I appreciate so much that you took the time to break it down for us trying to understand. You're an amazing and patient teacher. An extremely helpful lesson for a person with learning disabilities like adhd and dyslexia as well. Thank you!

Thank you for the lesson! My kids can relate the "nh" sound to the "n" in English words such as onion, companion, canyon. Hope the same examples also help your students and audience. We appreciate the pronunciation exercise! Though you said the story was "silly", it was very helpful! Cám ơn thầy Phi!

ng feels impossible. To my ears I sound correct, but to natives not. I must have spent about 3 hours with vietnamese people practising kust the ng sound, but still can't get it. Nh is easy though.
@-wil2013 Жыл бұрын
Hi, for Anglophones, “ng” is easier, it’s the “ng” of “singer”.

Guys so basically, try saying nya but without moving your tongue for ng
@LearnVietnameseWithSVFF Жыл бұрын
Hi lightcrown777, thank you for your comment and for sharing your pronunciation tip! That's a great way to approach the "ng" sound in Vietnamese by trying to say "nya" without moving your tongue. We appreciate your input and hope that it can be helpful for others in their Vietnamese learning journey. Thanks for watching!

I had to pronounce Ng today in church and had no clue how to do it. Took me by surprise because the prayers weren't available ahead of time. Because the only Vietnamese name I know how to pronounce is Nguyen, I used that. It was wrong, but who was gonna know? Everyone was white.

nh was from Portuguese. nh in Portuguese is the same sound as Spanish ñ. ng was from Chinese, especially southern Chinese dialectal accents. Ng(sometimes anglicized/romanized as Ang or Eng) can be the pronunciation of two last names which sound different in Cantonese, Fujianese, etc... yet both are romanized as Ng: 吳/吴[Ngô in Vietnamese](吴: actually no such character exists, but is taken to be the simplification of 吳) & 伍(a Chinese surname which wasn‘t borrowed in Vietnamese. For Chinese people living in Vietnam, người Hoa, having known that both Chinese characters sound the same or almost the same in southern Chinese dialects would probably use Ngô as a guide for 伍 as a last name which is ngũ for the number five in Chinese as written on checks to prevent fraud,or it could be a different sound. The Ng sound in Vietnamese could sound different than it should be when Ng is attached to other sounds. Nguyễn is a Vietnamese last name and the Chinese last name 魏 is Nguỵ in Vietnamese(that's a dot below the y for the 6th tone or dầu nặng?)

70% of Vietnamese words were loaned from Chinese words, not a big surprise
@thichtrongcayvietnam9 ай бұрын
@@justanotheruser2611you are so stupid. What linguistic research did you get your information of the rate of 70% from? There are not any research of the rate of 70%. So you fabricated it. Stop lying.

Ng is in many ASEAN languages and other languages, not only from chinese.

Great job on the pronunciation differentiation... However, from a teacher's perspective- it would be great for you to put these terms into perspective. What is actually being said?? Are these just individual consonant blends or are these actual words and phrases. I can hear the difference phonetically but I have absolutely no clue what you are saying. Would be great to see the difference between all these different pronunciations along with their meaning.

I think found an example of the initial Ng sound in American English.(?) It is the sound that Curly from the 3 Stooges used to make. (They were a comedy team from the 30s-50s). Here is a quick example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3zXqJ9-i5ZghZo If this is the right sound, please let me know.

"ng" (or "ngh") sounds like a little more than just an "n" sound in English ("nuh"), I guess, but... when I try to copy the way it was pronounced in the vid (at 1:05, etc), the way I was moving my jaw felt like I was trying to clear out my sinuses, or something! At 1:18 the end of "sing" or "hang" in English includes the sound of the vowel, so it's hard to think of what the "ng" should sound like without the vowel... From the vid it looks like you don't open your mouth (as much) for "ng" as you do for "nh"... If I would be a "người nước ngoài" in Vietnam, I should at least know how to say it!! :)
