PROJECT TROY - Scene 13 - PRIAM - 'THE BOY UNDER THE BED'

PROJECT TROY is a modern re-imagining of the Trojan War, told through a series of monologues performed by actors (National Theatre/RSC/West End), voice actors (Baldurs Gate 3/Cyberpunk 2077/Rogue Trader 40k) and content creators.
All 26 monologues are written by celebrated playwright Ross McGregor who has been nominated for over 25-Off WestEnd Awards.
A note from the author:
The story of Troy is one of the most complex of the known mythologies, pulling in humans, gods
and the fates, from a series of curses against the line of Priam and his children. It is, most
famously, a massive war over a stolen woman, and yet the story of Troy is so much more than just
a lot of shouting over someone called Helen. It touches the highest and lowest, the pristine
monarch and lowly shepherd, spanning generations and at times concerning itself with the very
fabrics of society, psychology and reality.
In terms of the modernisation of the adaptation, for an adaptation it most certainly is, I wanted to
bring the idea of gods and kings into the current time, and whilst we still most certainly have both of
them, their importance in the zeitgeist seems to have perhaps diminished. The giants of our time
are in tech and media, making cars and space rockets, or selling out Wembley Stadium in fourteen
minutes, or boxing Mike Tyson for money, or giving out free houses on KZbin, or running a
podcast so popular it could choose the next President. A recent “scientific” study of every known
recorded instance of the visage of God appearing on commonplace objects was recently correlated
into a single median face - and the headlines that followed were the overwhelming agreement that
Jesus now looks like Elon Musk. Hamlet said there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking
makes it so, which I assume means that if you start seeing Joe Rogan in your morning fried eggs,
it says more about you than the hen that laid them. These gods of our modern age, these heroes
of subscriptions, swipes and screens.
In Troy, at this point in the arc of the grand narrative, mankind is starting to move out from under
the sandal of Zeus and his strange family, and finally think for itself about what they want the world
to be, and in what image they want it made in. It seems timely as America and the United
Kingdom both enter into election years, to write something about the future. About how we can
sculpt it, change it, adapt it and remake it. How we can leave the horrors of the past, let the
wounds heal, and finally look past the wrongs and woes and terrible secrets left gasping on the
shores. Perhaps some curses can’t be avoided. Perhaps some fates are sealed. But hope is
eternal, and life is nothing but a series of changes you routinely fail to see coming. So here’s to old
stories, may they ever seem new. Every age needs its heroes, and every good tale needs
someone left to tell it.
