Here it is our Honest Review of Project Cars 2 !
No fancy editing or music in this video, just 30 minutes of a crazy Sim-Racing British guy trying to cover all the questions and the most pertinent aspects of PC2 that I keep getting asked about in all our live stream and preview videos !
Simply put Project cars 2 is a "land mark" simulator with that in mind though it in no way "DESTROYS" other simulators on the market more its just another epic driving simulation to add to the collection of simulators !
The best things about project cars 2 is how versatile it is along with its usability (especially when you consider how complex it is)
, how well it works in VR and the shear quantity of content.
The worse thing about Project Cars 2 is that its AI is really erratic and the "single player campaign" is rather underwhelming. With the game also suffering from the same problems other simulators do in that sometimes you have to dig to really find those golden nuggets.
I'd say If you like GPL , Assetto Corsa, iRacing , Race Room Racing Experience , AMS, Rfactor 2, Richard Burns Rally , Dirt Rally ,Live for speed , Mario kart 8. There is a very high probability that at least something in Project Cars 2 will give you a small smile. A smile which you will then hide so that you can complain on forums about tire models again.

Does anyone know of any youtuber that actually has driven real cars too? I watch GM and JB but none of them actually have a IRL point of reference. Many simracers have their opinions about the FFB and stuff in all of these games but only have the games themselves as reference points, while the developers usually work along real life drivers, it just seems weird to me that they'd release something that isn't approved by the real world drivers they work with.
@GamerMuscleVideos
@GamerMuscleVideos 7 жыл бұрын
Real world drivers argue about things as much as sim racers , if its any consolation my views of how sim cars should handle is more on the forgiving side in line with the general philosophy of prity much any real world driver I have spoken with and for the most part in line with how Kunos and SMS believe cars should handle.

I've only raced low power open wheelers, but the split between sim and real is so wide that its almost impossible to compare them (to me). Graphics are tremendously important in that if the visuals don't make you believe you are there, there is no simulating anything. In a real race car, there are so many other points of contact with the car in motion that you get so much more feeling than a steering wheel can convey. Sim devs have a harder job in trying to translate everything through the wheel. If, through FFB, I can drive the car faster because of what I feel in the wheel, then its good FFB. In an aside, when I race my own car, I would register it as "Sponsored" by PCars fake companies. So I would be racing for the Montgolfier Watches/Zipanol team... :)
@SureGamer1
@SureGamer1 7 жыл бұрын
Well simply because they release so many cars. They might not get the complete set of data and telemetry for all the cars. Which is why a game like iRacing might not have certain cars that you'd expect them to have or if it's in the works it takes a really really long time. I don't know what happens behind closed doors but with the volume of cars that some of these games push out all of them can't exactly be exactly the same to the irl version. I'm just speculating though.

tl;dw, it's a big step forward since PC1. When dialed in right, it can be as good as other sims but will require a lot of tweaking in in order to get there. Great graphics and decent sounds. Great VR support, potentially great multiplayer (only P2P though). Great FFB and decent AI when tweaked to your needs. It will only get better with updates :) Great video as always James, we'll have to play some multiplayer soon :D

I pre-ordered yesterday, I don't normally pre-order but 17% off and as I have PC1 (disappointed overall with that), I was watching your vids and what sealed it was the ease of multiplayer set-up and the fun you both at times were having, but also the differences in what you liked. I considered myself in the equation and any sim I have some cars/tracks I have to work at then enjoy, some I enjoy straight away. There is enough quality in what I've seen, from you and others to buy in my opinion, I welcome a more authentic experience and hope manufacturers who's cars are being represented , demand better quality detail in any future software, not to be Elitist but say hey, motor sport is bloody good fun, don't need nitro packs, green tyre smoke etc, just good quality. Thank you GM I needed you being natural with the game , laughing and enjoying aspects (especially weather) to push me over the previous uneasy feeling SMS and PC1 left with me.

24:30 -> This issue about IA is super common in racing sim. For instance on RF2, 2 days ago I was doing Flat6 Cup races (amazing mod to use *_*) against IA, qualified 5th with a good 1.5s faster, then skipped the last 10min remaining...woaaa surprised I'm now 20th !

I agree with you. Something to consider is the live track 3.0 feature. As the track rubbers in, it gets progressively faster. A good strategy is to time your best qualifying effort as close to the end of the session as possible.

