Please do always do this before going on your trip especially going hiking alone. You dont get to use it if you dont want to, but it will come in handy when you are lost in the woods. It can actually save your life.

A tip, get a good hiking/ back country app as a backup to his suggestions; they work (usually) anywhere and they show trails and roads.Just need a clear view of the sky. I hike/ski in the Colorado wilderness all year. Just BC skied 4 miles to a beautiful lake at 10,800'.

travel before the Internet because widely use (before 2000s) was so much better. Yes, using maps can be very confusing, but sometimes getting lost opens up new vistas and opportunities if you do not have an itinerary.

Walking usually works for me using Google Maps, but once in a while it gets a little glitchy, and you can’t see detailed info about the places usually. It for sure works with Maps.me though - it’s super popular with hikers 🥾

How to download 2 or 3 countries from google maps? I need Servia, Macedonia and Greece, but i cant zoom out, just in 2 parts cant download, Serbia-Macedonia and Macedonia-Greece. Ehy is that? Do i need to exit on travel when come to Macedonia or it will be automaticly added next map offline?

You might just have to download multiple maps instead of trying to fit them all into one. I also recommend downloading the maps.me versions as well, just in case!

G'day Mate, Thanks very much....... I'm going to the Kruger Park in South Africa in August - I was planning to take my Garmin Nuvi 3490 GPS for driving from Joburg to the Kruger but after watching your vid, it sounds like I can download maps of the area onto my iphone using Google maps & then navigate offline using my iphone. Does this make my Garmin redundant?

I’ve never been there, so I can’t speak from experience. But in theory it should work. I wonder if you can do a test run - download the map, then turn off your wifi and data, then try to find directions between destinations there. If you want to be double sure, I bet you’d find an answer in a South a Africa travel Facebook group!

That’s a good question. I’m about 90% sure you do, but it’s been a while since I’ve had to use it offline. You could always just download a map, turn off your data, and see if it works just to make sure!

When I'm in an offline map area and offline and tap the circle for location maps doesn't show me where I'm at. This is also true when I'm online. Updated Google maps but doesn't solve the problem. Solution?

@@ProjectUntethered Would really appreciate solving this. I ride motorcycles in the National Forest and what looks clear on a road map is not so clear in the forest. A "t" could be a "y". I have not done a hard reset yet but failing your success that's my next step.

While this may limit some other features, if you go to settings, google maps, then wireless WiFi, you can prevent google maps from using WiFi or data entirely and force it to use offline mode. Hope this helps!

Hmmm that’s interesting. Are you sure you’re typing in the address correctly? It worked for us traveling around the US in places without cell signal, but it definitely had limitations. Sometimes you have to monkey around with it a bit to get it to work, or you could also try putting in known landmarks nearby to see if that works

I have spent 2 hours trying to get a map ahead of time to write down so I don’t have to keep my music off in order to listen to the bit! I will listen to this again. I’m frustrated because so far my google app will NOT give me directions ahead of time. I want to go on my trip relaxed listening to my music not always having to worry about the bot giving me directions. When I get the google map there is no option for a list of directions ahead of time. I want to drive from Longmont Co to Las Vegas. It’s a 12 hour drive! I don’t understand why I can’t find ANYTHING to give me directions ahead of time I just need the highways so when I do close ups of the highways I can’t see what the other streets are and it’s taking me FOREVER. You can only download the street map view unfortunately. I have no idea why you can't download satellite view, but it's annoying af. I'm not sure what happens when you download the street map and then switch to satellite view with no service, but I would bet it's just going to a blurry forrest.

I wish to use a small map for walking in a cruise port in another country where I have no internet. I can set up a rout on the ship on Wi-Fi, walk there and can't even use it to navigate back.
