Alone Together might just be the most brilliant episode title in the entire series. The intricacies of what it means to be a fusion are explored a lot more later on but this is a fantastic first look at it, and how Stevonnie is both Steven + Connie and an entirely distinct being at the same time. Also pretty sure Stevonnie was Cartoon Network's first nonbinary character!

I feel like my opinion on the ending of "The Test" has changed since I first watched it. The first time I watched it I thought "aw, Steven's so mature, that was so sweet of him!" and now all I can think is that Steven should NOT have to put his feelings aside to make them feel better, the right call here would have been for him to talk it out with them, and The Test isn't truly the happy ending it appears to be.
@3ghostsinatrenchcoat Жыл бұрын
Exactly. It should never be on the child to make the adults feel better, and this episode establishes a very unhealthy pattern of behavior for Steven that harms him again and again under the surface. It’s a really well done arc, subtle but always there.

I think the actor of Stevonnie nailed the personality aspects of both Steven and Connie quite well. Nailed the quirks and cadences. Steven’s fun nature and laugh, Connie’s maturity and concerns. That kind of thing. It’s the small details that really matter.

I feel like "The Test" is the beginning of Steven going above and beyond for the gems and their mental health as in...taking too much on as a kid. I think it's a great way to show how considerate Steven is and how much he loves the CGs, and any kid who loves their parents may do the same thing, but it also begins a trend that may seem detrimental to Steven over the course of the show. We see the gems be vulnerable and expressive (all great things), and we see Steven be who he is, a wonderful and considerate person who uses his voice to uplift those around him (also great). For a long time, there was a joke or theme running through the fandom about how Steven needed a therapist since he seemed to be taking on that role most of the time... Let's just say that I'm excited to see ya'll's reactions to future episodes. :3c

Alone Together is one of those episodes that nearly makes me cry. Simply because of the relationship between Steven and Connie and how pure it is. Two people that care so much about each other that creates an amazing third person that's the amalgamation of their two distinct personalities, and yet something completely new. It makes me think of my relationship and how badly I wish I could fuse with him.

Obligatory comment about Stevonnie being Intersex (due to being a boy+a girl) and uses They/Them pronouns, their biological age is also Steven and Connie's combined, which are facts never stated in the series and every other character just knows it lol A nice detail about Stevonnie and fusions in general is that when their parts start falling out of sync, their one voice (in this case, as Stevonnie) becomes two voices speaking with each other (which we see with the donuts, as the background starts going black, and the dance floor when they finally end up unfusing), we also hear it briefly with Opal when she forgets the Heaven Beetle and unfuses as her grunting turns into Amethyst and Pearl's separately.
@caramel_frappe Жыл бұрын
I think you hear it also when the 3 had turned into Alexandrite for the dinner with Connie's parents. You could hear Pearl not want to eat and Amethyst saying "I'm hungry"

honestly, I think the gems were right to make the fake test. Steven literally found out it was fake right when he was about to die. That being said if they made a real test it should have been more like "Wipeout" or like a basic obstacle course.

it's insane how devastating the ripple effect of 'The Test' is for the rest of Stevens story, since the gems never learn what he needs, as they have a false idea of what makes him happy

Steven growing up is one of the things I adore about this show. The Test is a kid realizing his parents/caretakers... are limited, too. And they don't necessarily have any idea what to do, and are plagued by doubts. It's a critical point where he does the mature thing and lies to THEM to make them feel better. Not always a good idea, but in this case... yeah.

Fusion is such an interesting concept, its even more interesting that the show writers kind of make it feel like a sexual relationship. I love how instead of us actually hearing the voices of Steven and Connie instead Stevonnie's head, we actually just get Stevonnie talking to herself. Because she's not steven and she isn't Connie. Fusion is literally the amalgamation of 2 beings to create an entirely NEW BEING....SO FASINATING
@RGRDBEM Жыл бұрын
The concept of fusion represents various types of relationships rather than just sexual ones (though I agree, season 1 episodes make it seem like sexual ones 🤔). Also, Stevonnie uses they/them pronouns btw.

Before Alone Together the only episodes of Steven Universe I'd seen were Cheeseburger Backpack, Serious Steven, and Bubble Buddies from much earlier in the series, and I wasn't particularly impressed by the stories or Steven himself. Alone Together showed that the show wasn't all goofy shenanigans and could tackle mature issues. The Test's title is clever wording. It showed how much Steven has matured in the past year and demonstrates how he puts the greater good of the Crystal Gem team over his personal feelings. He is slowly becoming the true heir of Rose Quartz.

@@ytbuser8886You commented this a few months ago, so maybe you already know, but I'll answer anyway. If someone's bio says he/him, it means that person wants to be called he.