I really agree with everything being said here. my experience with those cars that don't feel quite right have turned into opportunities to learn how to tune the cars properly. I wasn't really particularly good with tuning cars in sims prior to PC2 but it's forced me to practice tuning and I've found that adjusting the tuning is very meaningful to the cars in PC2 and a small adjustment can bring a considerable change of how the car feels and reacts, so maybe give that a shot for some of those cars if you haven't yet. Even if you just start with removing extra fuel can be a big difference. But being able to adjust the camber/toe angles ride height and suspension firmness make huge differences if you need the car to tighten or loosen up. Even the transmission tuning is quite easy to do in PC2 so I ended up getting used to it fairly quickly and can squeeze out more acceleration or top speed if needed.

Couple of points..MP, there is a dedicated server available if you want to use it (ideal for leagues, etc, PC only)... normally you would be going P2P if you just throw up a room to play in. FFB, with immersive and informative, they are adaptive, so should give a better balance across more cars (RAW is up to you to set levels, so may be more prone to having some cars feeling weaker than others) - there is also the option for a completely custom setup (and I'm sure the usual suspects will create options for those)

I don't know if any one else is having this problem but when i started career mode the cars were undrivable, spinning out constantly. The reason was the tyres were set to (automatic by weather) which i thought would mean it would automatically use slicks when the track is dry and wets when it starts raining. That does not seem to be the case as it was running all terrain tyres in the dry, giving the car no grip, so now i manually select what tyres to use

Project Cars 2 is excellent. So is Assetto Corsa. I think AC better represents the true feeling of the car on track but only slightly. PC2 offers much more options regarding cars, tracks, dynamic weather and time of day, etc. Both are great...if I could only have one I’d probably pick PC2, but if you asked me last week or maybe next, I might say AC. Anyway I realize a comparison between the two wasn’t the intention of your video, but it seems you can’t discuss one without the other. Good review, thanks for posting the video!

Nice review man, Same as you I was hoping there was more of a campaign as its the only thing that stopped me returning games like AC that and the odd physics on occasion. I downloaded the Forza 7 demo and in all honesty it surprised me, Its no AC or PC2 but still it surprised me. It took a bit of stuffing around with the wheel settings but once I had it sorted it was quite good, the Porsche handled well but traction control kind of feels like more of a crash saver for gamepad users. Turn TC off set it to sim and it's close to a sim experience, nothing ground breaking but a hell of a lot better than Forza 6.
@adamrandell7946

It did take me ages to sort out, If you add a custom wheel it has a whole lot of functions that aren't in the pre-set load outs. I did have to turn up the under/oversteer FFB pretty much all the way, I didn't have any problems with the self centring the only time it didn't was when the car wasn't moving which is normal of coarse. Its a bummer it's not working right for you, Its one of those games that has proper career progression which a lot of games at the moment seem to be missing or just "tacked" on, Try adding a custom wheel and have another go it's worth it if you can get it. PC2 is good I'm enjoying it so far, I can see how in the long run I'm going to have the same issue as AC but its fun while it lasts. I may even try getting into online racing, It's not usually my thing but I guess I should start somewhere and get my money's worth lol. Have a good day buddy.

It's funny that you say the AI isn't as good as that which is found in Assetto Corsa. It wasn't until just recently that AC updated their AI; previously they had the worst AI of all the racing games that had AI. Now, AC has some of the best, I'll admit, but as long as they're better in PC2 than they were in PC1, I'll be happy.

My thoughts from reddit tl;dr - different to AC (seems easier on the limit and wrt to corner exit), no real life experience, so not sure which is more accurate. online looks great/easy to set up. some graphical glitches. will not be refunding. Review score 8 AC's/10 on the official AC comparison rating system. background - mostly play AC, bought into EA PCARS1, never bought the game. So most of this is related to my experience in AC. Only driven Caterham 630R. Porsche 911 GT3 RS, and some mclaren GT3 thing I think in an online lobby. Tracks - donnington, spa and monza and a lap of Bathurst in the rain. Setup - Thrustmaster TX/T3PA Pro/Oculus Rift/GTX1070/3950K In no particular order (sorry) 1. FFB Feels great. I just turned most of it up to 75% on my TM TX. 2. Cars feel a bit too planted.. eg 2016 porsche 911 GT3 RS at Monza, line up ascari and put your foot down, and you're through. In AC you have to feather the throttle to avoid spinning out mid section. This is with TC off (all assists off). Now, having never driven a GT3 RS at Monza, I've no idea which is more accurate. eg2: some McLaren GT3 at bathurst in the rain, TC off, way too much traction coming out of corners. once again, same as above, never driven any form of race car at Bathurst in the rain, so not sure what is accurate. 3. Render distance is bad. 4. Shadows popping in and out. 5. Lots of render glitches, with screen flashing white maybe 1 or two times per lap. 6. Fantastic interface for VR - such a nice change from AC 7. Rain effects look great. Generally the whole game looks great from the limited time I've had in it. 8. Spa curbs feel flat. look flat. will have to check some real life video footage to see what they are like IRL. you can ride most of them with no consequence whatsoever. Especially through Eau Rouge Raidillon vs AC version. 9. Online is so easy to do. Just wish it had text chat, unless I missed it somewhere. 10. Arm animation still goes nuts at full lock.

