Hello, My name is Brian, I am fifteen years old, and I am interested in the history of the castrated ones, in this case I based myself in Moreschi, the last castrato who acted publicly in the churches and we have record of his voice, what I did was "rejuvenate your voice and remove the noise to the recording and add echo to make the live sound more real. the
castratis do not change their voice until 30 years after their castration.
for which moreschi had already changed it when making the recordings in 1902 and 1904 and that is why I made this project to have an idea of how it would have sounded if we had heard it at its best.

The castrati sang in ranges that other men couldn’t reach (obviously) but also sounded way way different from the women’s voices. They were chosen because their child’s voice was very special. And so usually with the parents permission (looking for money) off come the family jewels and the voice matures into the very strange, to us today, castrato. They were extremely popular in the day. I agree. They sound weird and almost disturbing today.

A castrato's lack of testosterone meant that his epiphyses (bone-joints) did not harden in the normal manner. This resulted in the limbs of the castrati often grew unusually long, as did their ribs. This, combined with intensive training, gave them unrivalled lung-power and breath capacity. Operating through small, child-sized vocal cords, their voices were also extraordinarily flexible, and quite different from the equivalent adult female voice.

Even more sad when you learn what poor Alessandro endured as a child. This was recorded when he was I believe close to the end of his life, particularly the Ave Maria. I am definitely curious to know how he sounded while speaking, but I suppose this is the closest we’ll ever hear.

The recording equipment in his day was VERY primitive. Incapable of capturing the high fidelity and nuances of his voice. Even with this reconstruction we cannot come to were his voice was live. With today's recording equipment we would have been dazzled!! Pretty nice as is, given the circumstances. Thanks for the effort and the peek into this incredible world of the Castrati!

It has been suggested that he should be castrated around 1865, but the reasons for this operation remain uncertain: it may be due to a purely medical problem (notably a scrotal hernia) or for musical reasons.

Let's give Professor Moreschi the respect and admiration he so deserved. This wasn't our time, our ways and the world has moved on. The Chinese, East Indians and Egyptians made eunuchs to suit their cultures as well as the Romans. There is unfortunately a mistranslated verse in the NT about men becoming eunuchs to serve God the better. A better translation would have been 'remain celibate ". While this practice is deplorable and abusive to the modern mind, to these people it was acceptable. I for one am very glad civilization has moved on.

He's changing registers. But we have to remember he was old when he recorded it, and probably at the time all the techniques for voice preservation from the castrati golden era were forgotten already. So he's old and with a deteriorated voice. That's probably why his register changes sounds so unmanaged and awful and yet he's able to sing the piece, so, it wasnt lack of technique

The teachers of the bel canto school often encouraged the use of glottal attacks - perhaps to 'kick' the throat open. Moreschi does it a lot! It's also used (discretely) by modern Spanish singers such as De Los Angeles and Caballe, and more obviously by the Turkish Leyla Gencer. I have seen a photo of Moreschi and three other castrati grouped around the baritone Antonio Cotogni - the earliest born singer to have made a recording (born 1831). Cotogni had many famous students, including Gigli, Lauri Volpi and Mario Basiola. One of my singing teachers studied vocal pedagogy with Basiola. I'm proud to have that historical connection!

Hello Brian, I can believe that this is how the young Moreschi sounded, particularly in the first piece ('Domine Salvum Fac Pontificem' by Giovanni Aldega). He sounds a bit like Radu Marian or Vincenzo Capezzuto. You have done a great job with the echo, and with removing the scratch. How did you "rejuvenate" the voice, though? When you have the time, I would love to hear your treatment of Moreschi's 1904 recording of 'Crucifixus', which I think is his best recording.

I think it is qiute ridiculous when 21st century people try to impose their standards on former centuries. We wouldnt do so today. But this was 19th century, and you probably understand better than anyone else npt only the secular power the RCC had at the time .but the weight of centuries of tradition. I enjoy the somewhat otherworldly sound of Profesor Moreschis voice.

If this recording is a more true to life idea of how the castrati actually sounded, I can see (or hear I suppose lol) the appeal. Especially with women being banned for a period of time...it was probably quite difficult to shift back to a more "normalized" sound after hearing and adjusting to so many castrati. I think it would be interesting to find someone (or unfortunately someone's sick parents) who was/were bold enough to attempt castration (and obvious voice training) today, just to give the world a glimpse of what all the rage was about back then.
@ThePauladee
@ThePauladee 5 жыл бұрын
If you mean a current castrati... that would never happen (I hope). They had to castrate a LOT of boys to find the singers, many had the tone and the range, but even if castrated their voices would still go through the change, a voice like Moreschi, for instance, was literally one in a million. They needed a combination of power (provided by castration, because the ribs containing the lungs remained flexible), tonality and pitch (you are born with), range (you can develop), and the higher registers (which even, of the castrati, many lost in adulthood). They also needed to be clean, beautiful, and pious. And of a form to be presented socially. It was an almost insurmountable task.

Thank you for your work on this! Please be kind enough to tell us the speed of playback. I'd like also to hear a version without reverb, when you have the time. We are used to hearing a lot of reverb on modern recordings, so much so that people miss it if it isn't there and it gets added in remastering of older recordings. But live acoustic singing does not have reverb. Live singing needs a less 'wet' acoustic than you have selected, for us to hear the details, or else it becomes muddy. Thank you again for your labour of love, and I wish you great success in your future projects.

That’s amazing! How did you do that? They tried reconstructing a Castrato voice, in a 2005 bbc documentary. The electronics director from this school in Manchester, called David Howard was in charge of the project. And he did the experiment, it was convincing enough for the time. And he presented Moreschi’s 1904 Ave Maria recording, but he did say that, the complete recording of Moreschi’s voice was not fully there do to the old recording. This is quite convincing though!
