Update: Thanks to chadd Astronomo for informing me the Evolution now has a firmware update and includes RSSI in the telemetry. Also, the Taranis X9D does have a headphone jack. I also forgot to mention that the Evolution does come with batteries and is charged through a micro USB port.

I've been away from the Hobby for a while, so I am not too familiar with these new Radios. I just purchased a FlySky i10 cuz it looked like it would be super easy to program, even though at first, the smartphone like interface seems a bit gimmicky. Do other "Legendary" Radios have any advantages, over say something like an i10, in terms of hardware or anything? Only thing I can see on down side with i10 is the lack of switchable backboard removable module, so that you can switch between other brand's protocols. I already have nuff radios reducing my living space, so I like to have as few as possible.

I have also switched over from the Taranis to the Evolution for thumb flying quads and I love it, I have to agree entirely with all your sentiments here. For my fixed wing aircraft though the Taranis, OpenTX and speech telemetry is king! Keep up the great videos you are my favorite channel now..

Thanks for the useful comparison. One feature that may make the original Taranis worth while for some, is the sliders. I use a slider to control flaps on fixed wing airplanes like the Durafly Tundra. You can also use a switch, but sometimes it is an advantage to have fine control over the flap position.

Hi, Can the Taranis Q X7 still connect via USB to the pc for simulators. I am new to the scene so please excuse my lack of knowledge but after flying a couple of drones, I realise I need to get a few hours on a sim before I go any further. Not a clue how to get the Taranis connected to play sims but I am sure I will eventually get my head around it somehow. I have just ordered the X9D Plus and was not aware of the QX7. I do have the option of sending it back and getting the QX7 but not sure if I should or just keep it. I know that the X9D + can connect via USB to the PC to play sims but then again, I do not know how to do that either lol. Sorry, I did mention that I do not know much but hey-ho, we all have to start somewhere. Thank you in advance for any advice you can send my way.

The Evo is so comfortable and it's simplicity is great for new comers like me. I'll have to look into that update. Other manufacturers should look at making transmitters in this form factor.

Thanks for the review. I'm probably going to get an X7 as it's difficult to justify the extra cost and given how quickly new radios are being released, by the time I outgrow it there will probably be a newer, better model out. Also one other thing, I'm told that there is a firmware difference in that the X7 doesn't support global variables, not that it really matters and I suspect most people will neither notice or care.

Hi, I'm super new to all this. I understand that telemetry is "the process of recording and transmitting the readings of an instrument" (thanks, google), but I'm not sure if I'd be interested in transmitting/recording any readings while flying around in an fpv drone. Since a lot of your recommendations depend on whether we are interested in telemetry or not, I should probably figure out if I am haha. For context, I'm excited to race fpv drones and do freestyle acro, but also go make use of an fpv drone for a little sky tourism (Going to the Grand Canyon in the Summer and would love to fly around and explore if it's legal). I feel like telemetry might allow me to create a program that allows me to set a drone to a sort of auto pilot, where I can flip a switch and it maintains a hovering position at whatever altitude I flip the switch at (I assume I'd need a program that can read an altimeter to do this, and telemetry seems like it might have something to do with that, idfk). I have no idea if this is even possible, but if it is, and it requires telemetry, that'll help inform my purchase. Thanks!

Love your videos but confused on your comments on the flysky X6B receiver compared to the turnigy one. The X6B is way better. It is smaller and doesn't have the silly long pins of the turnigy one, or the silly long antennas, and it can be stack mounted. Im having to use the turnigy one in a new build as I've run out of x6b's and it's incredibly annoying. I ended up cutting off the pins. Even if you take the turnigy out of its case, it's much bigger. On the a8s I haven't had any issues on the v2s which were out really quickly.

I'll be the cat amongst the pidgeons and say I'll still stick to my futaba 8fg. Had it quite a while now and its been absolutely flawless with all aspects of my RC flying, from racing quads, 500 size helis to large scale gas 3d planes. It may lack certain features that newer radios have but for me nothing can replace the trust I have in the system.

You don't have to do anything to any transmitters to use the betaflight OSD. Just watch my video on entering the menu. It works on every transmitter.

Why in your opinion does the A8s "suck". Range test seem fine for close proximity, it has sbus and ibus. It is considerably smaller than all other options on the Turnigy and it functions perfectly. Myself and many others have been using it on our acro and race quads and none of us have ever had any issues.

