so much respect for animators. as a kid I would luckily catch little behind the scenes and how it's made type videos that disney and more often nick would show on commercials. those are a little difficult to find so this is a real treat to study

This is how I draw for the most part. Personally I just call it "mapping". I always hated the mess of construction so would just make little marks as land marks. Compare where they are in relation to each other and the lines get longer as I build. If you marked your landmarks well and pay attention to angles things are pretty proportional and easy to just fill in.

I am wondering, as far as i love her style and her technical ability, how she manages do to animation if she rely so much on references ? I though one's needed to be perfect at drawing every poses to be efficient without relying on a ref.
@ProkoTV
@ProkoTV 5 ай бұрын
This is for a personal work so what she does here will be different than what she does for animation. That being said, animators absolutely use references. You can see it all over behind the scenes videos for big films or smaller projects. So many animators will have reference videos they shot of themselves doing the portion they're going to animate so that they can see some of the nuances of those motions. Being able to understand forms and how they change as you rotate and move them is a great skill to have. But reference is used in pretty much all forms of art in some capacity.
@Metalud0
@Metalud0 5 ай бұрын
@@ProkoTV Interesting, thank you. Yeah i've seen animators studying dancers for complex movements and so on... It's really refreshing to hear that, even at her level, references are still something that important. I guess it's a lifetime journey in constructing our own "bank".

Have you ever done a video on how to make backgrounds for people that draw mostly characters? I draw full Figures and busts/headshots but my backgrounds are usually just blank black or white. I have tried drawing complex backgrounds but it distracts from the figure (and tbh I hate drawing landscapes/backgrounds).
@NATA5II
@NATA5II 11 ай бұрын
It’s in your text. Complex background and complex figure will fight for dominance. If you want your character to stick out, simplify your background. Study backgrounds, squint your eyes and look at what is the most important shapes.

It comes to my mind that I use guidelines because I don't know, most of the time, what am I gonna draw... So I put the guidelines there, sometimes in a nice pose, but I figure what to draw while doing the guidelines... It could be one thing that is taking me away from drawing without the guidelines. Am I right? someone else with that??

Yes. I do the same thing and I realized for me it's a bad habit. When I concentrate and force myself to make what I picture in my head my drawing comes out better. I was told so many times not to use erasers and use what I slap down but no erasing mistakes and adjusting as I go is so obviously better. My art is really sketchy but I swear the drawings are better when I let it be messy.

1. Learn how light works (core shadows, bounce light, etc.) 2. Learn the anatomy of the skull (The skull is more valuable than the muscles in this case, as facial muscles are quite thin) 3. Learn the planes of the face (Utilize the Asaro head and other tools!) These all may seem like daunting tasks, but by just practicing and learning, you can make good portraits!! All of these tasks have an abundance of videos for them, so you can literally just search up 'lighting in drawing' or 'skull anatomy for artists' and start learning! I also recommend you learn how to construct the face utilizing the Loomis head, as it can really assist in anatomy and placement of facial features (This channel, Proko, especially helps in learning the Loomis head method).

For some, a reference is something to be adhered to strictly. For others, it's just a jumping off point or something to pick some details from. Like when you look at a recipe but change a lot of it for your final dish. It didn't mean that the recipe was there for no reason. It got you started. Eliza talks plainly about how she uses reference in the start of the video. There's nothing "bad" or "better" about either approach. Art isn't just one thing and that's a good thing.
