The reason Tanya has magic is that god made sure she had it, since that would force her into the war. He wants her to go trough the toughest situations so that Tanya will develop her faith. Since Tanya knew she would get conscripted, she decided to volunteer. Volunteers are treated better, plus she can get better training these way. There are some spells that they use that they don`t mention, one of them is a kind of doping spell that makes their adrenaline kick into overdrive and enhances their body, that is why Tanya suddenly smiles and looks insane on battle.

The guy Tanya fired deserved it. According to the light novel the guy was repeatedly late or missing work with no excuse, refused to go any classes or do anything else to improve himself, and was just hurting company moral with the other employees by his bad work ethic.

It goes a lot further than that. Japan's work culture and laws make it incredibly difficult to actually fire someone. The way it normally works, if you want to fire someone in Japan you either have to use a lot of soft pressure to make them accept a deal to quite or have to be ready and able to prove extensive incompetence and unwillingness to improve in a court of law. Just being able to straight up fire the guy shows how he was going above and beyond being a shit employee.

The novel is told from Tanya's perspective though which might be an unreliable narrator. It says he missed work for no reason, but he may have had valid reasons listed such as attending a festival held by his daughter's school or something similar, but to Tanya that isn't seen as a valid reason and thus that guy has no excuse for missing those days. That guy may have also had no time to do anything extra for work since he had to take care of his daughter, he might even be a single dad, and when you think about how much getting fired would mean to someone like that, it starts seeming likely that there is more to the story especially since god appears to be siding with that guy.

Being X wants Tanya to admit she has faith in God, that relying on God is the "right" way of life. Just making her weak and letting her die wouldn't have done that. You will see more as the "magic" gets explained, but it requires "prayer", which Tanya uses insincerely. Being X hopes that putting her into situations that require divine assistance to overcome will lead Tanya to pray sincerely.

It's not that she doesn't believe that Being X exists it's that she refuses to believe he's god. Tanya despises war from both a moral and a practical standpoint. She joined the military because during times of war which were clearly coming all mages pretty much get drafted. So she decided to volunteer and become an officer so she could exploit that to get a successful carrer. She wants a high rank quickly to get away from the front but is TOO good at her job so people keep her on the front because the false personality she shows to others makes everyone think she's a warmonger who wants to be there. She fucks herself by misinterpreting what everyone around her thinks.

Personally I prefer the anime’s interpretation of Being X to that of the manga (which I assume follows the LN more faithfully) as a formless being with unfathomable power and an alien personality, as opposed to a bunch of basically superhumans sitting around the table arguing about how to make Tanya truly believe in them and their status (similar to the Greek gods). Speaking through others to make people believe in him without ever revealing his true face (if indeed he has one) seems like a very “Old Testament God” thing to do

@@emianawuzzhere5121 She also uses her knowledge of the similar events..she remembers how the 2 world wars in the original non-magic timeline she originally came from went and uses that knowledge to help the Empire along with other various wars that happened..all in her quest to survive and live a safe life in the back lines. Problem is she uses Signaling Theory and has great faith in it..but it sends VERY mixed messages because she gives off the image of the perfect Empire soldier. She thinks her way of presenting herself will get her into the rear but she doesn't want to accept that her methodology and ideology are the problem..she's using the same methods that got her far as a Salaryman in modern Japan..she's now in a magic powered WW1 timeline and it's backfiring more often than not in her quest to live a safe life.

I think the lack of respect is for Tanya is less a function of being a girl and more a product of her age not even being in double digits. There may be some sexist behavior going on too, but I really think its because she's barely passed toddler age and she's giving orders to adults trying to intimidate and bully them into compliance.

"God" doesn't care at all about teaching Tanya a lesson. Not in the sense of making Tanya a better person, at least. "God" just wants Tanya to pray and worship him. The exact reason depends on which version of Youjo Senki it is, but fundamentally the "God" is never a good existence in any of them. As Tanya puts it, even if the "God" is a higher being as evidence suggests, it's highly unlikely that the "God" is actually THE God (or gods, again depending on the version of Youjo Senki in question). It's far more likely that it's the devil, or some other unknown existence. Hence why Tanya calls it Being X. Just an important distinction for people watching in case they think like the crew here and just accept Being X's claim that it's God. Also, fuck that guy who straight up murdered Tanya in her previous life because he fucked up way too much. He must've messed up a ton to get fired because Japan HATES firing people. Japan much prefers to pressure them to quit themselves, usually by moving them to an unfavorable position. At worst, they're most likely to get pushed into a dead end job, generally some sort of miscellaneous department. That he got fired shows just how badly he was performing and behaving. The anime doesn't cover it, but the LN gives slightly more details as to how poorly the guy was doing. I've heard people argue that Tanya ruined the guy's life and thus Tanya's murder was justified, but I just ignore those types of people since they're literally defending a murderer who got pissy at being punished for his own repeated mistakes.

What the show fails to mention, is that when she is getting hurt and acting a bit crazy, she is using magic to drug herself. She's using her future knowledge to dope herself up so she can keep going. Also in this particular episode, the LN explains the artillery where scared to shit of the enemy mages and thought they where gonna die. So her holding them off made them think her a hero, and it was the artillery commander that recomended the medal.

