I love this. What about the word button? I've heard it pronounced buddon, buTTon, and the way i say it sounds like it omits the middle consonants entirely "buh-un."

*sigh * I do love the crisper sound of the t-version, but I'm also tired of being recognized as an ESL person. Out with the _t,_ then... And thanks for explaining that bit about the _nt._ 😊

The King's Daughter, you can keep the "T". If you are recognized as ESL, that is not the reason.

Oh, I must differ with you. The T may be softened - sometimes, but it it there. (Native speaker here.)

Teachers don't need to teach this to native speakers because accent is not taught to native speakers. Yes, this is standard American English. You will also hear newscasters speaking this way.

I've lived in the States all my life (West Coast and Midwest) and dropping the t sounds very unnatural to me in all but the word twenty. I'm not sure if this is entirely accurate.

It’s not necessarily more academic in American English. The T is usually skipped even in academic environments.

Succinct comment, and absolutely correct. Just because a pronunciation might be prevalent doesn't make it somehow correct. I'm from U.K., and many get pronunciation things wrong, like "bofe" for both, or "bu'er" for butter. Winner is the person coming first; winter is the season before spring. Easy! Clarity!
