For the second example-should you just reduce A or F by 1 week (as it says maximum of 2 weeks can be applied-not that you have to reduce by 2 weeks)? If a 1 week reduction is applied, the critical path time will still be 14 weeks, with an overall reduction of 1 week. Would this be correct?

Yes that's correct. We test with the full available reduction and then decide what reduction is actually needed based on the impact. In this example, reducing any by their max only achieves an overall reduction of 1 week, so you can reduce either A or F by 1 week only to get the best new minimum completion time of 14 weeks. If there was another layer (ie different costs for reducing A vs F) then you might end up with one option being better than the other.