Might be wrong but the reason he has aptitude is precisely so that he, as a girl in that time, would be put in the army. God tells him "live as long as you can." So putting him or her in the army to fight wars for her survival, as we see this episode, makes sense.

In the light novel apparently, the dude who pushed the protag into the path of the train was offered a transfer to a job that was more his skill level multiple times, with no loss of pay and even better hours, but he refused every single one stubbornly. They skip over a lot of stuff like that, including how the Empire Tanya was born into was attacked and invaded by the neighboring nations first (those marching soldiers Tanya shelled were actually trespassing on the Empire's land, as a genuine invasion attempt) cause the Empire is newly formed and they didn't like not being the top dogs anymore. It's following the First World War in that a lot of nations at the start are thinking in terms of war 40 years ago, and not adapting to the new technology or tactics. Hence why the Not-French footsoldiers were marching in a big slow column, a thing that actually happened IRL, a lot.

Its the Finish/Sweedish who invade, they moved into lands claimed by both germany and them. They just had a new government come to power and though thye could get public on their side by retaking them fully. They thought germany would not challenge them. Prior to this there was a bunch of low key skiirshes. Tanya got warent office in a covert raid while in the end of her training.

Also, Tanya is a walking paradox. She hates the wast of war. She understands the the costs associated with killing. And, she wants to survive. These things congeal in her to make her extremely efficient and brilliant at waging war. Also, the LN states in her previous life she adhered to a School of Economics call the Chicago School of Economics. Watch some Milton Friedman to get the jist of that economic philosophy. One of the tenets of this school is there is a cost for every action. Therefore you make the most economical decision. And, that applies to war and politics. And, one of foundations war and politics is economics.

EXACTLY! In my opinion, this is definitely one of those anime where I feel the Dub just does such a great job fleshing out the character’s and show. Not to say the Sub and it’s actor’s are by any means bad, but for me at least the Dub excels more at sending chills down my spine and getting me hyped.

I loved the dub because the VA for Tanya is Stocking, which makes it like 100 times funnier. She also did the dubs for Asirpa from Golden Kamuy, Kaede (the green haired girl? was that her name?) from Assassination Classroom, and Mei from FMA Brotherhood.

Having a high level of magic is a bad thing for Tanya’s goals as it will all but guarantee her conscription in the army, so seeing it as inevitable she volunteered so that she can control how it happens. She works extremely hard to make sure she will one day have an easy life. She doesn’t care about good or bad or empathy or spirituality; she cares about following the rules and achieving her goals. Oh, and proving Being X wrong that she must validate their existence. It’s rare that she strays, and when she looks like she is, it’s probably an ulterior motive. It’s great.

Fun little note that you don't see outside of the books - the reasons for Tanya's rather manic expressions are the side effect of spell she cast upon herself. Which more or less is a non-habit forming version of meth (it gets compared to the meth WW1 and 2 era soldiers used as a combat stimulant a few times).

In the anime all the different ways they use magic to fly are set up by what country they hail from...in the manga and light novel that's not a thing. They just use the computation orbs to do it. In the anime it makes it more obvious which side is which if they all have a different magical powered apparatus to get them flying. It helps when the mid-air combat gets a little hectic due to animation being...well..animated and the book and manga being static so there wasn't a need to have different devices for flying shown.

To be fair, Being X also refused to allow Tanya to live a peaceful life. About to live in the rear comfortably? Talk to her superiors and force her back onto the front lines. Dominating her enemies? Gives her enemies a power boost just so they could push Tanya to the edge. Successfully end the war in victory? Nope, sorry, we'll letting the enemy escape so that the war will keep going on much longer. Being X doesn't care about wrong and right. He just wants to be worshipped. Tanya killing people and committing war-crimes? He doesn't care. Hell, he practically encourages it so he will have more willing subjects that want to seek revenge on Tanya. ...That said, you're definitely right about her attitude. Maybe not the smartest idea to criticize and insult a being with god-like powers to its face. It's understandable, seeing as he was about to die anyways as Being X stood there uncaring, but not very well thought out.

Tanya is sent to an alternate world where she is reliving World War I with magic, while fighting for Germany as a child soldier. She has all the memories of history from her original world to fall back on. An interesting note is that she's young enough while warping the course of history in WWI to still be alive an shape events in World War II if she survives. Survival seems likely.

Each Countries' Mages' flying equipment is tied to their Cultural History of that Country, so the Imperials have a Single boot and front pack as a reference to "Das Boot", the French use Horse-like machines because of France's history of having superior Heavy Cavalry and here the Scandanavians use Skis because during the Winter War they would use Ski's to get from location to Location faster than the enemy forces.

What's neat about this episode, is that in the English dub which is not that bad, but I digress, when they realize she's out of ammo and she tackles him she whispers in his ear: "I don't need ammo..." Before blowing up which I thought was better for the scene. The German and I think it was the French dub that also were pretty cool during this scene

It is mentioned in the light novels all the time but they kept mentions of it out of the show.

Yep, higher ups didnt think germany would stop rthem, it was lands claimed by both countries. They had a treaty, so they told soldier it was training so nobody would freak out. They had just had a change in government leadership and wated a way to get public support on their side.
