"I desperately wish to be included in the city's night." I love this line, but noticed it could be taken in two ways. One, wanting to be a star of the city, not by distortion classification, but as someone who shines brightly above all. Someone with influence to change the city for the better. However, the city's true nights are full of bloodshed, and by the morning, they're forgotten as sweepers eat and sweep the remains of the night. One one hand, it's a wish to have power and be a catalyst for change, while on the other, it's the person's death wish.

No, I think it's the complete opposite. The previous verse points out that the "neon stars" are "reflection of murky gutter sky", so the singer wants to be included in the city's night, escaping from those stars. In the game context, the City's Stars are the freest beings because they are extremely strong and other people have to spin around them. This makes the road to the Star and everything around the Star full of bloodshed. So Yan, the singer, is the one in the night helping the one being oppressed by the City's Star, only to get distorted later. Furthermore, if you acquire Yan's book, he tells that because of the Index, he just wants to suicide to join his dead family. But then, the Index suddenly stops him and let him join as the Messenger instead. That's why he makes a small rebellion in the game.

I love this song. Between its Cyberpunk feeling to the lyrics which describe Yan's futile attempt to ascend in the system to change it, only to realize in the end he was the one being played from the start. These lyrics man, they are on point. Not only do parts read like prescripts, it also shows Yan’s view on the impossible prescripts that only get people killed. But if you really listen the song shows how Yan’s views have descended into the Distortion we fight. “Don’t ask me why, but I desperately wish to be included in the City’s Night.” Before, if he could’ve been a Star of the City then maybe, just maybe the freedom he get’s would allow Yan to make change, to fix the City from the inside as a part of the City’s Night. However this can also be taken as Nighttime in the Backstreets, a death wish as Yan has lost all hope since realizing “Everything he chose was by proxy.” “I desperately wish it be noticed by the City’s eyes.” Once again, a want for change, to have his voice be noticed and have an effect. But taken literally, being noticed by the City’s Eyes means being seen by the Beholders, and destroyed by the Head, once again a death wish. Aspiration turned into hopelessness. A want for change turned into a want for death.

It's still kinda different. If Angela would deviate from the script, her stage would reset again and again, until she performs her role flawlessly. When Yan deviated, his stage just went on as if nothing happened. Angela at least could see the result of her deviations, even if it's the same for a million years.

Think about that number. 400000 people who had families, friends and loved ones. Those are all going to want revenge for their lost ones against Angela, not to mention most were Nest dwellers, so now she also has to evade the Nests' rage, and that's not mentioning Argalia and his ensemble, the Head... All and all, she's built such a large coalition against her, that even if she obtains her freedom, ironically, it may be better for her to never leave the Library because she'll be lynched by half of the City. In her quest for freedom, she has become public enemy number one, and that never turns out well for whoever holds that title... Besides, I do think she has showed some sympathies, but only for those with similar trauma (LoveTown, for instance), however, the more she goes on, the more greedy and less fazed she becomes, only caring to ask about how EGO and distortions work or to state that she's different from Yan or to comment on Prescripts. She's becoming more and more desensitized, and I think that's not going to go very well for her...

The real person killing other people is Ayin aka the Library or the person across the monitor. We baited Phillip into the 8 O Clock Circus so he Distorts and used him to lure out the hapless association and decimated them all. We granted the invitations to Argalia and the Reverb Ensemble and they believed that they were using us. We intoxicated the Prescripts to enlighten people with a whiplash of absolute death, by baiting the Index Elites into the Library and getting them killed. We made Angela the cold and calculating person she is now, and we killed people ever since the day Enoch died. We are going to wake the people up and recover the 3 days stolen away from us. Therefore we became the ultimate cosmic horror of the City itself, using nothing but a pair of hands and a group of skillful and loyal warriors under our disposal.

Outside of the game's angle of this song, you could consider this a song about not being able to cope with failure and falling into a spiral of depression. Staying comfortable with the person you used to see as worthless through the desire to persist and live for the sake of it, hurting/disappointing those close to you, "setting yourself free" only to realize everything you did was for someone else up to that point, so you have no real desire of your own, the mundanity of life and the repetition that comes with it, the expectations of marriage and having a stable life, realizing you're suffering and trapped in this cycle because of your own actions but unable to stop it, and the whole angle of how children see only the neon stars, while the sky is murky but you still want to be a part of it, instead of being stuck trapped in your worthless situation. And reading the irrational number stopping you from ever "reaching" home and find peace for yourself, since you've lost your way already.

