Great video. I need to use short call spread instead of just shorting calls. Shorting calls results in unpredictable margin requirements. I'm holding short $GME calls, margin requirements volatility is crazy, I have barely survived the last bull run-:)
@projectfinance
@projectfinance 4 ай бұрын
I would agree! Shorting calls is super risky ESPECIALLY on a stock like GME that has these rips higher. And when the meme stonks rip higher the IV / option premiums explode, so you’re losing on the directional move and IV expansion. A short call spread will help minimize both sources of losses. The downside is the call spreads will be cheap on a stock like GME, giving you less reward for your risk.

Great video! This is a question really. I have seen quite a bit of variability in the value of some of my bull call and Bear Put Spreads. It seems that if the trade is going in your direction the maximum profit potential is achieved much closer to the option expiry date. Is that the case? I ask because I had a trade with an ATM call bought with an OTM call sold (140/150) and when the stock rose by early in the trade my initial profitability was showing much less than the straight math would have suggested. It appeared to be because of very wide bid/ask prices on the call I sold.
@projectfinance
@projectfinance 9 ай бұрын
Hi John! Great question. The answer is yes you need to either see your call spread fully ITM at expiration / little time left, or have the spread get DEEP ITM before expiration. The more time left, the deeper ITM the spread needs to get to hit max value. I would suggest going and looking at spreads on AAPL or any stock and compare the spreads vs time to expiration. So create the same spread and look at their prices in two different expirations (like the aapl 170/180 call spread in April and then June). Then look at the same width spreads at different strike prices in the same expiration (like the spy 490/500 vs the 520/530 in April). Compare their prices and you will learn a lot about spread pricing. In short: a spread can only reach max value when the options in it have little extrinsic value. This means they are either soon expiring, or are deep ITM.

Everything you are doing is a 1:1 ratio.. What if you bought 2 call options and shorted 1. Would the profit be double? Like for the first example, the profit was 15 but if you bought 2 call options, wouldn’t that be double”30” So when you hit your price point, let’s say 80% then sell one off and let the other ride to see what happens. Would that work?

@projectoption As you mentioned, I can close a position at any time to minimize loss or take profit. But when it comes to spreads is it possible to close each leg of the spread separately? For example, I want to take profit of my Call option leg of the call spread but don't want to close the OTM short call option as it has time to decay further, thus allowing for more profit. Is this possible or common to do? Thanks!

thanks for the very helpful video. i understand risk of assignment is pretty scary and likely. therefore to mitigate the risk, the trader should monitor the price movement and set rules of when to take profit and when to accept lost. Perhaps you could do a video on your rules for profit taking/loss making and how you monitor trades as time goes by, thereby avoiding the risk of assignment. Thanks again :)

No because the call you buy limits the risk of the call you sell. Since a call purchase represents the ability to buy stock at a strike, it limits The loss potential on the trade. If you sold a call all by itself without +100 shares OR a long call then the trade would have unlimited loss potential

If every trader want to get rid of options before expiration to avoid dealing with assignment, won’t the prices go down due to low demand? Who buys contracts just before expiration?

This is an excellent presentation but unless you are a genius, it is not intuitive. I was able to understand it by creating excel spreadsheets of each of these vertical spreads and then watching how the values of each option changes with various stock prices. For example, I created a spread sheet where I could see the how the values of the long put and the short put change with a given stock price and then add them together. Don't forget to subtract the long put option price. You can then plug in different numbers and see how the profits/losses change. When I did this, I understood it.

Great information! One question I always have is how to compare wider spreads and less contracts vs narrower spreads and more contracts. For example, if I want my max loss to be less than $1000, then how do I decide between two $5 wide spread vs one $10 wide spread? I know options are all about trade-off but I don't have a clear view now about the trade-off between these two choices.

The information this guy gives is priceless. Way better than those expensive "gurus" courses online. No hypes and false promises. Just facts and reality.

This is the baddest dude on the net! I have been studying the classic text "Options as a Strategic Investment" by Lawrence Mcmillan for a few months and it's definitely a great book to have if you wanna dig deep into options, and I definitely don't regret the time I've spent studying, but the book is over 900 pages. I swear to you, between this "Vertical Spread" video and the "Options Trading for Beginners" video I could have saved myself 3 months of studying every day and the first 300 - 400 pages of the book by watching these 2 videos totalling a little under 5 hours!!! You da man Chris!!!!!

Love your videos man, you make it way easier for morons like me 😂. I’ve learned more off your videos than I did from a complete stocks and options course that was offered to me from a trading group I used to be with. It was informative but not mind blowing like your videos. Thanks brother I really appreciate it. I will definitely use your link once I open up an account with tasty 👅

Thanks cris , my question is what should I do if the stock goes againest me .... I sold 10 contracts 115/110 vertical put spread for AAPL expires Oct .16 , AAPL was $ 125 when I entered the position , now it is 107. The same with FB, I sold 10 contracts 275/ 270 credit put spread ( FB was $ 303 when I entered the position ) , Now FB arround $ 252. Shall I exit my positions & lose arrond $3500 ( % 20 of my account ) Or shall I take a chance and wait till expiry ( I have 4 more weeks& may be the stock will go up ) . If the stocks didn't go up , I 'll be facing the maximum loss ( in the money ) ...

Mazen Zrek Interesting this is a great question I would like to know the same but I think once you pass the break even point you are ITM so therefore waiting it out might be the best solution to return to profit .

@projectoption 10:05 I believe there is a correction. Max loss should be $776 and Max profit should be $724 . You say max loss $0 and max profit $1500 on the chart. Am I mistaken? I am new to options.

Great Vid, and lots of info. I actually slowed the playback so I could keep up. At the Strategy section you talk about choosing Stikes at ATM and/or OTM, yet on the first Bull Call Spread demo you chose ITM and OTM. That really confused me. Am I missing something?

How do you determine what the spread should be? Is it based on the risk/loss you are willing to take?
@andylaque
@andylaque 4 жыл бұрын
After you understand the win loss probabilities of the particular spread in mind, and the implications it has on profitability over many trades, then go and learn about position sizing and capital efficiency and return on capital. Then you will be able to answer that question yourself. Good luck on your researching and learning.

Thank you for this video, I have a question, Do we initiate the second trade when the first trade goes wrong ? The reason I am asking this is, If I bought a put and it starts making money instantly ( Do I still need to do this or when I see a reversal happening )
