I had a 89 S10 4X4 that had a transmission problem after setting for around 3 weeks it would take a little revving to get the pickup to back out of a parking spot. I used some Lucas "Transmission fix" to keep from having to tear into the transmission. That was back in 2003, the pickup is still going strong with having to work on the transmission. I swear by Lucas. Oh, I gave the pickup to my daughter in 2017.

I had a Lincoln Mark VIII that REQUIRED synthetic transmission fluid. The trans already slipped a little and I had the fluid and filter changed. The shop used conventional trans fluid...out of ignorance I guess. I wasn't going to bitch since it already slipped and I wasn't going to invest in a rebuild since the car wasn't worth the money. I put in a pint (?) of Lucas transmission fluid additive and a month or so later, the transmission didn't slip at all! I drove the car for 5 more years. When I sold it, it still didn't have any transmission problems. Hard to believe, I know but that stuff works! I use Lucas products in all my high mileage vehicles since then...every oil change and the transmission gets Lucas whenever they get low on trans fluid. Great stuff imo.

I'm 74, about 60 years ago my girlfriend s father drove a semi truck, and had his engine oil and trans oil changed he always added 2 cans of STP oil treatment with the new 90w oil for the transmission, they finished his maintenance and he went down the road approximately 500 miles his transmission seized up he was towed to a repair shop as they drained the 90w oil from the transmission. Nothing came out !! It turned out the the oil change shop FORGOT to finish adding the 90w !! The only thing they added was the 2 cans of STP !! They forgot the 90w gear oil. So for 500mile in a semi truck hauling a full load of cars. All it ran on was 2 cans of STP. my friend was hooked On STP from then on !! Great. Video 😃😃😃

I've used Lucus for years. I've bought cars new and put close to 400,000 miles on them and they still didn't burn oil when i got rid of them. It's very good at quieting an engine too especially with cold starts. It eliminates them. I had some oil burners years ago and it would stop the excess oil burning. That's how I got started with it, looking for something that would help.

I've been a small engine mechanic for 20 years and I'm not really sure what this video proves other than if you run an engine without oil it's going to seize up. The fact that one engine blew up before the other could just be coincidence because you only had two test subjects. As with any science experiment there should have been a control group where there would have been an engine with no additives added. It's a cool idea and I appreciate all the hard work you put into this video.
@VentShop7 жыл бұрын
kzbin.info/www/bejne/o2m9fIB5m6aom5Y kinda gives a control. Not sure if he changed the base oil in this one from what he used before. If so it would invalidate a comparison. I do have to agree the sample size is small especially since no two engines will be perfectly identical but if there is a large gap like say twice the time in the test I linked it does say something.

@@ProjectFarm I have a test to report. My friend cococted his own oil additive product trial on my slant 6 Dodge van in the early eighties. We drained all the oil out and ran it on his brand of STP-like emulsion. We drove for a long time and then emptied that stuff and turned the key and it still ran with zero in the crankcase for at least another couple of miles. That sold me on additives and later when I bought a clapped out, sand in the oil car for a few hundred and drove it a hundred miles home I tried Bardahl in it to get me the miles home. It was a Dodge Shadow with a typical 4 cylinder and overheated after starting almost immediately (bcuz oil pump completely wiped out) so adding additive taught me the engine temp did not climb. I emptied all the oil per our trial years before and ran straight Bardahl to the top of the dipstick mark- for an added 2 years before I jumped in one winter morning at zero degrees and forgot to idle her to a warm temp before driving. The engine seized in about ten minutes. I have run (and still do in beaters I buy) straight STP and try to beat the crap out of them to kill them and can't- or can't as long as I warm the engines before driving, that is. In winter the additives are about as viscous as Pooh Bear's favorite honey!

