As a reminder of how deadly homelessness in Canada can be, Toronto Homeless Memorial recently added its 1,000th name. People are dying outside in the freezing cold. There is not enough housing nor are there enough shelter beds for all of the homeless people who need to get inside. It's a very serious crisis.
This is the 21st year my friend Jody Steinhauer has put on Project Winter Survival to help homeless people during Toronto, Canada's freezing cold. Jody founded the Canadian charity Engage and Change. Engage and Change is a charity that was created to foster good citizenship and encourage healthy communities by giving back. Engage and Change gives people and companies the opportunities to do hands-on group volunteer projects that assemble and build kits to assist in the alleviation of poverty. These kits are then distributed to the local communities through social service agencies directly to those in need.

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, a living wage or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

Homelessness is fixable. We need to all work together. We need jobs for people, affordable housing, help for the physically and mentally disabled. Greed is the main problem. God bless our homeless and everyone out there trying to help. i dont have a lot of money, but i do what i can to help. I used to volunteer at a church, we gave out food to the poor and needy and i can tell you the need is tremendous. I can no longer volunteer due to health issues and i miss it so much. Now i do things on my own to help the poor. Not everyones a drug addict, most are just normal people trying to survive. If you can do something to help someone, please do so. I guarantee it will change your life! Remember to be grateful everyday for what you have!

Thank you sooo much! Whether it’s the snow of Toronto or the cold, rainy nights of the San Francisco Bay Area, no one should be lying on concrete in misery. As a society, if we get more outraged about a stray dog than a human lying in a gutter, something has gone horribly wrong with our moral compass...

Of course, Kayla! Also please go to nationalhomeless.org for ways to prepare, especially if you are weeks or days away. There is help, you just have to explore every available resource in your community and be persistent. Something not easy to do when you are going through the trauma of this possibility, I know. The more knowledge you have, however, the better choices you can make and know there are many people wanting to help, even though the need is great. Peace to you...

Scott Morrison I think you’re right.. I feel like I’ve been walking around with my eyes closed because where was I when the homeless multiplied a thousand times over.. my eyes are wide open now and it hits me like a kick to the gut to see whole families in tents and vehicles, and worst of all, there’s no place for them to make a home! Everything costs a fortune.

@@xfrosty9176 there's more to becoming homeless than anyone thinks. Ever been stalked, attacked in every way? Doesn't matter if you are skilled, skills don't deter you from becoming a victim, of anything and literally everything. If you are alive, you are capable of anything. If you, or anyone doesn't exist, than you will have the exception of never becoming a victim of anything, because you don't exist, not even in the spiritual realm. With that said, what you said was totally irrelevant. If you don't get what I just said and start complaining, you need help, more than the homeless. So complain, because that will be your first reaction. I'll be waiting to see if what I said was true. The most powerful assets a human had now a days and maybe for centuries now is lies and denial, especially hate. Love is being eaten alive everyday by hate, and that is why we have homeless people. Media proves it all, and you'd see it all around you if you opened your eyes. But I take it that you wanna keep them closed and open your mouth to talk crap instead? Because I see that happening with you.

I have helped just a few on occasion but some have been so high and come at my family violently so we stopped. I lived in TO in the late 70s & 80s, then came back to the US. We didn't have many openly homeless that I remember. A few people here or there. I heard from a Canadian friend there is a place for homeless near where she works. When I lived there I had 4 jobs at one point. A 9 to 5 office job and side jobs like Fotomat or working downtown Yorkville and bookwork on the side for a company. Hard to see homeless now. It makes me sad to see people displaced. Canada was far better than the US in more ways than one, but it's becoming a global issue it seems.

How is this not a government problem? They donate MILLIONS of tax payers dollars each year to other countries, they live high off the hog in their fancy homes while we have all these homeless people out on our streets. We go to work,we pay all kinds of taxes and the government takes that money and sends it elsewhere before helping the very people who pay into it all. Yes we all need to help as well but to say it's "not a government problem" is not true.

