Who is the reader, please? Anne McElvoy has excellent paper credentials, but with all respect, as an interviewer she comes off as arch, pompous and interrupts Mr. Le Carre far too much.

The interviewer is such an egoistic/pompous arse. When will they ever understand that the job of the interviewer is to listen and not to offer opinions or to lead conversations to where they want to? But John le Carre handled it so very well.

Yes, I agree with you. However, Mr. Le Carre handled it well, as he always does during his interviews. Mr. Le Carre is simply so much more sophisticated, intelligent, experienced, and insightful that most people who consider themselves above average, that the interviewer must feel somewhat insecure and this feeling may manifest itself in causing the interviewer to act in an overconfident way.

Excellent reader, the British actor John Shrapnell, reminiscent of Orson Welles at times. Always excellent le Carre.
