I currently have 2 window projections (basement and main floor) but would love to make the entire house a projection. Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated. I know this year is probably too late to get started, but maybe can learn to do it for next year. Excellent job!
@ProjectThisHouse4 жыл бұрын
Hi Matt Scanlan. Thanks for watching. I have been planning tutorials for years, but family life and a full time job makes it hard to find the time to do them. I think the best advice I can give is to start small. Even just lighting up the house with a great texture is a great effect. Then if that works and you feel you have time and energy, begin adding small elements to your project. The biggest mistake is to break your neck on a very ambitious idea on the first try and end up with nothing because you ran out of time or you couldn't make it look right. :)

@@mattscanlan8402 I'm still undecided about this year, but have reformatted some of the older shows to run in case I regret not doing anything. About software: To do the initial "map" of the house, I suggest Autodesk's Sketchbook, which is free. This is basically the same as Photoshop. I use After Effects to put the show together, but in principle any video/motion graphics program will do. I know there are some free ones out there, but not too familiar with any of them. :)

@ProjectThisHouse3 жыл бұрын
Hi fabienne snyers. That effect is actually made in a 3D program (Cinema4D) and took quite a while to do. I created 3D models of five flat frontal sections of the house. Then I cut them up into smaller pieces and extruded them, before hand animating each one individually to pop in and out. After rendering the pieces, I imported and assembled them with the rest of the video in AfterEffects. A lot of work, but in the end a very cool effect. :)

Awesome Job! could you tell me your resolution settings for laptop house trace and final render of video? I tried tracing and my laptop set the projector to 1600 x 900 so when I traced the full screen it kept jumping around. Should I force everything to 1440 x 1800 from begging to end? Thanks for your awesomeness and the knowledge transfer!
@ProjectThisHouse7 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim, thanks for watching. You are touching on something very important: Should you go with your laptop's suggested resolution, or let the projector's native solution be your starting point? I've tried both, and found it's best to go with the projectors native resolution. Anything else will result in scaling, and with any scaling there's a loss of detail or quality and the aspect can get skewed. I've also had problems lining up my finished video up to fit the house perfectly, when I've used other resolutions. So now I'm both tracing and rendering the final video in 1024 x 768 (my projectors native resolution). About the jumping you're mentioning: For my 2017 video, I traced in Photoshop and made a new image with the mentioned dimensions, then chose view/screen mode/full screen mode, which makes the image go full screen without menus. Since the image is the size of the screen, there's no jumping around because of automatic scrolling and the likes. (If you need the menus during your trace, you can view them by pressing "tab"). I hope any of this made sense. :)

I have Cedar siding...will it work on that or only on aluminum siding? Thanks
@ProjectThisHouse4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jose. It doesn't matter what material the siding has, only how light colored it is. The "whiter" the better. You can try to see what I mean if you put a white board up on your siding, and then shine a flashlight with the cone covering 50% on the cedar siding and 50% on the white board. Step back and see the difference. A projector is nothing but a big flashlight. The darker the surface, the poorer result. :)

I have some purchased video elements from AtmosFX that vary in price. Check out their website. Then of course you need a computer to make it - preferably a laptop so you can run the video from it to the projector too. And an audio interface that can connect to a couple of speakers for the audio. You can check prices on that online. Other than that, it's just the time invested. :)

How did you manage to get plaster disaster to overlay so well onto your textures? I must know
@ProjectThisHouse5 жыл бұрын
Hi Aerith. Thanks for stopping by. I actually did have to modify the Plaster Disaster quite a bit, because of the uneven light on the wall, so I rotoscoped each instance of the hands breaking through the wall in After Effects and put it on a new clean background, then I could place them on my texture, using a blending mode - I can't remember which one, probably "multiply" - which it allows some of the texture to be seen through it, hence making it look natural. I know it sounds complicated, but that's the best I can do in writing. :)

@ProjectThisHouse4 жыл бұрын
Hi LeightonRebecca. Thanks for stopping by and watching. This is called projection mapping, and consists of two parts: First the mapping, where you place the projector so its beam covers the whole house. Then you outline the shape and features of the house in a paint program on a laptop connected to the projector while it's being projected onto the house. You mark the placement of the projector, so you can repeat it when showing the finished video. Second step, is the creation of the video, using the "map" you made of the house. I use Adobe After Effects to make the video, and place the different elements so they fit the shape of the house. Textures are done in Photoshop, some of the animations are from AtmosFX, and some I make myself. This video is pretty advanced, but it's easy to get started with something simpler, and still get a great effect. :)
