ROUND 2 lineup: Stihl vs EGO, ECHO, Husqvarna, Oregon, WEN and DeWalt. In round 1, the 60V DeWalt outperformed the other brands, winning the showdown. Saws tested in 3 events: 2 cutting speed tests on 4x4 lumber and 1 test on hardwood. Battery charge time and run time under continuous load, noise level, and no load sprocket speed tested. I purchased all of the chainsaws tested. Thanks for supporting the channel!

Purchased the Echo 8 months ago. I've run chainsaws professionally for many years. Wear and tear on my arm and shoulder when starting had me checking out cordless saws. We've always used commercial grade Sthils and Husqvarna's so I was a bit concerned about the Echo's performance. That said I'm very impressed, runs like a demon, really as good as your tests suggest. No issues after lots of brush clearing and multiple cords of firewood.

Awesome comparison video. So easy to follow, the design of the tests make perfect sense and the graphs make it simple. Only suggestion would be to add a final tally graph. When searching for my new saw, I had to look at the video over and over to see what battery power was being used. I was going to buy the echo but do not like the fact that I need tools to adjust the screws on the bar. I had a gas Stihl that ran for 15 years and that was the one thing I hated. I ended up down to Dewalt and Ego. I decided to purchase the Ego CS1604 as it uses a higher capacity battery than the one tested here and made a difference when comparing. I am sure the Stihl is a great tool as I owned one but cannot justify the price for home owner usage. Would love to see another comparison using the same battery power and blade length. Awesome!

There are other videos on YT where the HF Atlas battery stops on thermal overload while cutting under load. Battery will show 50% charge, but won't function until it cools down. Have no idea if their experiences are typical. Otherwise, the guys in the videos seems to like them. Dunno. I wonder if ProjectFarm experienced any thermal battery issues in his tests thus far...

I feel ya. I have the EGO 16 with the 5Ah battery. It feels heavy when you are up in the tree and cutting sideways. So for casual use, combining with the smaller battery is probably the way to go. Based on this review, I am more certain the EGO is among the best performers. I no longer wish to have the Husqvarna and def will not spend up to 3x for the Stihl. I also suspect the chain sharpness and angles might play a big role in the differences in performance. I sharpen pretty regularly and I must say it really does cut like butter!

Just to back up the comments above me, I work for a landscaping/tree felling company and we heavily evalutated the Ego's and the Echo's we ended up going with Echo because they feel more like a typical gas powered chainsaw and we wanted to keep consistent with our crew. However, pretty much everyone loved the Ego's. Overall our call was very close with the deciding thought being that Egos are better for home use since they also have a nice lineup of other yard equipment but Echo was better for commercial use for their slightly better cutting capability, ruggedness, and durability. In the end though, I don't think anyone should be upset about buying really any battery chainsaw, especially for home owners. They are much easier to maintain, quieter, safer, and all around a better option unless you are looking to be running it all day (even then it might be better) or felling large trees.

I can give you a little info about a couple I've owned. The Worx brand electric mower is super light, but replacement blades are really hard to get (and expensive). The battery also failed entirely after two summers of use. They are not affordable to replace. The Ego brand electric mower is what I've been using the last 3 years. I just fired up the battery after another winter out in the garage and it's still running like a champ. Replacement parts and batteries are also more affordable and easier to get.

@@williamrutter3619 better is going to completely depend. Obviously if you're a professional logger, you're going to want a gas chainsaw. Or if you happen to own a very large farm, or a small forrest, park ranger... Gas is going to be the right choice. For 99% of people who aren't loggers, an electric chainsaw just makes sense. No pulling no priming no maintenance no storing gas no mixing no ear protection. You don't have to carry a running saw up a ladder, and they're easier to use at odd angles for pruning. And if you watch the end of the video he says that echo should be able to cut 32 times through a fairly thick hardwood tree. If you have an extra battery that's 60 cuts. After cutting 60 logs you're going to want to take a hour off anyway. Eat some food, let the batteries recharge. And get back to work. Or use the time efficiently, use an ax to start limbing and splitting. Plus I don't know if you noticed but the cut times for the echo were actually faster than both the stihl. Gas and electric. But even the Ryobi and the ego which are about the same price as the stihl 170 / 171 did a good job too. And they're still going to be a better choice for most people.

