I do agree that China is pushing students way too far in terms of education. I often hear about how Chinese students receive the most amount of homework out of any country, but I didn’t think it was this bad. Singapore is also known for being one of the best in academics, and as a Singaporean, we definitely have a lot of pressure placed on us, but UNIFORMS WITH CHIPS AND CCTVs? That is too far. Give these kids a break. There is no point forcing them to become the best if they can’t even take a rest. They are humans, not academic machines. Cut them some slack.

Though I know that stress isn't good, their situation a lot better to the types of schools shown in this video (coming from a priviliged asshole who can't even speak chinese at a high level). As a student who used to study in local schools in Hong Kong, I can confirm that they rely on memorization and not critical thinking. And honestly this is the reason I switched to an International School. The amount of stress was just unbearable, imagine having to arrive to school at 7:55am, going to bed at midnight due to studies and tutorials, having 6 chapters of Math in an Exam, Chinese Literature (ancient language) that is useless nowadays, needing to know what the author wants to tell us (I often end up questioning people how will teachers know the answer when they're not the author), students not knowing why they have to study those, teachers that can't even mark exams or unit test papers correctly, Physics formulas that you have to memorize without knowing how do people come up with that. (Just my experience in a local school) And if you ask me who to blame, it's the teachers and the Education department. If the teachers want their students to concentrate in class, then just make the lesson interesting, keep the students engaged. And don't get me started on the Education department, it has so many problems with it. One of them is the HKDSE (Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education) examination, you literally have to memorize 12 Chinese passages and answer questions for Chinese, that often leaves me and my friends wondering "Why do they have to determine our jobs or Universities based on 12 useless Chinese passages?" Like if you want to be a doctor, what does it have to do with what you learn in Chinese, English and Math? And why not grade us based on our dream jobs? Not to mention that the local Chinese students are literally suffering because the Chinese in Hong Kong was just too hard, and yet, the Education department didn't even reflect on it

As a formal Hong Kong student who moved to sydney, I can relate to this. However, note that all the education systems (except Finland) also have the problems that you pointed out, but it's just that Hong Kong is worse. Schools never prepare us for the future, and 90% of the knowledge they teach is useless or you would never use it in real life. Unlike Western countries, Hong Kong doesn't even use a laptop for school, so we wouldn't know the basic ICT skills like Word, Powerpoint, etc. They are also too exam oriented. We only have exams and there isn't any assignment which counts towards our grades. For example, we never learn how to write a scientific report for science, which is an essential aspect of science. We only do exams for every subject. However, a good thing about Hong Kong is that they teach better maths. Not only the maths are better than Western countries, but the textbooks and the way of teaching it is more clear and more logical. The maths textbook in sydney is much worse than Hong Kong. They give you questions that you haven't learned throughout the textbook. But still, Hong Kong is too stressed, and I also hope that the Education Bureau would do something to fix the system. It's so flawed that even the heads of the Education Bureau put their kids into international schools while trying to persuade parents to put their kids into local schools and embrace the flawed local education system to the parents.

Same i am studying at hong kong now and i can assure that there are stacks of homework and school time averaging 8 hours a day, and i am not even counting after school activities and revision for exams. As you pointed out, i seriously do not understand why we need to memorize and study useless stuff that we probably will never use ever again. It's just for university. Even funnier, is that those stuff are HKDSE curriculum. The Education department is definitely the one to blame. Even my parents told me memorizing is the key to success in exams. Now you see how ridiculous the education system is. And unfortunately for me, i was unable to study at a international school because my parents thought that the avaliable ones have too low banding. And yeah i agree that the chinese taught here in hong kong is honestly too difficult and those chinese ancient language should be thrown in trash bin. *exhaustion*

I think it's kind of the same with the Viet education system, of course not to extreme measures like these, but from what I've experienced, these things you said relate a lot to me. They force you to memorize a shit ton of stuff, repress opinions, put under constant stress of being a "flawless student", yadayadayada,... Same with how @VEN.3x3 phrased it, arriving to school at 7:45, going to bed at midnight due to studies and tutorials, memorizing 6 chapters for an exam, except Viet students just learn normal-ass literature thats not going to be relevant in normal day-today lives, same with those teachers, they "supposedly" know the answer when they're not even the author. Students not knowing why they have to study those, teachers that can't even mark exams or unit test papers correctly, Physics formulas that you have to memorize without knowing how do people come up with that. Also from my personal experience, the "teachers" are very unreasonable and usually abuse their power against us to blame the students for literally the smallest things ever, we don't admit it, immediate "Bản kiểm điểm" for us. Plus they're allowed to hit students, mostly on the wrists or hand, and they hurt like hell.