Great video. Very good test. I worked at a municipal garage for 11 years and we kept lucas on hand. Saved quite a few engines and made noises go away. But the best one was we had a crown vic ppv 4.6 engine come in knocking was way over on service had literally half a quart of oil in it. I changed oil put a quart of lucas in it and the 5w30 oil back in. Let it run for 30 minutes knock went away and it was a rod bearing knock. And ran for another year till he got a new unit. So I'm definitely a believer in the stuff. I don't use the trans additive though. I was told by my builder that it's to slick allowing enough friction and causes sticking problems in transmission.
@dubblyewjay11332 жыл бұрын
As you can see on the guy's "Lucas in the lawnmower" post, I'm one of those synthetic additive believers. Even today I'm running a high-miler Villager on straight STP being very careful to idle up to operating temp before driving. Cost? 6 15 oz containers of STP and an STP oil filter.

Project Farm Totally agree. And really if this is going to be the de facto test setup - two to three engines on just the manufacturer recommended oil viscosity as the control group. of course you’ll also want to control for room temperature since these are air cooled. Personally I’d also like to see the break in oil drained off and replaced before the actual test starts because often that has some gnarly stuff in it - and that could easily be different engine to engine. If you really wanna get scientific and take away a little bit of naysayer ammo - it wouldn’t be too hard to put together a couple arduinos to graph out rpm and temperature through the test cycle. Just need a hall sensor, and a thermocouple or two, and an Sd shield to log to. I’m not sure how you set engine speed but doing it this way would correct for an engine that didn’t start at the exact same time as another, and for running speed, because if they start going 20-25 minutes and one is 5-10% different rpm that’s 1-3 minutes of run time, which if you’re gonna do a bunch of these tests you might as well do it right and be ready for close calls. That whole test kit would be like $30-40 an engine tops. Dm me if you want more info or a hand putting those together. Testing wise - These are some that jump to my mind: recommended viscosity vs a heavier weight vs a lighter weight, or even a 5/30 vs straight 30 conventional vs partial vs full synthetic, or if you wanna split hairs maybe a rotella t5 hybrid vs the valvoline and castrol high mileage.. since those are oil + their special additive packages. Zddp additive / the various disulphides..

I agree with you. Test of two products that were both used in a way they were never intended to be used. Poured all the lubricant out so you are testing the absence of two products.
@webgrunt5 жыл бұрын
@Dwain S&w It's a legitimate test. Most engine wear occurs during cold-starting, when all the oil has drained down into the pan, because it takes a little time for the oil pump to circulate the oil. If one of these additives leaves a residue on engine parts after the oil has drained and that residue provides some lubrication, then it is likely to reduce engine wear especially on vehicles that re cold-started frequently. Since one ran 12 minutes without oil and the other ran 21 minutes without oil, one of them does seem a clear winner.

