Thank you for performing this and other comparisons. I have used the SLIME sealant for years. Common concerns raised by naysayers are: (1) Corrosion to steel or alloy rims, and (2) potential damage to Tire Pressure Monitoring in-tire sensors. Your comparison gave a very brief test of possible corrosion issues. If you revisit this comparison, I recommend you allow a much longer corrosion test period, perhaps 30 days immersion versus the 1 day immersion of your current comparison. Further, I'd recommend you address the concerns of potential damage to in-tire TPM sensors. Thanks for a job well done Tom

Here's a tip that I learned over the years of working on cars and it works great. At every oil change, add a bottle of your favourite injector cleaner to a full tank of gas, along with half a litre of 2 cycle motor oil. I know it sounds strange, but the oil is designed to burn clean when mixed with gasoline and it lubricates the inside of the fuel pump as well as the injectors and does not show any signs of smoke.

One example I will never forget was a really stupid guy who had a sedan with beautiful, very expensive custom rims and he was far too cheap to purchase the run-flat tires required by his vehicle despite our adamant warnings and his dealer advice. He had himself a brilliant idea in the back of his mind the whole time. He went right home after having the new tires installed and filled all 4 with fix-a-flat. Weeks later he comes back because his check pressure light going off every other day. Turns out the rims were so severely corroded the tires wouldn't keep an airtight seal and the chrome was just destroyed.

I had the green version of Slime (for tubed tyres) cause problems on alloy rims. The Slime latched onto bare metal (scratched by tyre levers) causing a lumpy clag that affected wheel balance. I would not use that grade in tubes or in tubeless as it does affect the metal. PunctureSafe/WellSeal is a tubeless grade. It did exactly what it says on the tin and saved me many times with punctured motorbike rear tyres.

Since I work in a garage, I've seen the aftermath of some of these products. A couple things you didnt see in your testing because it was short-term: Fix-a-flat will actually damage the tire if left in there for more than a couple days. It causes the rubber to break down and "dry rot". I have serviced tires which had that stuff in them for a long time and the tire was destroyed. If fix-a-flat is left in the tire for longer than recommended it dries onto the rim and is really tough to clean off. I do it with a steam cleaner and strong degreaser and even then it is tough to get it off. It can also gunk up TPMS sensors over time. A product that I have had great luck with in offroad tires is Berryman Tire Seal-R. It flows a lot better than Slime, and is even able to seal up sidewall cracks in lawn mower tires caused by "dry rot". I'm a big fan of that product. I think it was even priced lower than Slime. I haven't ever tried any of these products in on-road applications.

Go with the slime for punctures in the tread area of the tire only. It's not gonna stop a bead or valve leak. Just make sure you use the proper ammount for your tire size. Been doing tires for 20yrs. If you put so much in to cover the bead and the valve it makes it extremely costly in product. A new valve is $2 and having someone clean the rim shouldn't be more than $15 at a small shop. And nothing is gonna work for a sidewall hole. It flexes too much.

That's interesting. About 3 and 1/2 years ago, while on a road trip from AZ to Utah, I got a flat from a screw. It was after 9pm, and a rural area. After trying 2 gas stations, the third was actually open, and all they had was Fix-a-flat Truck version. I got 2 cans, and put one in the tire. Now, I had a run flat, but was losing a significant amount of air, and left the screw in, and the fix-a-flat sealed it. I didn't lose any air, driving 70MPH the next 110 miles, and left it over night. No air loss in the morning, so I was able to take it to Discount Tire, where they patched it for free. So, I guess fix-a-flat only works with the screw in.

Jushua: Or it is wildly inconsistent. It is also a corrosion hazard, re the original version. Now that there seem to be other, better, products, I'll sure be using a better product like SLime for a few more bucks. The fact that lots of car makers now supply an emergency repair kit with that vs. a spare tire says something, IMO -- which seems to be confirmed by these tests.

Same here. Often with lawn mower, Quad, Gator its a bead leak, maybe a puncture. Doesn't matter, nothing easier that to put Slime in and problem is fixed. Great video, glad I never wasted money on Fix o Flat.