@@JC-fj7oo one tree can be quite considerably large, and they do fall, I live on farm, not large one, a tree can take day's to sort out, 7 mins isn't running through logs isn't going to work, these petrol chainsaws start pretty easy it isn't an issue and the clutch and chain brake stops the chain from moving, a responsible owner or tenant of property needs a good chainsaw, being out of battery isn't an option.
@JC-fj7oo
@JC-fj7oo 3 жыл бұрын
@@williamrutter3619 Apparently you can't read, because I did say that people on farms might want a gas saw. And no a tenant should NEVER be using a chainsaw on the property, they should be calling the landlord and the landlord should be doing it or calling a service to do it. The insurance nightmare of a tenant spending hundreds on a saw and potentially causing thousands in damage or harming/killing someone/themselves to save a couple hundred on a tree service... That's retarded. And I do not use that word lightly. For a truck saw to clear a road or do some basic emergency cuts, electric works better. It's easier to store, it always starts. The gas doesn't go bad. No priming or pulling or standing in the cold trying to fuck with it. Slide the battery on, push the trigger. Put the battery on a charger once a year... Good to go. Also important to mention that the 170 and all of the electric are LIGHT duty saws. They are for homeowners and landscapers to quickly cut down and process a couple trees once in a while. Deal with limbs. Basic homeowner tasks. If you have a forest or a farm and need to cut down larger trees regularly, then you will want a bigger and more powerful saw. Expect to pay 4-500 for a pro tool. But for the 99.99% of the world that has never felled a redwood: The electric is fine. Even wranglerstar had a vid about it. He hates anything new, but he said he mostly reaches for his dewalt now. His wife and kid prefer to use the dewalt. And he has a bunch of other high quality chainsaws and manages a small forest. He got 25 cuts with his test. If you use an axe and pruners for limbing, you should be able to fell and buck a 50' tree on a single charge. And again, the vast majority of people are not qualified to cut down a tree that's more than 50' anyway. And with a spare batt they can do 2 of them. After a couple hours you can come back and do 2 more. If you need to fell more than 4 50ft trees in a day, that's NOT light duty. And you can rent a 20" chainsaw for like $50 for the day. But that's also way outside the scope of what almost all homeowners are doing with their saws. Something that is easier and faster for a shorter period of time, but still plenty to get the job done, is going to be better for most people. It you don't happen to be like most people, woohoo, you're special. Good for you.

My concern about these battery operated saws is that you're all missing the big picture. All these electric tools have common flaw. With the saw, obviously one can sharpen or replace the chain, and replace the battery until the design of the saw changes. Other than that, is there any other replacement parts or repairable parts available for it? NO. Same goes with battery powered lawn mowers, leaf blowers, line trimmer (weed whackers), power washers, snow blowers, etc. Just 3 years ago, I purchased a Porter Cable impact driver. I used it to build some shelves in my work shop for driving construction screws. Never used it like and impact wrench for auto repair, that's for and impact wrench to do. Last year I built a new deck. When it came time to start driving screws, I grab the impact driver and the first thing I discovered was it would not hold onto the driver bits anymore. Then, the trigger started to fail. Eventually it just plain died. Can't repair them. Had to purchased a new one, but certainly not the same brand. So with that, goes 2 batteries and the charger. I can live with battery powered tools like drills and drivers, even a cordless circular saw is handy. But when it comes to outdoor power equipment, I want something I can maintain and hold onto for several years. That is NOT going to happen with these battery powered outdoor units. They are throw away and buy new products. Just more landfill junk.

I like your videos so much that you are one of only two people I'm subscribed to, but comparing low end of the range to high end of the range isn't a proper review.

this is one of those things that isn't really realistic you cant really expect him to spend 10 thousand dollars to review saws most of us cant afford or need

The Ego 14" he tested was also the lowest end one. It and the 16" are 6800RPM models, the 18" model is 11,000 RPM. The 18" model is also $350 with a 5Ah battery, while the 14" is $250 with the 2.5Ah battery. $100 gets you twice the battery and around 35-40% more rippems, so a good chain speed boost.

I've really enjoyed these comparisions. I'd like to suggest testing Chainsaw Gloves and/or Pants. Seems like it would be a fun one to watch! And useful to know.

Weight (with battery and chain) would be another good metric for comparison, for those who have issues that prevent using a saw over a given weight for any real duration of time.

In a test of Marketing Department BS cutters, Project Farm is by far the best. Only takes one pass to cut through even the deepest layer of adjectives and asterisks.

I’m happy with my 14” Ego for its use. Up in the tree and saplings, even dropped a couple of 8-10” trees. Plus the batteries are all interchangeable with my Ego blower and string trimmer. Which means I can run the 5 & 4 amp hour batteries. 😊As an aside I’d put my Ego string trimmer up against my former Stihl FS314 (?) model I had years ago.

I knew the Echo would do well. They are good saws. When I worked in logging one of my employers had a great Echo saw. It was a little heavier than the Stihls, but it was smoother and quieter.

Project Farm for the win!! As always dead on flow and comparison information. Maybe he already covered it and I missed it, but would like to see a windshield wiper comparison/review.

Well done! As far as I can see, relevant aspects were tested. Just wonder about one thing: Did You check the chains, eventually sharpen them, to evaluate the machines and not trip on differing chain quality?
