleet/work vehicles that are always on the go which means that fuel economy, long term reliability, and having just enough power to build up enough speed to safely enter freeways and maintain the speed limits are all that matters. Very few people here in the states realize the potential these engines have... Even the 273 is more recognized as a potential performance engine than the 318 is.
@saxongreen78
@saxongreen78 Жыл бұрын
Way more 318s over there...therefore cheaper. The 318 is everything you'd ever need for our A Bodies...360 was too much for the chassis!
@kramnull8962
@kramnull8962 Жыл бұрын
The story with the 318 is the same as with the 302 Mustang and definitely 2 bbl. SBC Chevy's and ALL of the inline 6 cars of the 60's and early 70's. People simply sneered and stated that's a 318 car, not worth a crap and the entire car engine trans and all went to the crushing yard. Same for Mustangs and Chevy. Imagine how many 289-302 Mercury Cougars that were just sent to the crusher, which was almost all of the Cougars produced. Heck even 360- 390 2bbl. were sneered upon in trucks. A 390 2bbl. was a definitely 300,000 mile engine with some care applied. They had plenty of pulling power to not have a need to go above 4000RPM to pull anything anywhere. There was so much of a push back in the 80's to make everything MINT. So if you didn't have anything RARE in the MINT arena there was nothing to be had. Value to the floor with that car. The Shelby GT500, California Specials, Boss, Cobra Jet, Yenko, Hemi, or PACK cars; and other rarities has ALWAYS been the top tier, and anything less was trash. That's been the mentality since the 60's.... There was even a great lull between 351C even being anything but a hunk of metal here in the states. That's why they are no longer around. NASCAR raped most of the heads in the early 80's from the face of the planet.
@drippinglass
@drippinglass Жыл бұрын
The 318 was never a performance engine from the factory. It didn’t even get a 4 bbl. til 1981 when it became the only V8 option in the passenger cars. They did put true dual exhaust on the ‘73-‘74 road runner standard 318 2bbl.

Usually the ones that are telling you how to do it, never have any videos showing you how to do it LOL. I think the car is awesome, I've always liked old four doors and wagons. And let me add, this is true hot rodding... There was no Summit or Jegs catalogs when the boys got back from the War. They used leftover junk, undesirable Surplus parts and built everything out of whatever was readily available. Sure it has evolved over the generations, but doing stuff like this is where it got its start. Don't get me wrong, these new builds and Technology of today is freaking incredible, but what you did is a dying art form

Never has so much drama surrounded a 12 flat (1/4 mile) run - good job Tony! My suggestion for the next improvement is to install a rear anti-roll bar (not sway bar or different pressure in the right air shock). 2,900 lbs. is admirable. I have little doubt that you can drop several tenths in the 1/8 (middle lower11's 1/4 mile). 10's in the 1/4 mile (~ 6.8x's 1/8th mile) is going to take some work in my opinion - but it will make me smile if you get it there. Good luck UT!

The race was a lot of fun and I about fell out of my chair when you left Andy at the line. Your rant reminded me of a kid that always wanted to race me when I had my Jeep CJ-7. It had a stock 258, Ford truck transmission, and 3.73 gears. It was built to off road and be a daily driver. The kid had a big Chevy truck he thought was the shit. He wanted to race and I told him I’d race him but I got to pick the quarter mile. There was no way he was going to get his pretty truck dirty or risk hitting a tree so we never did race. In Oklahoma during the late sixties, we did grudge racing on the backroads. The farmers were excellent mechanics and knew how to build engines. The fastest guy was a fellow named Dutton who had a Chevy II. I think he was from Cyril or Cement. As I recall, his car had a 327 with a tunnel ram and had narrow slicks. Nobody could beat him. The key was his car was lightweight and had those slicks on the rear.

