I own a 2015 Ram 1500 hemi. Great truck. Always wondered what drive train loss there would be at the wheel, given the 395HP number is at the crank. I was a little shocked to see 90HP loss at the wheel, though. I guessed maybe half that. I'd love to do this conversion to my truck, but the trouble is finding professionals near me who actually know what they're doing to do the work properly. The 126HP gain at the wheel was impressive. I'm guessing this voids the heck out of the warranty, but I'm past mine anyway. Looking forward to seeing more about how this truck turned out, and perhaps learning how much it cost to do the job.

Add 10hp just by getting rid of the mechanical fan for an e-fan. I can't believe something so new (2013) still has a mechanical fan. My 2009 F150 had an e-fan (I don't know when they started) I noticed better acceleration and mpg when I switched my 93 chevy to an e-fan, Quieter too.

Agreed but pulley size dictates that. Probably could run a smaller pulley for higher boost. This isn’t all out horsepower, but reliable power for a stock towing truck.
@rotor13
@rotor13 5 жыл бұрын
It runs really low boost, even with the bigger pulley they used and the blower itself is actually quite small. At best they're running 9psi. out of the box IIRC its like 5-6psi. If you're expecting the 200+hp gain that Mustangs and Camaro's are putting out (plus costs $2k+ or more), you're mistaken as these kits run higher boost and the blowers themselves have higher airflow rates. $6k for a blower kit that is this easy to install, in a gas truck that is going to be used for hauling, is a damn good deal. I wish the $10k I paid for my 2.8L Kenne Bell kit for my S500 was cheaper, but the near 800whp its putting down more than makes up for the cost.

The people that are complaining. 1st they are doing it as if you had it and couldn't afford to go buy a diesel but the truck was paid for and you wanted to upgrade it. Hell, you might even like your truck. 2nd if you knew enough to look through the entire dino run, you'd know that the tq they're getting made a huge jump down low, this is not a car motor, it is made to get tq faster. If you had a truck you relied on for towing and getting to work, this boost is safe. You have a truck now that clears 400 hp and tq easy and you're getting more mpg as well as long as you're not standing on it all the time

There are no instances in which a roots blower will be better than a properly tuned turbo setup. Turbos make more power, are way more efficient, are cheaper, cause way less wear and tear on the engine and are easier to work on. A 500whp supercharged engine would make 650-700whp on the same intake pressure if it were turbocharged. It would also do less(or none at all) damage to the main bearings and accessory drive pulleys. Blowers don't make sense on anything but NHRA top fuel engines anymore. They are out dated and have long been passed over for turbos.

He also forgot to mention why turbochargers are MUCH more popular than roots blowers: 1) They are much lighter 2) They are easier to intercool 3) they use virtually "free" exhaust heat to run instead of parasitic drag on the engine 4) turbochargers have adjustable boost so that the boost can be reduced at high RPMs because most engines can handle WAY more power at 3K rpm than they can at 6K rpm so while 15PSI of boost may be safe at midrange only 10PSI of boost may be safe at redline before you start breaking internal components and turbochargers allow that with a simple OBD2 tune.
@BoopSnoot
@BoopSnoot 4 жыл бұрын
Just to say I'm not hating on roots blowers though, and the reason they are typically used by OEMs over turbos is when its a V-engine (two cylinder banks means usually two turbos are needed instead of one like on a inline four or six) and when that V-engine was originally meant to be naturally aspirated in an engine bay designed to fit that. With just a new hood, a single roots is easier to package and install on that V-engine. But most engines, even V-engines, that were designed from the ground up to be boosted will be turbocharged like the ecoboost.

what are those boost curves XD okay the centrifugal and the roots work on the same idea. they are belt driven and work off the engine speed. both give you a linear boost level. not like what is shown in the video in the video they show that a roots is gonna make crazy boost at stupid low rpm....no not unless you have a smaller pulley on it (surprise you can change pulley size on the centrifugal too). but even then its not gonna be like what is shown at all. also a turbo is going to have lag like what is talked about, so in doing so the graph will look exponential because you have to get the turbine spinning with exhaust so you must rev it higher. and also turbos love load, because it makes the engine work harder which means more exhaust sooner which means it spins up faster. there is a reason they use turbos on all commercially sold trucks.
@Clobercow1
@Clobercow1 5 жыл бұрын
Centrifugal and roots are both belt driven, but that doesn't mean they work the same. Positive displacement superchargers push a fixed amount of air and follow the engine RPM. They generally keep the same boost level through the rev range. Centrifugal chargers multiply as the RPM goes up. The downside is that boost is very low at low RPM. A turbo makes use of wasted energy in the exhaust and is less load and more efficient than any supercharger on the engine. Pound for Pound (of boost), turbo's make more power. They're just complicated to set up and very difficult to install. A turbo and a centrifugal have a similar effect on power. Roots and Screw type chargers give you instant boost from IDLE, which is exactly what they want for towing. Throttle response and low RPM power rule in towing, which is why diesel is so popular in big trucks. They could put a small fast spooling turbo on these trucks, but gas engines like to rev and they would drop off in power dramatically and probably make less power overall. It's all about tradeoffs.

Motor is fine. The problem is the pistons. To meet epa requirements the rings had to be moved closer to the end giving it less "meat" making them a little more brittle if you have a detonation so you don't want to go above 5 to 8lbs of boost. by dropping in pistons you say to hell with the epa and you can boost the hell out of it.

I love the trucks. I see them EVERYWHERE. “Truck of the year” yep It sure was! I own a 2003 1500 5.7. Solid truck still! It has mods. Just right amount of power. It was raised a little bit (may lift it a little soon) it has exhausts, K&N air filter, power programmer kit. It’ll make a little over 400hp but even though it’ll make probably 415hp it feels MORE than that. That K&N air filter (it has a larger one) it’ll make it aggressive with the power. I give it just about half throttle and its already going 40mph. Awesome motor but they love fuel. They guzzle. Yep. Mine taking 93 octane all the time... well I’m lucky my local gas station around the corner from my home has good prices. I’ll never let the truck go more under a little under than half a tank. It’ll be 50$ each time I fill it which is... decent. I filled it up at MANY other gas stations of course. Most amount of money I put into fuel for that mofo is 70$... that was just about on E... the gas station down the road from my place is a Citgo by the way. I hate going to Mobil with the truck it’s more expensive. I have added just the right amount of power To my 03 hemi. So damn good! Truck kicks ass.
