Have you accepted a promotion without a pay raise?
@jandinunez97104 жыл бұрын
Jennifer Brick I am being offer a promotion w/o raise. I have only been working for this company a month and they are trying to offer me 2 offices worth of work and no raise. Only my manager spoke to me and she doesn’t seem to have all the details so I’m so confused. I am already taking a huge down cut from the amount I believe I can get paid somewhere else.

Another thing standing up on a video and moving so much kind of gave me anxiety. See if others feel this way. Feedback can help you improve. Thanks

Mimii Lovee oh no, I kindly turned it down and then ask them to revisit it in the future when they are able to accompany the promotion with the raise.

This happened to me many years ago! Turns out, my manager never filed the paperwork and didn't tell head office about it! It was literally a way to get me to do more work without paying me for it 😂 Needless to say, I left the company not long after that!

That is so dodgy of your old manager!

The same shit happened to me, they promise many things at the beginning. Once it’s time for a raises, they come up with a bunch of arguments that they are still trying to figure out the whole raise situation and how they will compensate us. Then the manager acts dumb that he didn’t know about the shitty raise I got.

Never to fall into this trap. Years ago early in my career I wanted to get promoted so bad. I started to take over the supervisor jobs daily tasks and thought that would promote me. Nope. My worked expected it from me for no pay increase or the job title. The job after that I was told I was getting promoted right away. I asked how much was the pay increase. I was told rudely “None”! I said no thanks. Over 9 years I saw people roped in and did the supervisor job for no increase. They would quit after 1 year or two. I am up for promotion at my new job. I already told them my past stories and they know they will have to increase my pay.

happened to me just recently - got a promotion, no salary increase and this was after 6 months of doing a double role - sales + customer success, so I was very upset I did not get a raise. it really affected my motivation

Blaming people for "not effectively communicating your value" is bullcrap. Some companies will only understand one point of leverage - "pay raise or I walk away". If those companies aren't confronted with that decision, they will keep you working till 70 years old, and you will spend that whole time communicating your value and not getting promotions with no raise.

Just shocking really that employers do this. I was promoted from a floater/helper to a LEAD teacher in charge of an entire classroom of children, only later learning it would be WITHOUT a pay increase. I was lied to in my interview completely and have handwritten notes from the day to prove it. It’s just despicable.

I just got a promotion but no raise so I am very disappointed, however, I am looking for a new job so the new title helps. The next time I'm offered promotion, I'll politely decline but say I would like to revisit the offer when it comes with a raise.

This is the most helpful and relevant video I have seen on raises. My director did go to bat for me. The offer wasn't as much as I expected, but I asked him to help with merit and equity increases. The advice about calling dibs on the future budget is helpful. No other company would have taken me seriously if I applied for this title because it's different what I have previously done.

Very interesting! Love that you brought up figuring out whether the person who gave you the promotion already went to bat for you. There are so many factors that can influence why you're getting the salary you're getting and it's important to understand it all. Love seeing channels with similar content to mine and hearing different takes on this. Great video!

Let me keep it real. A promotion with no raise means more headaches and no reward. If you don't get a raise during a promotion then you will not get one. Look elsewhere. Pay raise are limited but your to do list has no limits. You want to work for someone who values you.

Yes, I've seen a trend down (at least in tech non-enterprise size companies)... but hope is not lost and you can still get the pay raise you deserve :)

just take the promotion and move on after a while. keep well with bosses and respectfully decline counter offers. and later down the road if you need a job with them again, you will be in a better position.

Really interesting video. I was in a situation where I got a promotion (higher job title) without immediate raise in salary. For my case it happened automatically after one year. But what I would advise in such cases not to commit to your boss to do additional work and not to take more responsibilities. Even if you do not meet your bosse's new expectations after your promotion, always be aware that for a company it is much more expensive to get a new worker with high skils than to keep a slightly underpayed current worker, so it is unlikely they will lay you off for not meeting those too high expectations. In long term, my promotion did help to raise my salary significantly after 3 years or so, but that may not be the case for other people. Even worse thing is if they promote you to some lower manager position without getting salary increase. This may be a situation when a person has to decline the offer since one becomes responsible of other workers, and it even has some legal implications. Other strategy could be to use the new position title to get a better payed job in other company within one year, but one should not allow himself to stay too long on underpayed position.

Started at a Safeway in Washington about 9 months ago. Went from entry level to night crew lead in 3 months, no pay raise. Another 3 months I'm promoted to frozen foods manager.... Again no pay raise. Finally got a raise about a month and a half ago, the auto-step raise.... it was 5 cents. Im just insulted at this point but from what ive read its very common for Safeway.

How do you know if it is a promotion or lateral move when pay is so secretive? I was changed from a credit counselor to a housing counselor, when I asked if it was a promotion they said the company is going in the direction of combining the 2 roles and it didn’t come with an increase.

My former manager went to bat for me time and again, every time, the owners changed the game and wanted more documentation, my boss did that, had high praise from customers and other department heads and all the numbers they said they - owners - they wanted. FAA even said my documentation was top notch and research some of the best. Customer complaints had gone down and profits up, still I got nothing. my boss after he was let go after bringing company to the top three suppliers of this industry told me, the owner said I was good at the pay I am at. The truth is, the ass kissers get the raises and perks, the hard workers just get more work, longer hours and the same pay.
@JenniferBrick4 жыл бұрын
That's so frustrating. The hard part of working with owners/founders is they perceive the company money as their money. When you ask for a raise the greedy ones don't want to let it go. In case like this where they won't change, and they create the leadership culture, it can be worth exploring options. No matter what, having a Plan B is essential. And I very much after working hard isn't an effective career advancement strategy (I kinda harp on it here).

in current markets, its best to keep moving jobs every 1.5-2 years. companies are only loyal to themselves so why you should be any difference.
