Mary is the WORST type of soldier, which is why she seemed to annoy her superiors. She has alot of magical potential, but she isn't sharp and doesn't focus on the big picture. Most importantly, she doesn't follow orders which is a HUGE deal when your in a front line unit. Team work is EVERYTHING when you want to have the greatest chance of survival. Nobody wants a person that always runs off by themselves doing their own thing on their team.

Those are just the plot conveniences that Mary Sues are afforded. Mary has a lot of the character traits Mary Sues typically have. Also shes like 3 times more powerful than Tanya and her allies do like her but because the plot isnt bending over backwards for her their love for her disappears as she keeps endagering people's lives. Its like a realistic take on what a Mary Sue would actually be like.

@@UtDanik Nah Tanya was right. The Cessna got through due to a series a screw up by the Soviets and led to the dismissal of the Minister of Defence and Chief of Air Defence Forces. Both this and the KAL incident in 1983 just proves Tanya’s point because in both cases the planes weren’t undetected, they were misidentified just like Tanya and group. Then again, it happened in 1987 when the Soviet Union wasn’t exactly in its prime anymore.

He is a parody of Lavrentiy Beria, he was known to pick up young girls off the street, and well, do bad things to them. Tunisians took control of Beria's old Moscow Estate for their embassy, when doing construction/landscape work they came across the remains of many of Beria's victims. Stalin pretty much swept it under the rug because Beria was chief of the NKVD.

Everyone who's interested in him or that period in general, go watch "The Death of Stalin", it's an amazing movie which pretty much retells as a satire the story of Stalin's death and the struggle for succession to his place in the Soviet Union. Beria is one of the main characters.

Lupa was wrong. A railway gun and a rail gun are two different things. A railway gun is just artillery mounted to a train car and can move along the rail system. A rail gun uses electromagnetic rails to accelerate a projectile. Roshi correct.

The Soviets "Federation" here purging their mages is a good parallel to the real world, when the Stalin regime purged scientists and scholars. Those they didn't shoot they sent to labor camps. Then the Germans attacked, and they realized how woefully behind their equipment was, and many of the scientists and engineers previously branded as 'traitors' were 'emancipated' to work for the state. This was especially true for rocket scientists and missile experts after the war, like Chelomei and Korolev, who would later go on to be lauded as state heroes.

Tanya has normal magical talent, she's exceptional at using it for combat and tactics but not in terms of raw power. The way she and her squad uses illusions and the like to confuse and outmaneuver enemy mages is a big part of what makes them so deadly in combat. I feel this doesn't get shown off much at all in the anime sadly but it does tend to be a thing in the manga and/or novel. Her special 'computation jewel' DOES give her superhuman levels of magic power for limited time, with the caveat of needing to pray when she does it and so on and is only really useful as a special move and not something she can just do at will. (Rather, its not that she cant but if she did start praying and believing in X like that all the time, X would win). Mary meanwhile is just straight up OP, as I recall she got no less than 3 blessings applied directly to her. So her comp-jewel and gear is nothing special but she's basically got utterly superhuman levels of magical power... Can heal from pretty much any injury and there was one other thing that I forget what it was. Suffice to say that in terms of raw power, Mary would stomp Tanya with ease. But Mary is too high on her own cause and the glory of the lord so she's not putting proper effort into training her practical skills and lacks the by now years of combat experience Tanya has. We also see that she's not exactly a team player either where Tanya's squad and what they can get done as a unit is one of her greatest strengths. Ultimately Mary is a most unfortunate young girl who's been turned into being X's weapon to challenge Tanya and keep the little Murmaider of the skies from more or less singlehandedly winning world war 0.9 and, ideally for X, force Tanya to give in and pray to X for the power to beat Mary where tactics, logic and the like eventually fall short of overcoming the clustertruck of divine blessings and op bullshit. Needless to say X underestimates both Tanya's tenaciousness and her competence in this regard... Or perhaps it should be said X overestimates Mary's ability to capitalize on her blessings simply because Tanya keeps making minimal but highly effective use of the one forced on her? Either way looking forward to seeing what happens in season two!

Railway gun is a massive cannon that the only way to transport is via railways. Railgun is a gun or cannon that uses electromagnetics to propel its payload at greater speeds than found in normal firearms. So a railway gun is determined by size while a Railgun is determined by firing method.

That was the german railway cannon, and while the one in this episode might be inspired by it, the real deal was actually a lot bigger and fired shells weighing 7 tonne. It was a terrible weapon though, since it could only fire a dozen rounds per day and the barrel wore out after a few hundred shots.

The thing about the cessna at 10:50 is about a german pilot who landed very close to the red square in Moscow during the time of the soviet union. He flew north towards norway and sweden and invaded the russian airspace this way. He was not detected by russian AA and could easily land in the middle of Moscow. It was a great uproar at that time :D

to clear up some confusion the railway cannon is not a railgun its just a extremely big cannon used for artillery support that was extremely powerful and was a real thing. It shoots massive shells like a regulars cannon and its is called a railway gun because it is so bug they have do have a small army build a railway for it to travel on when they needed to move it. because it was on rails like a train.

Am I the only person that doesn't see Tanya as a trash human being? At most, she doesn't let sympathy effect her work; she knows how to keep personal feelings out of work, except for her personal feeling of hatred toward Being X giving her motivation to succeed in war, but she would be fighting for her life regardless so it doesn't really count. If the plot wasn't based on war, in which the only two outcomes of the conflict is for one side or the other to be defeated/killed, it would actually be easier to root for both sides. There's no middle ground during combat, though. Only the political aspect of the plot can yield a peaceful outcome for all sides; otherwise, you just root for the characters you're more invested in, especially when you know the plot must go on (season 2 being announced and Tanya vs Being X not being resolved).
