Marius, I just wanted to say how awesome I find you and your projects. I'm still not brave enough to attempt a bandsaw build at 35, but to then problem solve that issue and present a video about it in a second language is quite incredible. If there's ever anything you want from the UK let me know, I run a transport company and will organise free shipping on anything up to a pallet in volume as a thank you for the entertainment you provide :-) Have a great day.

Hello Marius, as for the bolt, in the US we call that "galling". Galling happens when a small imperfection catches the other part, and begins rolling up like a snow ball. Once this happens, no mater which way you turn the nut, or bolt, it just locks up tighter. I work in the boating industry, and I have found that the problem happens more often with stainless steel fasteners. I can also say that I have Never experienced galling on a lubricated fastener. I always put a bit of grease on stainless bolts and machine screws, and this has solved the problem for me. I know that lubricants attract debris, so it is a trade off.

Enjoy the videos. Keep 'em coming! I bought a piece of colored wood like you have and turned a pen on the lathe with it. It turned out great but I thought I could do better, so I sliced the wood on a diagonal and that pen turned out wild looking. Just a suggestion. Give it a shot.

Marius, In the U.S. I ran into a similar problem with flex on my X-Carve after adding a heaver router (DeWalt 611) and dust shoe. The fix for me was to add a 3/16" X 2" X 36" piece of steel inserted between the rails and held in place by 5 furniture bolts. Took care of the problem for me!

That's exactly what I'm going to do with the x-carve x axis maker slides. I think it will work well, even when I upgrade to a bigger router for the spindle. And so much easier than what many others have done, with taking it all apart to install a piece of steel between them.

Hi Marius! Very enjoyable video! I make videos too, mostly woodturning, and then sharpening and other bits, my main audience is Spanish speaking, but I live in the US so I also make the videos in English. I am from Uruguay, so my main language is Spanish and sometimes, when I record myself and listen to the takes for the English version, I do not even know what I tried to say. All this to say: I really enjoyed the outtakes and my admiration dear friend for the effort! Cheers! Daniel

The bandsaw tensioning bolt vibration and non use may have melded the cheap soft metal together. Don't know but glad you were able to fix it and modify your xCarve track.
@davidvierling6849 жыл бұрын
Marius, I suggest you add some anti-seize compound to the threads of your new bolt. I think that vibration in the saw is causing fretting on the hardware, therefore welding them together. This is a common problem with stainless steel hardware also.
@MikeGusFifteen9 жыл бұрын
This may sound kinda stupid, but I'd totally make tool handles out of that spectra plywood. You'll see it almost every day!
@cky51179 жыл бұрын
You should put some anti-seize lubricant on the threads of the bolts. You can get it on most auto parts stores. It will prevent the nut from getting stuck with the bolt. Keep up the good work.

Back to why the nut seized up on the bolt. You need to put a bit of never-seiz on the thread ... With that tension you friction welded the threads, not uncommon with bolts that are plated and screwed up and down. Nice job on the video.

Bei der Schraube der Bandsäge wird sich das Gewinde verzogen haben, bedingt durch die hohen und dauerhaften Zugkräfte, die auf dem Gewinde lasten. Versuch mal ein Trapezgewinde, das hält wesentlich mehr Kräfte aus.

I had the tension threads collapse on my bandsaw once (mine is commercially made). Those should probably be acme threaded bolts.
@DBYNOE8 жыл бұрын
At the point of placing the bolt in the vice, a good cherry red Mapp gas heating of the nut/bolt (propane is often not hot enough) combo would have loosened it right up (old mechanics trick for tough muffler bolts).

Also putting some axle grease or its equivalent on that nut and bolt should prevent a reoccurance of that thread lockup you just had.

@MariusHornberger9 жыл бұрын
+Franz Sadler Ja, die Mutter hat gefressen. Das neue Gewinde hab ich geschmiert aber nicht im Video erwähnt.

Good video Marius. I have a question for you about your English. Do you speak it at work/school or just in your videos? My son and I watch your videos each week and we were curious how you came to speak it so fluently? I have a friend that was raised in Mexico and he tells me that he thinks in Spanish and then has to translate it into English before he speaks. He says it can be very tiring at times. This makes us appreciate what you do even more! Keep up the great videos!
@MariusHornberger9 жыл бұрын
+Chem Cody I only speak English in my videos and that's all practice I got. (+ the basic stuff that I learned in school)
@boelwerkr9 жыл бұрын
+Chem Cody If you don't mind i will answer that as a not native speaker myself. When i started learning English i had to translate every word from German, and then reorganize the sentence to English grammar. But over the time i learned phrases and words that are not fully translatable to German, so i started to "mix up" German and English in my head and now, when I'm talking or writing English, i think in English. It's easier and you can speak and write more fluently, but my vocabulary and grammar is much more limited and i think i sound dumb sometimes. In addition English is a language of words not of grammar. On the other hand German is a language of grammar not of words. German has much more rules how to phrase things, construct words and sentences, modifying words for a need and so on. So there is no need for such a big range of words as in English. So i struggle sometimes to phrase thing as eloquent in English as i can in German because i don't know the word to do so. A nice example of the diffences is 'lathe'. in geman it's "Drehbank" and the lieral translation is 'turning bench'. Many German words describe things. English words don't do that, they're 'only' names for things.
@MariusHornberger9 жыл бұрын
+boelwerkr Yeah, English is much easier. I think learning German is very difficult. I my first videos I was also thinking in German and translating and speaking in English. Now I more or less already think in English, which makes all the talking much easier.

I had the same thing happen to my 14” bandsaw I built what happen to mine is part of one of the threads broke off then got displaced inside the nut effectively locking the bolt into the nut. My fix was to replace the bolt with a stainless steel nut and bolt so that the threads would be stronger it’s held out for 2 years now. I’m currently building the 20” version now of Matthias Wendell’s design