And there were tests almost every day as the curriculum moved very fast. Chinese education is much more than that, and it pains me to say that last week three students in my area ended their lives because of the long periods of time without weekends and breaks, and I'm glad that I'm now experiencing an international education, otherwise I wouldn't be able to imagine my life.

▪︎▪︎▪︎When I entered high school, the requirements at Chinese schools became stricter. In the third year of high school, we had to wake up at 5:30 AM, spend half an hour getting ready, and arrive at school before 6:00 AM to start the day. At 6:10 AM, we began morning recitation classes (both English and Chinese) until classes officially started at 8:00 AM. We had classes until 11:45 AM, followed by a 30-minute lunch break. At 12:15 PM, we started the midday recitation session, and then at 12:30 PM, we had a 45-minute nap. Classes resumed at 1:30 PM and continued until 6:30 PM. After another 30-minute dinner break, we had self-study sessions starting at 7:00 PM and lasting until around 10:00 PM, during which we completed the assignments given by our teachers. It was common not to finish all the homework during this time, so we would continue working on it at home until midnight. After showering and brushing our teeth, we would go to bed, typically getting about five and a half hours of sleep each night. ▪︎▪︎▪︎In high school, winter and summer vacations usually lasted one to two months. However, most schools reduced these vacations to one week. Even during that week, teachers would assign a lot of practice papers. High school teachers in China are incredibly dedicated. Although they could take time off during these vacations, many teachers continued to tutor students without any extra pay because they understood that their efforts could shape the students' futures in a highly competitive educational environment. ▪︎▪︎▪︎Regarding regular holidays, my high school had a half-day off every two weeks, and after this half-day break, we had to return to school at 6:00 PM for exams. ▪︎▪︎▪︎Generally, the more underdeveloped an area is, the higher the demands placed on students. I was in a big city in a developed region of China. Some schools implemented military-style management, with some allowing students to go home only once a month or even once a semester. These military-style schools are among the best high schools in China, and only the most outstanding students can attend them. Graduates from these schools often go on to attend top universities in China. ▪︎▪︎▪︎There is a common value in Chinese society that a person should excel in whatever role they have in society. For example, students are expected to focus solely on studying, and teachers are expected to educate their students well. This can be seen as both the minimum and maximum requirement society places on individuals. ▪︎▪︎▪︎Competition in Chinese education is becoming increasingly intense. With 10 million college graduates each year, the job market competition is fierce. Parents place great importance on their children's education because if a student performs poorly in the college entrance exam, it could have lifelong consequences. For children in less developed regions, education is often their only way out. ▪︎▪︎▪︎You can imagine a situation where even a waiter in a restaurant or a security guard in a community is required to have a college degree. In such a social environment, it's impossible not to take education seriously. ▪︎▪︎▪︎I am very pleased that through my studies, I was able to get into a good university, which means I can potentially become an embedded systems engineer in the future. In this regard, I consider myself lucky. ▪︎▪︎▪︎Although the students work very hard and the competition is fierce, education in China is fair. Unless you come from a wealthy family that doesn't need to work hard, everyone starts on the same level playing field. Only through hard work can you achieve success. ▪︎▪︎▪︎The competition in education is intense because the financial cost of studying is low. Tuition fees at all Chinese universities are generally around $700 per year, and high school fees are around $200 per year. Moreover, student loans have no interest, which means that after finding a job, the loans can be repaid within a few months. The low cost of education has led to fierce competition.

As an Asian myself, I can definitely understand the feelings and pressure these children are going through. My parents are, at some points, become really strict and they only let me play 30 minutes on Sunday, and how is 30 min enough??? What can I do in 30 min? Apart from parents, school work and the pressure of being a “people pleaser” is also a reason for teenagers to get depressed, I guess. May I ask the school teachers, are you trying to train us into geniuses?

As a formal Hong Kong student who moved to sydney, I can relate to this. Schools never prepare us for the future, and 90% of the knowledge they teach is useless or you would never use it in real life. Unlike Western countries, Hong Kong almost never use a laptop for school, so we wouldn't know the basic ICT skills like Word, Powerpoint, etc.

It is good ot give a bit of pressure, like more than USA, like maybe around the level of singapore, but it is not good to have ai and chips to detet if a student is focusing, and then punish them, because some students will nt learn very well when being scrutinized like this. Instead of giving a system of mostly punishments, a system that does light punishments for bad scores and good rewards for good scores should be proper in order to breed a new generation of children.