Default Informative settings work fine for a T300 (my case), raw is also fine. No need to change anything, it simply feels great. I wasn't happy with PCars1 dye to all the FFB options. Took forever to get it to feel right. I also game on console and it had a game breaking bug. Good to know this might be worth getting. Racing in Knockhill. Shame console MP will be quite quiet.

For the difficulty on pc2, imo is pretty consistent. I've played with the difficulty set to 100 in the gt4 class and Renault rs01 and i always find them as fast as the previous race. I didn't experienced the skipping session bug (when they're super fast), and in my case it is the complete opposite. If i skip the session they won't be as fast as if i wait the end of it

Thanks for the review and all your coverage on PC2! My biggest issue with AC is how much more of a pain it was to use in VR than Project Cars. With PC and PC2, VR just works and I never need to take off my Vive. It's been a long time since I've tried AC in VR, so I have no idea if that experience has improved or not. I'm somewhere in between casual and hardcore, so everything doesn't need to be perfect for me. That being said, I do prefer PC2 over the original; everything just feels better. I can't wait to jump back in after release.

People just need to stop trying to compare it to Gran Turismo or Forza..I see it as a totally different game...it's not the same and it doesn't want to be the same as the other 2...but it also provides me with another great racing game to kind of try and play for myself to see if I really do enjoy it as much as Gran Turismo. I don't care if it is a true sim or not or whatever. For me, I don't want a true SIM...I don't want to have to sit there and make adjustments all the time to Tire Pressure, Shock Height, Gear Ratios, blah blah blah just to be able to make a car drive...I want a racing game that I can jump into with out the hassles of driving classes or trials too cause, I already know how to race...I don't need stupid lessons before I can get into racing. Also, since GT Sport is mainly Online and they did away with the Offline Career Mode and Cash options, I'm going to need another racing game just like GT for me cause I want a in depth Career Mode and I don't race or play games Online cause of the Online Environments...and I don't have a XBox 360 or Xbox One (Although I am looking at getting a used one) for Forza right now...I'm up for trying a different game and I'm glad it's a bit of a look and feel of a GT game and I can probably replace it with this. For me, I have always played Gran Turismo games so this is a welcomed change cause of the way the Career Mode is set up and it's just a totally different game all together. I have it pre-ordered and will be getting it tomorrow and then make a opinion on whether I like it or not for ME cause that's what matters most...Is if I like it not by someone else saying this or that about it.

I traded Project Cars 2 back in...not cause I didn't like it but I was going to be playing Forza 5, 6, and 7 more after I received my XBox One S anyways as I was also not going to buy GT Sport and play that...but it had A LOT of bugs and glitches but visually with graphics it was and is stunning...better looking than Forza with rain effects and color...but still was lacking the GT feel that Forza gives me now. I couldn't drive on Ice/Snow (Whcih was one of my 1st challenges to get the Manufacturer Alliance for Audi I think) to save my life and hated the Rally part of the game so I knew I wasn't going to progress there anyways...At least in Forza I get to change my car colors, add and make decals...so it's a lot more fun and challenging...I'll pick up Project Cars 2 again later on like maybe next year when the price is down as I still have my save file on the PS4 :P I felt Project Cars 2 was more of a jump in and drive/create a race/simulation kind of game...I wasn't much into Create A Race stuff...but did want a in depth Career Mode and challenge so I went with something else...

I agree. F1 and the Super high end cars have so much torque they can spin easily at low speeds before aero kicks in. But the fast 'normal' cars the back ends won't slide out at low speeds like in PC2. Theres some corners I cannot get around even at 60mph, in certain cars. That is unrealistic. If this was true Trackdays would see hundreds of people crashing each year.. which does not happen.

