Project Range Rover Sport - Replacing the brake master cylinder

In this video we have a go at replacing the brake master cylinder on our project Range Rover Sport TDV6 Diesel. This is the first time we have done this so its not a slick master guide but just Dan and I having a go and its not too tricky.
This should be the same procedure for the Land Rover Discovery 3 and 4.

Quick tip...if undoing a nut wih a socket and you are afraid of losing it, put some general purpose grease in your socket.....it should hold it while you withdraw the socket. Great video chaps.

Now, I Know all model years are different and all types of cars are different, but can't you just press the brake pedal full brickload, and loosen the cogs from the master cylinder to release the air instead of bleeding the brakes? a quizzical question and a fan like me of automechanics would like to know :) Bonkers Brilliant, your friend Robbie G.

Awesome video thank you - watched this video and the original where you changed the master cylinder - how did you know the servo rod hadn’t centered itself into the master cylinder piston? I just changed my MS and think the same thing has happened my pedal goes to the floor when I start it

Hello I have a 2013 sport and I found a puddle of clear oily liquid toward the driver side. I think it’s brake fluid, would you have any clue as to where it could come from? Thanks!

Was it towards the rear ? the rear brake pipes rust on the L320 sport 2005-2013 but you car should be the later 2013 L494 ? not sure but get it checked ! brake fluid has a strange smell - check the brake fluid resevoir to see if the level has gone down !

Another enjoyable video on your Range Rover. Brake fluid is hygroscopic, it sounded like you said hydroscopic. My bad if you didn't.

A excellent video, but towards the end I realised it is not possible to do this job without the electronicy diagnostic tool, and the knowledge to use it, it would be a good idea to get some wing protectors or even an old tarp to protect your paintwork from the ravages of the brake fluid drips, and I always slip a cover over the end of undone brake pipes to stop the ingress of crud, although you area looks very clean. I had the same sinking pedal after changing all 4 calipers on my Discovery 3 even after bleeding from the calipers. I thought the master cylinder was knackered too but I ended up getting more air out from the 2 pipes going from the master cylinder. Just a case of someone pumping the pedal as I undid the brake pipe nuts. Took about 4 to 5 pumps on each pipe. The pedal then stopped sinking. The pedal was still spongy so I used a diagnostic tool (icarsoft LR V2.0) with the ABS bleed function. The pedal is now firm at the top again. Great video again guys!

Use clean fluid on the reservoir when you are fitting it onto the master cylinder as a lubricant

I think you may be on the right track - i did not check and this would have been a wise move. The servo is working ( in that it pushes the pedal down ). The vacuum also holds so i think it should be OK... there is no sign of leakage from the master cylinder. I may buy a servo and cut it open.

powerfulukltd No need to get your grinder out for this! Just remove the vacuum pipe on servo and dip a white cable tie down to the bottom and see if it comes back with oil on. This is the LR TSB method. If yes the vacuum pump probably needs replacement.

@@simonjefferson Thanks for replying, I thought the report only listed the binding brakes and the wheel bearing, surely the authorities require all defects to be listed - as powerfulukltd has found out there's more to brakes than just the bits on the wheels. I know a similar report here in Queensland, Australia would have to list all defects found even if there were multiple defects in the same component. To pass, all he had to do was fix what was listed and then driven away with a very defective master cylinder. See what I mean?