What I can't understand is why in Western countries. You guys pay so much in taxes Why is the money not being used to rehabilitate people. I spent twenty years in taiwan I very rarely saw lots of homeless people But I came back to california and it's like a lot of homes you have people who are just barely making it I'm trying to get resettled and right now i'm starting a job at kohl's. I'm sure it'll give me money to take ubers to go to work, but that's the extent of it. I'm going back to a continuing education school to learn computer software. It really don't understand why everything is so expensive. You know, for $1700 a month and Taiwan. You can rent a three redtube apartment. You can have a vehicle with new tires. You can have enough money to provide for a father and mother and a kid. I truly don't understand. I've been told that in other states particularly red states, it can be possible to live well I don't know. I just know i've been back four months If it doesn't work out by the end of the year I think i'm just gonna go back to taiwan. I still have a resident visa there that's good 5 years I just needed to learn some skills because now entire one. They're always used powerpoint and presentations and stuff like that when teaching.

Mark, even in Canada, we require affordable housing!!!!. I am on a wait list now, 12 years. I will most likely pass away in my basement 3 1/2 which costs me 60% of my income. Also, hydro and hot water are extra. So, there is little left over. I am lucky to buy what I need-forget about wanting. Plus, I spend a small fortune for my outdoor homeless cats-which are spade/neutered through a rescue. I need litter, bags for the litter, cans of food, dry food, etc-it never ends!!! My needs are few. I have one hot meal a day. it's enough. I am grateful to have a bed and roof over my head. Still I am isolated as I never feel well enough to do anything. Each day I push to get something accomplished as to keeping up with my apartment. No friends or living relatives...it can get lonesome at moments!!! Hope to catch the next live chat!!!

@@scottowensbyable ... some systems nurture selfishness and greed MORE than others. In some preliterate societies, the concept of personal possessions is unknown. In some North West North American tribes, wealth was measured by how much you gave away and not how much you would hoard. The United States today has a disparity of wealth that is greater than almost any society in history. it is unbalanced and our society is likely to follow the path taken by the France of Louis XVI.

Hell, Mark it's not only the cost of living that is so high that forces people to be homeless. The High Cost of Living and the fact that business owners can't employ as many people as they should nor can they pay the people they do employ as much as they should is all the reasons there is homelessness and it's called the rich are severely rich and the poor well they don't matter. There are plenty of places for people to live It's just sad that billionaires don't care about other people

If you are truly concerned for taking care of our most vulnerable, then please please please consider voting for Andrew Yang in your state primary. We have trusted the government for too long and the simple truth is these government programs do NOT work. I am a high school teacher and I work two other part time jobs to support my family of three. My ex-husband abandoned us when I was pregnant with my second child. I was either in the hospital or on bed rest during my entire pregnancy because I was bleeding and had severe back pain. My FMLA expired and I lost my job. Thankfully, I had a mother that allowed me to move back home. When I was cleared to return to work, 8 months after delivering at only 29 weeks. It was 2012. I worked for 7.35. My mother helped me get signed up for child support, which I never received. My mother helped me get signed up for section 8. The waiting list was 6 months long. The voucher for a household size of 3 was $355 in 2012. I was never able to find an apartment or housing that cheap. I had to go to a 2 bedroom 725 sq. ft. trailer. And the landlord wanted me to pay for lawncare, pest control, cable, internet, provide my own appliances other than a stove. He also refused to fix things that were broken. I reported it to section 8. They said my only recourse was to move, but considering that I didn't have many options in the first place I dediced to just work through this temporary problem. I decided to take a second job. As a result, my rent voucher was reduced to $150. I had to pay the rest. At this time, my landlord increased the rent to $400 due to the rules of a new lease agreement with HUD. He was allowed to do that based on my increased income. I was working 2 minimum wage jobs for a total of 60 hours per week. Most of my check went to childcare $170 - $255 per week depending on the hours I worked and the rest went to the $245 rent and $100ish utilities. Thank God I had foodstamps. My only source of income was from 2 W2s that year. I made a total of $19,678. First of the year I received a raise to $9 per hour at my full-time job. I was kicked off the section 8 program here in Alabama because I made too much money. Thank God for EIC. I used my $5000 tax refund to pay rent for next couple of months. I could not find 2 bedroom housing for less than $600 per month in a 40 mile radius. I applied for a mortgage. Thankfully I had a parent willing to co-sign. I bought a nice but small house for $79,000. My monthly mortgage payment is $533. I was able to do these things through the benevolence of FAMILY. What if I had to rely on the government to help me? I sympathize with anyone in these situations. The only government option that I believe truly helped me and made sense was the EIC tax credit. The rest would've been inadequate at best. My mom and my church had to help me in so many ways over the five years that I was adjusting to a divorce, a tough pregnancy, and premature delivery. I will never forget the times I had to ask for extensions to pay my light bill and how rude people were to me when I wasn't able to pay. Sitting in the dark in my trailer and how that impacted my son who was in kindergarten at the time. There are so many people working hard that are not able to afford housing. We have trusted the government for solutions and they have failed us. They have so many government employees sitting in these nice offices to process these applications and I am sure they waste more money than they spend on actual housing vouchers. It is time to extend what works and cut what doesn't. How many of you see a boost in your local economies around February? That is the impact of tax refund. We need UBI now. We have to give people money so that they can pay for what is needed most to improve their own lives. I didn't eat $600 worth of groceries. I typically spent $300-400. I could've used the remainder to by a washing machine to keep me out of shady laundromats at 11 on with 2 kids sleeping in my car while I did our clothes. I could've paid my light bill. We have got to elect someone serious about solving the problem of poverty. In the words of MLKadvocated for the universal basic income in his final book, 1967's Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community? Washington DC's previous efforts to fight poverty, he concluded, had been "piecemeal and pygmy." The government believed it could lift up the poor by attacking the root causes of their impoverishment one by one-by providing better housing, better education, and better support for families. But these efforts had been too small and too disorganized. Moreover, he wrote, "the programs of the past all have another common failing-they are indirect. Each seeks to solve poverty by first solving something else." Elect Andrew Yang. Receive $1000 per month regardless of your age, income, employment, household size. No application process. No waiting list. No stigma. No evil stares. Just money. We can fix homelessness with universal basic income. Thank you reading a snippet of my story.