Have you experienced any comms/ brownout problems with the evolution Tx/ flysky receivers? Flysky has a pretty bad rep in the community to the point where its the first thing people blame as problem. Might just be usual trolling.... I have a few friends that fly the i6 radios and they have had failsafe issues before. Not sure if issues were radio or receiver at fault. They've also mentioned quality issues inside the transmitters(i6)- not sure about receivers Some of me thinks a lot of the problems are the quads' antenna placement - I see a lot of people not following best practice. I wish the Evo was frsky- my Taranis would gather dust if I could use it on my current quads :)

Many people are having problems with the Flysky A8S on normal sized quads, but not on micro 1s and 2s quads. Not sure why it works for those. I haven't used the second flysky receiver that much or long enough to find problems so I couldn't say. And I've had no problems with the Turnigy IA6c.

And I agree, FrSky guts inside the evolution case would be my ultimate transmitter. I'd never buy another again. Hopefully frsky sees the great sales the evolution has and makes something similar.

Albert Kim did a range test with the A8S and turned after aprox. 500m because his video signal was bad. Iforce2d tested the normal size receivers and reached 2.3km with them. I often had brownouts with my Spektrum RX on my quads. Whe you d punch outs the voltage will sag and there is a lot noise from the ESC in the system. However since I use low ESD capacitors in my quads I didn't have such issues. RF gear is dependent on stable a stable energy source. I think this might be the 2nd biggest sin after bad antenna placing.

Turnigy Evolution. New to hobby. Building a Hobby King HK SK450 Quad Frame. just for fun flying not racing or FPV. I may do that later. I really like this radio vs the other model in this price range. I also like the console style look and feel since i use PS4 controllers. Super easy actually, I took my x9d apart and hydro dipped it. you just unplug the connections and unscrew the boards. I would recommend going to aloft hobbies and ordering the following before you do it. the A8S has had serious teething issues. Several batches are faulty and jam your RC inputs so you quad doesn't respond. Dangerous AF. The x6b when drilled stacks on the flight stack.

Yeah I had 4 of them do it in 3 different quads. They seem to work okay in 2S (using one in my DYS elf) and below, but anything higher causes issues. Flysky are testing the v3 version now, but just for now use a FS-RX2a or a FS82. Either of those are proven to work.

If You ever wanna fly planes the Rotary sliders on the X9D is a must for flaps. You can reach them while on the sticks which is a big plus vs the new X7 unfortunately. I think the X7 is a way better deal for any new pilots tho even with its shortcomings. I will stick with my X9D and just ordered the new higher resolution hall effect gimbals 4 it . They are making some for the X7 later this year supposedly. Rip out the battery tray and put in a lipo just as he has done here. If your quad only guy the Turnigy is fine tho I bet. Although range limited and no modules can be put in it for other brands of recievers like both the taranis radios. Open TX is a huge world :)

I have the x9d. and I will say its better than the Q X7 mainly because it has more Options. Of cause, if multi rotors are the only thing you are going to fly and you know that you will never fly anything other than that. Maby the Q x7 are for you. but once you add it all up it's not really cheaper than the X9D. $105+ battery $15+ import taxes (if you are outside the US). so before you have covered all expenses. you might just grab An X9D in your Local store or in a web store within your country. for the same price or maybe even cheaper used

Search for Eneloop batteries on Amazon. Terrific rechargeable AA and AAA batteries. The are all I use at my house. They have adapters so you can use them in C and D size applications. Excellent value!

On RC Groups some of the Spektrum Devs said that FrSky is buying the higher range by the cost of higher latency. Recently the Raceflight Devs did some measurements that seem to prove that. Yea I saw their test. But it pissed off a lot of people because they tested in PPM, which is slower than SBUS. Thats why everyone uses the XSR, X4R-SB, and XM+ receivers instead of the D4R-II. The Raceflight guys are good at making people believe that something is better than something else for any reason that benefits them. For example D Shot is better than Multishot, but D shot cant be used at 32k like Multishot. So they make videos telling everyone Multishot is better but D shot at 8k is still better than Multishot at 32k. If people knew the truth then they wouldn't use Raceflight because 32k is what sells Raceflight. So they twist the words around to make people believe. Same thing with the transmitters. The latency between FrSky and Spektrum is the same. But they only want to spend time on the code for Spektrum to make all their features work. So now they have to tell people Spektrum is better. What a better way than testing the Taranis in PPM mode. So technically they are not lying to you. PPM is slower. But if they did the test with SBUS the results would be different, then people would say "give us more FrSky code", and they dont want to do that extra work.

you forget helicopter pilots which taranis is useless :) futaba has the best potentiometers and resolutions etc etc .....and if someone dont know how to fly hard 3D helicopters....HE DONT KNOW NOTHINGS ;)