You hit the nail on the head with this review. You know the stuff they did not get right is really frusterating., Because the game is so good you want those issues to be resolved even more. For me especially the rear end slipping out on the FFB. My WHeels just dont communicate overstear as clear as other driving sims. When you oversteer and start to lose the rear end the wheel tightness should just completely go limp or quickly ramp down. Thats how you know to countersteer quickly. This effect in PC2 is vague and like you said real bad with Racecars which irl would have the tightest steering.

Guys is the VR camera inside the cockpit "locked" to the cars? I mean if I lean foward to try to look up close the dashboard the car just moves together with my head, same thing to the sides. In AC if I stand up I can see my car from the outside and I can move my head freely inside the cars. Here I just can't find any setting to fix this please clarify.

Nice review, GM - I think it's quite fair. The AI has taken huge steps forward compared to PC1, and you can actually enjoy racing it, but it can be somewhat inadequate on the lower grip cars. I find it interesting that you find the low grip cars more convincing than the high performance race cars. I am looking forward to hearing which cars get the big old plus and which get the thumb down from you in your later video. I expect your gripe is with the prototypes, FA, that sort of stuff? I don't expect you have a bone to pick with the GT3/GTE class and anything below or at that level? As for sounds, I'm wondering which cars you feel sound "atrocious". I think it's a bit harsh to call anything atrocious in most circumstances, but yeah... would be nice to hear which specifically don't come across convincingly in the sound department as well. The skip-to-end bug is something that's inherent to the engine, which is derived from ISI. It's a bug that's been there for over a decade across a multitude of games. Not sure why they even give you the option to skip to end, when it is clearly broken. Imo they should just take that option away. What I have found you _can_ do to circumvent this problem, is to just speed up time progression as you're sat there, waiting for things to end. Scale it from Real time to something much more aggressive and the AI will actually still keep churning laps as it would, just on hyper speed, producing realistic and predictable results instead of the alien times that come with skipping. You mentioned misshifts in certain cars. Might these be older H-gated cars? These have different tolerances for how tight you must be with your shifting. If these are the ones bothering you, try holding down the clutch pedal a bit longer while you shift, and if shifting down, make sure to rev-match properly. As for car revs not matching expectations on down shifts, please let me know which ones bother you and I can try and check up on it with the devs on WMD =)

Yes Rfactor I racing etc. are more accurate sims but having in mind the difference between PC 1 and PC 2 and how much improvement there is I think (and hope) with the next issue SMS will take things to a whole new level and perfectly polish the game. I know most people say there won`t be a 3rd game but if enough people play the game and the online championships get more popular and serious they will deffinetly make a 3rd one where the physics will be spot on. They already have prooved themselves with making the best tire model out there and Im not just repeating what everyone is saying I just think its so well done that everyone can feel it when driving especially when you have experience with sims and you can compare it to other games. Also if another game comes out I feel really excited to see how it would look. I never judged a game based on its graphics ESPECIALLY sims but at the same time I always thoroughly enjoy and appreciate when the visuals are good. Not only its an eye candy and is a great pleasure to play a game with good graphics but I also think it can greatly increase immersion when it comes down to sims which for me - and most sim racing fans is of top priority. Sorry for the rambling but I just felt like giving my opinion on the matter.

Question about VR: in PC1 if you turn around to look at the back seat or rear wheels there was usually an untextured mess. The wheels weren't even round etc. Do things look better when peeking behind the normal field of view in PC2? Also do the mirrors work properly in VR now or are they still a static picture in picture?

GamerMuscleVideos oh with a gamepad Forza is amazing, but something about FMS specifically felt off, although I didn't see the same editing options as the XB1, so maybe that'll change in the final product. Again, hope the game proves me dead wrong. The biggest problem to me with Forza this year can be best summed up in their repeated interviews of how you can even play it with the guitar hero guitar, as it shows they're aggressive pursuit of the casual gamer. Other deva just made their games and said "if you like it, buy it!" I don't have a PS4 either, but GTS is the system seller, and you lucky bastards have a GTS PS4 edition coming out in Europe 😡 Edit: almost forgot, how do you add the wheel and brake app in the bottom left corner in PC2?

Would've been amazing if SMS got the chance to put the official F1 2018 and onwards seasons into their base PCars2 game as dlcs, SMS got a solid foundation and things work out much much better than on Codemasters behalf, also i guess many people would simply switch over to PCars2 if that actually happened as it's he far superiro racing game in almost all aspects compared to Codies F1 iterations. Sadly it seems as Codemasters renewed their "exclusive" F1 licence once again according to Ian Bell in his recent livestream, such a shame as some healthy competition is surely needed to bring F1 back to glory in the gaming industry....