I visited Mexico in 1987and was shocked by the poverty and people begging in the streets. One year later I went to work in Boston and encountered worse conditions. I was stepping over homeless people in the street on the way to my office every day. 32 years later people think this is normal. It's not it's shameful. This problem has gone on for far too long and is solveable. Let's stop pretending it doesn't exist and elect some decent human beings into government who are actually capable of changing this now.

I just hate the thought of so many millionaires in the world . & they could be helping the homeless. I'm poor but if I had alot of money I would buy some property & build on it homes for homeless. Don't have to be big, just warm & safe place to lay their heads. I know someone's gonna say why don't they get off their butt & do something, well they don't realize how bad it is, people do work & become homeless. Rent is just too dang high. Somethings gotta give...

Questions that arose when I watched this video: Where are the thousands of homeless in Toronto camping? Are they all actually outside in tents? How do they survive without heat, or, do they have access to heat somehow? How many are in homeless shelters vs living and sleeping on the streets? Comment: About whose responsibility it is: It is each individual's (and family's) responsibility to do everything possible not to become homeless. However, once homeless, it is the government's responsibility to help these people out of that situation, and get them into treatment if necessary. These Toronto business owners are really donating time and resources to help people in their community. How much will Canada be paying in security bills for ex-royals Harry and Megan? IS that the Canadian government's job given that these two are not there on official state visits because they're out of 'royal life' and in Canada by choice, not invitation. Does anyone see the problem here? Canadians need to rally to have these people housed, and to stop the endless flow of money for the security costs of a British and an American citizen who just happen to choose to live there. Sooner or later, Canadians will be (or should be) fed up with that situation and demand that the gov. stop paying their security bills and route the money toward helping homeless Canadians.

Everyone should be able to dig up some extra blankets for them. We only had a week of snow in Victoria and I took over some blankets. Those folks must be tough to endure 4 straight months of Ontario winter.

Im looking for a homeless man from toronto if anyone can help? Hes called anthony ali and used to visit the york recreation centre where he used to broadcast live youtube videos, hes not been heard of for a couple of months and people are worried, does anyone know him and where he is? Even if it just to let people know what has happened would be a help to us, please help if you know of his whereabouts 🙂

Just look at all the clothes and other things that are thrown into dumpsters from big stores that could be donated to the homeless... can these store be approached to donate instead of filling the landfill.

Your only a little less than 100 miles north of Buffalo NY. There is a large number of home EMS folks here as well! You should stop down by the greyhound station downtown, there are bridges and a park downtown where they stay.. even in sub zero temps..people are outside here living on the streets, and sleeping outside, on bldg vents , in doorways downtown, also near the Key bank center..it is so sad$... I am so grateful for what you do! Awareness is everything! You can look me up if ya make it here to western New York, I can show 6a around...