By the time I got to Yan today I honestly felt like my eyes had fully glazed over, doing several gimmicky abnormalities, reading and watching build guides to tackle them, farming for pages to get in attempts I could feel my mind slowly slipping into a blank state as I finally overcame the anxiety of undertaking his fight. I think that this song, because of the state I was in going into this fight (being so frayed thin by the trials of this game and long days that feel like they drag on and on as I find less of myself to be reflected in the mirror) struck such an absolute chord with me. Yan is wildly alone in this world, he is the bringer of misfortune and death- even if only as a messenger that doesn't have any real bearing in the prescripts he delivers, is stranded and alone in this world. In the blink of an eye he has become that of a messenger of the Index, his power is relative to that of a Star, but in truth he was no more than a man in the eyes of the city. Straddled between the desire to shatter his own shackles and prove that he has his own will, some semblance of self in a city that grinds the individual into dust- no more than a semi-autonomous cog in the ever unknowable machine of this wish granting city, and the ever crushing reality that he, much like everyone else in the city, is nothing. Merely an individual part within the machine of the city, that which reflects the wills and desire of the individual back onto themselves. His breakdown into a distortion of the city, as he is unable to withstand the burden of trying to fight against the overwhelming nature of the city, he's distorted and acquires his "true" form. A machine that enacts the cities will, at least what he believes the cities will, and his own will to be. Free-will? Desire? None of that matters. His future is cast aside for the immediate future, to receive orders from a force incomprehensible by him and carry them out blindly. His story is very clearly meant to analog that of Angela's, someone who is actively and despite the nature of her own existence, the job she was given, and even the will of the city, trying to assert herself as a legitimate being worthy of existing, acquiring her humanity and sense of free will. Yan is the side of the coin that has conceded, one who is unable to continue fighting with the stress of living and choosing for the self even when it seems like all of those choices are the machinations of an impossible machine, whereas Angela (while constantly having her desires to be a true human challenged, and even causing her reflect on the choices she's had to make, truly questioning the worth of herself and why she wants to be a human, if everything she's done, all the death and pain she's inadvertently and directly responsible for is even worth it) continues to progress despite the near constant blows she must undertake in order to acquire her dream, to face all the consequences of her actions directly and accept the blows that come with them. I relate too personally to Yan's story, and even his conclusion. The easy route is to accept it, to give in to the nature of the world, lower ones head and trudge through life until it ultimate crushes you within it's gnashing teeth; instead of choosing for your self what you seek and desire, to be told who you are, and the life you should live instead. To adhere to the heart of the world, bow your head to it's cruelty and enact that cruelty with the false supposition that because we as people don't really have our own wills, and that because reality is cruel there's no reason to consider what he's doing is wrong, because if one does- then they must accept that they themselves are cruel, and have committed unforgivable and damming actions against other innocent individuals; or frankly even consider the fact that we've done anything wrong. I think Yan, as a character, instantly became so memorable, tragic, and wonderful because of this track and the culmination of his story in a single fell swoop. Ruinas music has always been phenomenal and very enjoyable, but much of it (to me) has always fallen into the background of the fights or moments while I focused more intently on the story or stressing over the gameplay; but Children of the City jettisoned me from this state and I just sat there, listening. Yan desires to be a star of the city, to become a person who can enact their own will, but he doesn't. Instead he falls to cruel machinations, and becomes a monstrous amalgam of his notions of the star, to his desires of the city. I adore this track for so many reasons, especially because it's just infectious, but more so because of what it represents. Frankly, that can be extrapolated to every character that enters into the library, especially the rats who we encounter at the very beginning of the game. One may wish to be included in the cities night, but to do so one must acknowledge what the city truly is, who the self truly is, and what the desires the city reflects back onto the self truly are. I feel like I could keep writing and writing about this song in particular, but I'd rather just keep listening to it at this point as Yan's tragedy, and every one that fate cascades into the library, listlessly plays through my mind.

They were planned by the prescripts, as his coworkers were given prescripts telling them that the new messenger Yan will deliver forged prescripts but to follow them anyway, and when Yan reads a prescript fresh from the printer it adds on to one of the ones Yan wrote. “Go to any intersection and wave three times.” “Go to any intersection and look for a person waving. Follow them home.”

You might think it's easy if you just told everyone that's your prescript, but there could be another person whose prescript is to fulminate against you (or get someone to fulminate against you) I was also thinking about things regarding the prescripts if The City is (almost?) omniscient, then why would it hand out prescripts to people it knows will end up failing? Especially for the painter who misunderstood the prescript he was given I think The City intentionally did that because it was letting Yan witness the executions in preparation for his breakdown at the end

Yan's story makes me honestly wonder if the city itself is a distortion. Yan, as it's revealed, was handing out prescripts that he made himself, being just as gruesome and tame as regular prescripts. It's then revealed that the Proxies were given instructions to follow all of Yan's fake prescripts, as if the creator of the prescripts (the city itself) knew what Yan was doing the whole time. When Yan finally sees the creation of a prescript, it's to follow a person home who is seen waving at them. If you remember, one of Yan's fake prescripts that he gave out was for a man to be that waving person. Not only did the mind of the city know that Yan made fake prescripts, but it's also creating prescripts off of those fake prescripts. By all means, this must show some sentience within the city as an entity. I know that the weaver at the wheels said it's the will of the city, but what does that truly mean? Just how sentient is the city?

