Retired USAF. Used this on F-15 wheel bearings and various components. It stays, does not breakdown, and it's "tackiness" pulls back into assemblies, especially in wheel bearings. Additionally, "cold soaking" aircraft at altitude resulting in -50F to -60F temps and having superior performance from the lubricant, is a must. When you spin bearings from 0 to near 200 mph with weight from 45,000-52,000 lbs, you don't mind spending twice as much for superior grease. Same for vehicles.

What is 'this" ? Cheap Grease or Lucas Red N Tacky
@junkmonkey9859
@junkmonkey9859 Жыл бұрын
@@JohnSmith-ps7wp Red N Tacky? grease. It has a component that causes it to be "pulled" into the areas in contact with each other that interact, instead of being forced out, slung off or otherwise wiped away from the areas needing lubricant. Additionally, it "self churns" or constantly reintegrates, so that the grease works longer, replenishing from the grease that is in the components. Other grease can become "isolated" to a small amount that stays on the part and the greater amount of grease is not utilized, but just sits there "separated" from the components. Hope that helps

There is a bewildering variety of greases. My "all-purpose" grease (when I'm not sure what I need) is a moly-disulfide one (messy, but it seems to work much of the time). Ford, for example, specifies a PTFE grease for driveshaft splines and the stuff used in your household washing machine bearings is made to be very resistant to water infiltration. Grease is by no means, just "grease". If you doubt that, try lubricating your wheel bearings with the pan drippings from your morning bacon and eggs.

I've always purchased the "better" grease whenever I need to buy grease. I'm not sure why, but mostly reading the tube and the specs. The 2 or 3 dollar difference in the price is really insignificant when compared to the longevity of the grease. Grease fittings seem to get forgotten more often than any other form of maintenance in my shop, better grease is cheap insurance against my absent mindedness.

Yes, that would be an interesting comparison. I use both. I seem to like the mobil 1 for my utility trailers, the hubs don't get warm under heavier loads. The Red N Tacky seems to work real good in u-Joints on my tractor pto shaft when mowing for long periods.

But we had about barrel of OEM Honda 5w-20 oil straight from Acura shop, (because the shop foreman is my friend's body and they moved to new shop and everything had to go) and we used for oil changes and we had a few comments that the fuel consumption was better on the Honda oil comparing to Castrol GTX. Then our friends (ex Honda mechanic) Si was filled with Eneos instead of other very popular brand and the same comment. So there might be something more about OEM lubricants and their brew.

I'm going to start sending you invoices for my time, since I spend more of it watching you than doing the work I'm supposed to be doing! I was actually surprised by the significance of the differences between these greases. Your test for tackiness was especially interesting and it makes me wonder how each of them would handle centrifugal force. In many automotive applications centrifugal force would want to send the grease outward in a packed bearing, eventually depriving the inner race of grease if it all has a place to go. The compatibility of grease is no joke, and I'm glad you did mention it. In future grease tests I'd be curious how different grease types hold up in similar tests (say, lithium and silicone and Moly based, etc.) Also, there are instances in automotive repair where grease is intentionally mixed with oil, such as replacing an outer wheel bearing in an axle. The bearing is packed with grease, but the expectation is that the gear oil will make it's way down the axle tube and eventually mix in with the grease and wash it out. I've always been curious if one type of grease or another is best used in this situation. Similarly, transmission and engine assembly often demands a temporary grease be used before trans fluid or engine oil gets through the lubrication passages. It would be interesting to see how a mix of grease and oil fared in some of these tests.
@bertgrau9246
@bertgrau9246 4 жыл бұрын
The special grease used in engine building is by design, intended to mix with oil. It won't hurt the oil, or the metal parts it's in contact with . I've built, and helped build a lot of engines and I used 105, engine grease. It works great. One gentleman put an engine together by himself then called me and said the engine wouldn't build oil pressure. We pulled the engine, he didn't tighten the oil pick up tube and the oil pump was only pulling air. We checked the crank shaft and bearings and they were fine. We did recoat them put the engine back in and presto we had 50 lbs of oil pressure.
@enduringcharm
@enduringcharm 4 жыл бұрын
@@bertgrau9246 Yes, there are special assembly lube for engines, such as Permatex Ultra Slick or the 105 you mention. Back in the day when I was rebuilding transmissions there were uses for grease too, including holding checkballs in place for assembly in valve bodies, or lubricating thrust washers, or bearings, etc. In axles with bearings that will start up dry I've only ever seen manufacturers recommend a high temp grease, without being specific. Some bearings also come with grease installed, even though the bearing might be for multiple applications. Another area where oil and grease can mix is on splined input or output shafts which initially need grease but eventually will have oil mixed in.

I'm an M1 fan also though their red synthetic grease is not what the off white stuff of the past was. The red will separate over time at room temp. I have about a half case collecting dust. Wish I had bought a few cases of the original off white M1 grease back in the day. I still have a partial tube from decades ago and it still has not separated. Stuff smells great as always also. I would like to find a source for the grease Honda used in the rear wheel bearings back in the day. The stuff was indestructible and had a similar feel and smell to the old M1 greese.

I am not a fan of magic oil additives, but I have been using Red N Tacky for years. Real world use has demonstrated that is STAYS in chassis parts - it does not get washed away and allow water intrusion like most chassis grade greases. It also maintains it's lubricating qualities for the entire service interval. It goes in red and purges reddish during re-service. This product lengthens the life of chassis parts exponentially. We have an '86 Grand Marquis we've owned for 17 years, and a few years prior to that, I had another one. I used to repack the bearings around the recommended interval of 30k miles. When I started buying Amsoil grease about 12 years ago, I figured I could run the preload tighter, and go a bit longer on the interval. I was right! Part of owning 3 cars, plus maintaining everyone else's, maintenance intervals get forgotten quite a bit here. One time I went 80k miles on the same grease - absolutely no wear marks on any bearing or race. I get 3x the life out of bearings now, too. It's definitely true with grease - you get what you pay for! Excellent video, Todd! Much appreciated! 👍🍻

@@BingWatcher Thank you!! I'm sure they're on par, or can at least compare closely with Lucas

Lucas is actually what I use on my wheel bearings and joints. Good stuff! I needed this comparison for my brother-in-law.

When I was getting my master degree in mechanical engineering we had some lessons on lubricants. All greases with same soap base can be mixed, regardless of the thickness of the oil inside. With almost all general purpose (wheel bearing) greases being lithium soap based, you really don't have to worry all that much about mixing greases of different brands.

like Sander says, mixing NILG 2 and NILG 2 greases of different brands is not an issue mixing greases with different thickeners (lithium vs PolyUrea) is a no-no the different thickeners or soap bases react with one another and causes the oil to fall out of solution a test of that would be nice I have done this in the shop a couple of times as most of the techs I have worked with did not believe it

Thanks I was looking for a comment like this. I’m going to switch out grease for my cargo trailer but I don’t want to clean out the bearings first. Not that I would have lol.

Please do a test comparing NLGI 2 lithium grease compared to one with a decent amount of Molybdenum content. As always, thanks for all the hard work to make these videos!

Project Farm yessir! A comparison between the Lucas X-Tra Heavy Duty grease and the Mobil XHP 322 Mine would be stellar!

My go-to grease is Valvoline Full Synthetic Moly-Fortified grease. I’d definitely be interested to see a comparison between regular molybdenum fortified grease

I switched everything on my farm to a full synthetic schaffers grease and it’s made a huge difference in the amount of bearings that need to be replaced. Expensive grease is cheaper in the long run than frequent repairs.
