This was such a good book. Anyone who has any interest in it should go ahead and read it. I thought the ending was perfect and the surprise of how Grace ended up being on the ship changed my feelings about two of the main characters. Spectacular book.

At first I was irritated with the book it was too much like the Martian for me but I waited awhile and reread it and I enjoyed it a lot more. BIG Spoiler... I REALLY loved that he was a 'coward' too many of these sci fi books deal with heros it was nice to see something different. I hope he writes PHM The Returne he sure left a lot open. Really I hope he writes anything else.

*Spoilers* . . . . . Yes, I thought that was an excellent reveal. That twist along with the relationship with Rocky were a couple of aspects that elevated PHM above The Martian, which I also love.

*🎶 jazz hands! This one was a win for me. While The Martian was good, I much preferred this one - it was fantastic!

KIND OF SPOILER ALERT!!!! a Just finished this book. WOW what an amazing story. I read this during a reading slump, so it took a little longer that usual. I really like Stratt. I loved the court software and print trial. I am into collecting boxed software and old hardware. I loved how she owned that court room. I think it did drag on a little while they were looking for a solution to the problem. I was on the last chapters and was thinking how are they going to wrap this up in like 20 pages. And man could this have not ended more beautifully. I'd say this is a good book to show how teachers can make a difference in this or any world.

While PHM is similar to The Martian but I think PHM better. It was my favorite book of last year.

I feel the same way Angela! I think it shared some of the same strengths as The Martian, but some aspects hit me even harder. It will definitely be one of my favourite reads of 2022. We’ll see if it ends up being number 1!

Excellent review. For me, I found the… way he ended like the first 10 chapters to be really annoying… but once *spoilers* **spoiler** He finds Rocky I found the book to massively enjoyable. I had never read the Martian before so this was fresh for me fortunately.

Thanks so much Brendon! *Spoilers below* . . . Yes, the friendship with Rocky was really the heart of the book. I loved the line “I am happy. You no die. Let’s save planets!” I don’t think The Martian has a relationship as interesting as that, but the humor and science-action are excellent. You might not enjoy it quite as much as PHM but if you find yourself in the mood for that kind of book, I think The Martian is probably still worth reading.

Just finished it yesterday. Very enjoyable! Good review, btw, agree with what you said. I didn't really think too much about similarities with The Martian except a little at the beginning; once the story took on a whole different direction, I just forgot about Mark Watney entirely. The scope here is really much wider. The relationship between the two main characters is what makes this such a good read. Stratt was a little too bossy for my taste, though. The only thing that spoiled my reading experience was the gross misprint by Ballantine Books, where 31 pages around chapter 23 were missing from my copy, replaced by a section from the beginning of the book. I had to read the chapter summary online to find out what happened. Sheer incompetence by the publisher!

I love this book! I just finished it yesterday and oh boy! Rocky is my favorite book character ever. This is my 2nd Sci-fi book read this year, Mockingbird by Walter Tevis propelled me into exploring Sci-fi.

am I the only one who thinks that the ending was a bit anticlimactic? SPOILER... ........ I wanted to see how things played out on Earth
@WordsinTime
@WordsinTime 2 жыл бұрын
*Spoilers below* . . . . I didn’t personally feel like it was anticlimactic but I understand wanting to know more about what happened on Earth. Part of me thought we might get an epilogue from Stratt, which could have been cool, but the whole book was written from Grace’s POV so I’m not sure how much sense it would have made to introduce a new POV right at the end. At least we know that the beetles made it back to Earth and that Earth’s scientists were able to restore the energy from the Sun as measured by the Eridian scientists. I like that we know the mission was successful but that Grace stayed with Rocky because their friendship was the heart of the story.

LOL, looks like Andy is still living in the 20th century. Come on! Tape measures, pens, stop watches, test tubes. Lots of stuff can be done with mobile devices already nowadays. I'm a few pages in and that crap throws me off quite a bit. Reads like something from the 1950s when it comes to gadgets. I don't get the fascination for that book. Should I read on? I'm not so sure... Next up: Andy introduces us to the concept of horse and carriage... ;-) Even original Star Trek's Enterprise crew had better tech.