First of all, you are amazing! No frills, no over acting. Just the facts. I am an aircraft mechanic with my degree from Embry Riddle. In our engine builds we have always used STP. One of the things about STP is viscosity adhesion. When you put your fingers in the gloves and dip it in the STP. There are usually 4 to 5 strands of line viscosity between fingers. I predominantly use a Bull nose series Ford F-150 302 blown air ride hydraulic dump truck., Mazda B2200, Datsun Z series and a Skyline, 🥰Lycoming Air , and Suzuki motorcycle equipment. Also I’m a Cat fan and I’m building a cat hybrid backhoe mini. Electric caster chassis and hydraulic bucket. It’s a mini cat so it fits thru a 4 ft fence door. I think a lot of gear heads are gonna love it when I post the finish. Unfortunately I do not build Chubby’s. They are so much more affordable and have so many cool aftermarket parts that make me drool especially MR. Vette . After getting your eyebrows blown off twice tuning the distributor, behind the carb it changes your view. I always lay up all engines, and I do mean a lot of engines, with STP. The squeezy gel feeling when torquing main journals and seeing the STP come out evenly all around is quite pleasing. Now I’m an old schooler an Lucas (in my opinion is the new kid on the block). I haven’t even begin to rate synthetics. I hear they are good though. I’ll probably move to super capacitance electric vehicles before I try to rate synthetics. Back to your test. The new information in the Lucas charts formulas , and tech specs that had to do with the extra run time you got before detonation. Was informative. However, let’s go back a little in the test. Temperature. The STP engine ran cooler before the Big Bang, the coking of the head was less. And even thought Lucas did win in longevity, the test was a destructive test. Now who’s runs with an engine oil light on😁. Now on high rpm Suzuki Gixxer 1000s and any engine over 9000 rpm speeds I build with Motul. This is clear F-1 stuff , and really not applicable to the test you performed. Different breed . The 10k rpm engines, and nitromethane engines , short connecting rods, and extreme side block forces, exceed single cylinder engines. Also crank balance tuning is a major factor. Lot of CAD time. However I will never leave Castrol Motor oil . Just my thing. I started using Castrol on all vehicles in 1978. I’ll build with Motul. For F-1, and 10K engines, But I run Castrol for everything else. I dunk the cleans in a sacrificial electrolysis tank so even though Castrol has a higher varnish value than other oils, I just trust it. For air cooled engines it is peas and carrots. 40 years on one mower Briggs 100psi compression, it’s that good. The Ford tractor, unbelievable. Well that all for now , I’m 3 cars 3 bikes and one hydroplane behind. The shop and the shop supplies are getting hard to keep on schedule, so it’s time to get cooking. Covid has really slowed my inventory replacement down. Thanks for letting me bend your proverbial ear, by text. Kevin Wood A@P 22811**** Linear Dynamics Engineering.

Great test, except for the fact the lubricity test: we have no idea about how rough or smooth that sanding with a grinder does to the rotating sleeve. Using a jig with a piece of sanding paper applying a specific pressure to sand the sleeve down for a given amount of time should give a uniform surface after each wear test. However testing the bearing twice does remove some of that variation and the engine running test does confirm what was seen in the lubricity test. So very good test, very valuable. Kudos!

the lucas seems to run hotter but it is likely just more efficient and taking the internal heat and transferring it to the head/block. I think i recall and engine without oil or water vs oil and it looked cooler on the outside but obviously internal parts were much hotter leading to failure first. One of oils main purposes is dissapate heat. So the hotter engine may actually be working better. Kinda counter intuitive.

I don't know if it was ever sold in the US but in Britain we had an oil additive called Molyslip - named I suppose because it contained suspended molybdenum disulphide powder (I think it was 2000 grit.) Dunno if it really worked but the idea behind it seemed pretty sound as MoS2 has some pretty remarkable properties in the powder form. I worked at a factory where it was manufactured and ground to a powder - a teaspoonful spilt would flow to cover the entire floor of the place - which was quite hazardous as it was impossible to walk on the stuff without sliding.

As you said,MoS2 'In suspension'. It gives sump a real good coating and is removed almost instantly with a centrifugal filter. A 'conventional' pleated paper filter allows it to 'float around' a bit longer. As an assembly lube I found it awesome and mixed with some Hypoid 90 was a fantastic chain lube (for off road/Enduro) With a 'total loss' 1/2 liter bottle I got almost an entire year on chain and sprockets my 400 Yamaha instead of maybe 2 events without oil 'system' (although at longer events needed filling every other pit stop)

I found some of that at an auto part store in Canada, once. I liked the idea of it. When you think about how most of it should get caught in a decent filter, why hasn't one of the companies developed a temporary filter that can be run to allow these types of products to setup in the engine.?

MoS2 Molybdenum Disulfide is EP grease for gears, probably not suitable for engine

Granted this is nearly five years old, but I'd love to see the same test done with Marvel Mystery Oil and Slick50 as well to see how they fare.