@@oggerts7121 Well, consider this. The reverb ensemble returned completely distorted and continued to fight, this time to the death rather than being turned into a book. If everyone who had been turned into a book was coming back, and had enough time to fight, then distorted Yan would have most likely began fighting again, as they had "no free will of their own". On the other hand, If Yan had been returned to the city, still distorted because that's irreversible. If this is the case, and Yan is still compliant with the Index, then perhaps they would make Yan more of a major proxy, now strictly enforcing the prescripts.

By making Proxies be converted into book they were saved from being beaten by Reverberation Ensemble and dying forever. Instead they were booked waiting to be released in the end. Because The City predicted it. In the end Index got Yan as the loyal distortion and Proxies and Proselytes all alive. And we do not know what City's Will exactly. Is this a combined consciousness of all residents of the city? Is this a god which became real because people wanted to find a meaning in their lives? Or perhaps Moirai just doesn't know the answer and in reality Prescripts are made by some kind of machine which is able to predict actions of every person?

The city isn't a distortion because it's not a person, and it has existed for much longer than the Library and thus the Distortion phenomenon which is to begin with caused by the ending of Lobotomy Corporation. Perhaps most terrifying is that the Prescripts come from the people’s will. I think it is based off the wish of all this random suffering being for some reason. That their deaths were not in vain. That their life had some meaning before it was cut short by cruel fate. But that wish coalesces into a mockery. That yes, there is a reason, but it’s foolish to even try to comprehend. That you do have meaning, but as a nameless cog who is to be disposed of once it fulfills its duty. That nothing you do is truly your own. This horrid city takes the hopes of the people, their wishes, their wants, their desires, and twists them into unending nightmares. Distorting is even a continuation of this. They’re the people who fully embrace the violent insanity that is the City. This is cosmic horror. Not tentacles, not ancient gods, but that certainly does help. It’s that you are nothing in this vast cosmos, and that your life can be ended with ease. But there may be hope, because even these old gods are insignificant. Perhaps they can be killed. But then when will the next set come along to damn us? The library is taking down the most powerful people of the City, dismantling the wretched hive, but is taking in all manner of innocents as well. Not even the Librarians are truly in charge of the damn thing.

When protagonist immunity and immortality is taken to extremes, the true cosmic horror isn't the Head. It isn't the Will of the City, who was hijacked by the true horror. It isn't the Abnormalities. It isn't the Fingers and Wings. It is literally the person across the computer out of the City's reality, commanding their Librarians to farm their guests for books.

@@pootissandvichhere9135 Carmen has became some sort of omnipresent, distorting force and Ayin has became the Light itself, which also exists in a broken form in the City because of Angela's interruptions. Binah even said that "Ayin is watching over us", which means that the one controlling the Library itself is him. In other words, they are now omnipresent, omniscient walking disasters.

I was thinking the same thing. The index is one of the best and most interestingly written cosmic horrors I've ever seen. I think what really does it for me is that it's not necessarily an incomprehansable "being", but this mechanism that somehow just works.

@@ony806 My personal favourite part that renders this a bit more scary is that this method of writing Prescripts, if it was not made maliciously, was just a bout of madness; it utilizes each and every beat of the City, as it says, but instead of creating a sort of coherent wish of the populace, it's just an amalgamation that eventually transforms into the terrible things we see. See, a populace must have it's bad apples; it's how humanity works, and greed is inevitable in any human, so the Prescripts were doomed to fail since their conception, because the o ly way they wouldn't create evil is in a Utopian society with no sense of evil, which is impossible. This simply means that the Prescripts were either designed with a greater goal in mind(regulating people's lives, for example) before it was twisted, or their creator did not have enough foresight to figure out how terrible they'd become. So if it was malicious, it's scary I that whoever designed it manages to make anyone who figures out the truth go mad, believing that the City has no good in it if this is its will (Instead of factoring that the bad people's wishes impact the overall outcome) or if it was it malicious, it is scary in that the lack of foresight caused what is probably one of the most mind breaking, terrible creations of the City.

The thing I love about these boss themes is the feeling that the vocals give is related to how the character for the theme is: Tommerry - conflicted and upset about relationship and wanting to forget what happened Xiao - determination, doing it for him, her hope sparks fire Now this, it sounds so hollow and empty, thinking you fought to find your free will but there was never one to begin with. That's what it's telling for Yan. The very few verses were Prescripts.

@@Paradaimu imo i think its not just about Angela, each verse seems more like a conversation. It's shared thoughts for both Roland and Angela, in a few verses like the 5th verse, "sure I'll be your marionette" is similar to Roland agreeing with Angela that he can be her assistant. In the final "What's the colour of the electric sheep you see? And if you love me, can you love your everything too, for me?" is directed to Angela, because Angela is developing a close relationship with Roland and growing to like him more throughout and has considered his words more. (if you noticed she doesnt seem to act way too cold compared to before).
