You do EXCELLENT work! I mean that! However in my humble opinion to anyone who may be watching this video, you should have installed an aftermarket AFPR. the stock fuel pressure regulator can be easily over run, especially during idle and low boost conditions with something like a Walbro 255 shoveling fuel through it, making tuning incredibly difficult and possibly even dumping fuel back into the manifold once the diaphragm rips!! Just one small thing I observed that could have been done differently, thanks for the videos!

just an added note: Read your service manual on how to release the Pressure in the system, usually you open the filler, disconnect the main relay (or power to pump) and consume the leftover fuel in the lines. if you forget this step, you better have eye-protection and a ton of shop rags ;) (learned the hard way)

With the fuel pump wiring relay, isn't it less than ideal to not run it directly to the pump? You ran it to the outside of the FP housing that still leaves a few inches of oem small gauge wiring...

Another impressive and interesting video, Tom. Good job! I have a question: You're all over the car, making changes here and there, so do you test your car to make sure it still runs before going on to another area? If not, it would be a bad thing if you had a malfunction (despite your meticulous attention to detail) and you had to figure out where the problem is. I'm eagerly waiting for you newest video! I want to see this baby run!
@TomsTurboGarage
@TomsTurboGarage 10 жыл бұрын
Thank you Rick, I appreciate that! I prefer to work that way, making only one or two small changes and then testing, but when taking on a bigger project like this you don't have the luxury of doing that. I just go way over the top with my checklists and quadruple checking everything I do to try and avoid mistakes/rework.

Yes, most Japanese cars offer an access panel either in the trunk/hatch or under the back seat. MUCH easier than dropping a gas tank.

That auto-meter boost gauge is the old one from the Buick! I'm really interested to see how it all works, especially he exhaust. I've never heard of putting a wastegate back there.. It works the same as a cut-out, right? Just opens automatically when it senses that it's under high boost? Love the vids Tom. Keep it up please!

Thanks man and yes, I believe it is! I actually have a couple extras. Yes, the wastegate just works just like an electric cutout, it just uses boost instead of electricity.

Thanks for responding. So essentially, when the exhaust-mounted-wastegate sees boost over a certain PSI, it will open? That's very clever! I love your videos. They encourage me to work on my own cars! I just added a 1st gen DSM (1990 Plymouth Laser RS!!) to the stable, so I will be watching these videos especially closely. Unfortunately, mine is FWD and N/A, but still with the 4G63 and 5 speed. It's pretty quick as it is, but it needs some work. I'm thinking of some sort of 2.5" Mandrel-bent catback-exhaust, a REAL cold air intake, not one of those cone filters on the end of a piece of pipe like most companies sell, cams, and some sort of a tune. Does ECM-link make a Naturally aspirated form of tune? I'd like to get one, if possible. I'm also looking to lower it a little, since the stock 25 year old struts/shocks are blown. I have had good luck with Bilstein in the past, and I'm hoping to find some sporty shocks. Either Bilstein, Koni, or Tokico, hopefully, paired with some slight lowering springs. I'd really like a set of 2G Eclipse wheels, I like them a lot! I may end up turboing the car. I'm looking into the 4G63 NA to Turbo swap. I'm hoping to keep the cost down as much as I can, since it is a daily driver, but.. that turbo sound on your talon is so mean! So much inspiration! I especially love the sound of DSMs with open o2 dumps! Thanks again Tom. I really really appreciate all the videos, they're wonderful. You're a really really nice guy. :]

Tom what year EVO did that 399 MAS come out of? Seeing how you had such success with that setup I am going to do the same.

I don't recall, it was likely an early Evo 8 or 9.

Hey Tom, have you tuned SD yourself yet? If you ever wanted to go SD, I could set it up for you. Drivability would still be great. I've done it for a couple guys on my local forum already.

Thank you for the kind offer! I have tuned SD and ran it on my Talon. It worked perfectly and I loved how it ran. At this conservative power level, the MAF just made more sense to me.

Haha, well that's likely. It's more of a fun challenge really, it's not like I'm out street racing every weekend. I'm old.