Marvel Mystery Oil is more of a top end lube, keeps the valves from sticking, etc. Not the same thing as these additives.
@NordicDan2 жыл бұрын
@@stewartmarshall4112 True. My suggestion was more for curiosity's sake for a different video. I use MMO in every oil change and my valves have always been nice and quite when using it. Slick50 was something we were paid to hock when I briefly worked at Jiffy Lube as a teenager and I always considered it snake oil used to dupe the people who didn't have much knowledge about cars and were making the mistake of trusting Jiffy Lube.

Do a two stroke oil comparison: traditional petroleum based vs castor bean based vs synthetic.

thank you for the great videos! I have always run castor bean oil mixed at 32 to 1 in my ATV but I have wondered about the synthetics such as Amsoil Dominator that say to run them at 50 to 1 or even 100 to 1. would be interesting to see an honest side by side comparison.

Oh, I really like how you brought in a second person wins starting both engines , Making it perfectly fair with both engines being started at exactly the same time! I really appreiate all the effort you make to present the testing of products completely fair!

I stumbled across your video using Sea Foam in the Ford Ranger motor and your results mirror my experience using Sea Foam. I have been able to get a lot of seized up small engines broken loose and running normally using both Sea Foam and Marvel Mystery Oil alone and together just to see how long an engine will continue to run relatively quiet and as close to normal as possible. I have been watching your other videos and enjoy your straight forward approach to each of your product challenges. Keep up the great work and thanks for taking the time to better educate others on product performances.

What will happen if you fill up the crankcase with olive oil or sunflower oil or maybe just water. I am a new subscriber, i watched all your videos and they are amazing. Keep up these awesome videos mate, Cheers from Greece.

I bet it would work. Maceyofgrandbend ran old vegetable oil in a car for a while. I think 2 different cars actually. Look it up.

It would eventually polymerise in the crankcase and set solid once the engine shuts off and cools down

ProBlend is reported full of certain chlorine compound additives that over time combine with moisture to form various chlorine acids (like hypochlorous and hydrochloric) and those will eat up your bearings over time! That's why manufacturers don't use chlorine compounds in their oils. However, it is known that chlorine compounds do offer very high anti-scuff properties. @Mark Ayash

flashmcginty Really? People like you amaze me. The Lucas engine ran almost twice as long as the STP engine but "you cant really tell..." Do most people actually take you serious? SMH...
@LR-my2di6 жыл бұрын
Lucas also recommends twice the volume of their additive. Maybe that's fine for an engine with no oil in the crankcase , but for long term reliability in an engine with a crankcase full of oil, does this "test" really prove anything relevant? @@murffyslaw001

Hello. I have been watching your channel for many years. I just wanted to say how much you are appreciated. It is evident that you have a good heart as a person and you put that into what you do. Your tests are done exactly as they should be in my opinion. It's layed back and comfortable and fun but balanced w a lot of science and intellect. I have a degree in Auto Technology and I have a small engine repair Ministry/business. I'm a mad scientist that thinks about these kind of tests myself, so I really enjoy these. Thank you for what you do and the person that you are. As far as suggestions, I have a few that I'm wondering about when you did the 2 stroke oil (supertech VS amsoil) I was thinking about how well synthetic supertech would do, not the conventional. Because I've had several instances where a rich oil mixture of conventional would run my engines (because of the borderline Flashpoint issues). Also, the 'red and tacky' grease compared to Walmart general grease. I would have liked to see their 'red-high-temp' compared to 'red and tacky'. Also, the zddp thing really needs some tests done by someone. More specifically... The Lucas zddp additive (hot rod) that supposably creates a 5000 ppm when mixed w 4.5 parts oil. I just want to see how much of a less wear scar it produces w extreme pressure. Also, does it make oil more acidic over time. The last one would b the difference between Lucas high mileage stabilizer (conventional) VS Lucas regular stabilizer (conventional). I'm not sure if the high mileage actually has zddp in it. And also you could text the Lucas synthetic compared to those other 2. It's much thinner so it would be interesting. Again, thank you so much... Have a great day!