From my experience these kind of punctures are best repaired with the rubberized string plugs. Remove the nail, jam the string in, twist, remove tool, clip the excess. But you gotta have an air source. Even better if you add extra rubber adhesive to the string. GREAT VIDEO!
@PJBonoVox5 жыл бұрын

Just my own experience but I've had Slime brand 26" tubes on my bikes for years now (extra thick rubber compared to the ones the bikes come with). Gone through many tires on the same tubes in an area prone to thorns. Each new tire, I've noticed a growing number of small green dots in the tube - where the slime has repairs a puncture I didn't even know I had. The only minor down side is that now and then the valve needs cleaning out. Small price to pay for no flats in years.

@@williamaungleyraud You can use Slime in the tubes. It works great and I've never had a valve problem. @databanks5 жыл бұрын
@@pirateradioFPV yeah, primarily for tubes though it's also marketed for tubeless car tires, etc. The only drawback I've ever had with Slime is the need to clean out the valve from time to time as it can clog it up and prevent you from topping up the air. Each puncture lets a little bit of air out before the slime can seal it, meaning every month or so you need to top up. About 3-4 months in and enough of the Slime gunk starts to block the valve. Just a 5 minute job to clean it at home which is a much better alternative to sitting on the side of the road in the rain trying to replace a whole tire. Just my own experience and opinion, obviously.

I don't know about anyone else, but I love having these videos to refer to while I'm shopping for the products in a store. The expression on the salesman's face... :D

I would get rid of the fix a flat, and just use the multi seal and a 12v air compressor. You don't know if the fix a flat will react with any of the ingredients in the multi seal in any way

Yep. Fix a flat sux

Great video! I bought a can of fix a flat and wrote off all of these other products because I assumed they were the same but now I know better! I’m picking up multi seal!

Love your video but, unfortunately it was just a little late. I tried fix-a-flat three days ago and it didn't work at all.

As a current tire tech I can confirm that we do not like seeing these products. But we are glad you are safe

@The TacomaKid absolutely not. tire slime is not a big deal it just creates a mess but once we find the hole we will patch it up if it is safe to fix, so rest assure if you're in a jam and need to use some type of temporary fix then go ahead and get on to your nearest tire shop when available.

Please don't use any repair product seen some really bad things happen with these products, top tyre manufacturers recommend no tyre repairs at all says something don't you think ?
@Demon09-_-5 жыл бұрын
@@HN-gy4lg the thing is these repairs are meant for road side limp to a shop and get it fixed . there are quite a few of these newer cars in recent years that don't even have a spare donut tire
@xS0N1Kx5 жыл бұрын
@@HN-gy4lg that's because if they can get you to buy a new tire when the damage is small then they make money lol. Or they mean don't depend on a repair product for a long time. Mainly used to drive to a shop so they can fix and patch it correctly. Then it would be just as safe as a new one if they fix it the right way.

Multi seal, now called Flat Out, is GREAT. I’ve had a leak in my riding mower for a few years and in a hand dolly for over 15 years. Although it was not punctured, Flat Out stopped the chronic leaks. Thanks for your testing review.

I've said it before and am saying it again. I love your videos. You really help people out by doing these very honest test, and the money you save me by allowing me to know which product works the best.

I have some experience with the green slime stuff in bicycle tires as a preventative, and its pretty amazing. The little particles are not how it functions primarily, its the cellulose 'goop' that you ended up washing through the strainer. In free suspension, the cellulose fibers move over each other with very little friction, but when they pass around sharp corners and into narrow openings, they catch on the edges of the opening, then on each other, and eventually completely fill in the narrow opening. As additional pressure is applied and more material is pushed into the opening, the cellulose fibers get closer together and squeeze all of the lubricating suspension fluid out and grip more tightly to each other, eventually forming what amounts to a wood-pulp plug that is fatter on the inside than it is on the outside, so any further further pressure is just wedging this plug further into the hole creating a tighter seal. I think the granules in the mixture just kind give a little added grip to the cellulose fibers so they stack up more quickly and hold on tighter.

So... bicycle tubeless sealant is basically a mix of diluted wood glue and latex?