Well done Tony I'm very impressed with the build of this car. It's guys like you that pisses off the big aftermarket parts companies that try to shove parts down a guys throat saying you can't hang with the big boys unless you spend money. This is the proof that you don't have to use your wallet to go fast. It's all about thinking, planning and using what you got and what you can afford. I used to run street stock circle track cars and I quit due to the fact that I always had a bullseye painted on my back when I hit the track. Cause my car could hang with the big budget boys but all I had was a junkyard built car. I even ran tires used Hoosier tires that guys would leave in the junk pile at the track. Keep up the great work and look forward to seeing what's in store for bottle rocket.

I’ve Been around since before the shop, back when you guys were in your driveway /yard or at the storage units, and well before lam-chop and bottle rocket. It’s been a wild ride since then and bottle rocket has come a LONG way. I will say I dug the 4 speed in the 4 door but I understand it needed a torqueflite to really be fast and not so violent like it was with the 833. We are lucky to have had years of UTG to entertain and educate us and hope for many more years to come.

It was obvious that you and Andy were having FUN! I’d love to put my piece of junk back together with you and Andy and learn while having a really good time. Bottle Rocket is the same type of car the old guys built in the shops I worked in when I was first starting out. Leftovers, pieces parts from everything, mostly from the scrap pile. Make more with less or even nothing, the roots of hot rodding. Enjoying watching the projects.

Made a believer out of me ,the car was fast ,also you aren't the only man that I seen turn pistons around for power but the first I seen to tell it! You know your stuff.Can't judge a car by it's looks . I know a man that took an old ford 63 galaxie and made a lot of folks mad back in the day with a junk yard 352 and it would lift that same tire and third gear was the magic gear on that car!

71-74 satellite and road runners are the same (2dr) car...satellites are EXACTLY the same as the road runners....the snobs like to tell stories about magic components that really did nothing and 50hp stickers and badges....but theyre the same enough that $50 and a welder means theyre the same.. mopar (honest all the big 3) had no rules and no honest documentation at the time...thousands of cars went to dealer owners and execs not matching the build sheets...maybe 10's of thousands of cars. especially if what we got at ford dealers (even in canada) in the late 90s was any hint

UTG AND Bottle Rocket are destined to become LEGEND. YOUR stock, not to mention the 318's, is UP THRU THE ROOF! NEVER have have I felt more vindicated, after 50 years of touting the power of the STOCK 318 with basic mods than what you did at the track, and in this video! EVERYTHING YOU DID, IS AS I have done, the Autolites, the suspension, SAME cheap Chinese roller rockers, big yellow accel coil (for almost 40 years!), SAME heads, etc.- ULTIMATE JUNK IS MOPAR GOLD! NOW TIME FOR THE NEXT LEVEL- SHOW 'EM ALL TONY!!! Common sense, on your terms, but be careful- you the MAN. BEAUTIFUL BOTTLE ROCKET 318 WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN. I dig alot of cars, but you touched many peoples hearts, young and old, with that big, old Dodge and her humble, but mighty 318!!! God bless you.

Love that car. Love this channel. Tony is the real thing, all these experts in the comments that don't understand everything they think they know will never get it. You can build some badass cars for lunchmoney that do what you want without following the recipe the people who want your money tell you you have to follow. There are very few INTERESTING 10sec cars out there anymore, but Bottle Rocket is a post grad course in how to be fast without just spending your way there. Wanna' build a 9sec car for a fraction of the guy in the next lane? Follow this approach. An 8sec car for less? Start thinking this way. If you can only buy a faster ride that's fine too, but your car will never be as hardass as Bottle Rocket

Car worked great as far as I'm concerned! Do me a favor, go get that mop guy at the track and shoot a how to video with him, only with a shop broom. Looks like he'd know how to sweep. Got a couple guys at work that apparently have no idea what a broom is for. However they are on their phones a lot, maybe they'd see the video and learn something. It'd help if you used the theme song from a cartoon.

I always enjoyed street racing back in the day, someone would pull up alongside at a red light and give you a nod and when the light changed away you went, sadly some people would get all bent out of shape if you kicked their ass. Was a lot of fun and most people were running stock or near stock cars, so the cost back then was minimal. I miss those days.
