I sold my B5 S4 when my eldest came along and went into a boring diesel as I couldn’t risk big bills. Now they’re older and things have settled I’ve had a B8 RS4 and currently a C7 RS6. Realising only my daughter loves cars, the RS6 is up for sale and being replaced with a V8 R8. My son can stay home and play Minecraft while my daughter and I go to shows 😎

I’ve been saying this for years. My wife has the practical car. People think I’m nuts and immature with an LC500 as a daily driver that has a baby seat in the back 😂. I say it’s a horrible waste of resources to have multiple soul crushingly boring “practical” cars. Guess what, my LC500 because it’s fun is my daily… and when we go somewhere on the weekend my wife almost always wants me to take mine … I end up doing more mileage then her “practical car”.

We came across the whole UK, mostly Scotland, thousands of miles with kids in the back. But this year I'm looking to buy my next family car a Jaaag XK 4.2. You, Number 27 and Jay Em had been a big inspiration for this decision. That is gonna be my first V8. I drove a Gallardo on a motorway some years ago but never a V8. I've always loved cars and I think one of the reasons for that was the first car i remember my Dad having...a 1988 VW Jetta GTi 16v. That thing was an absolute rocket to me as a 2 year old! It sparked a lifelong obsession with all things car. Now that I've got kids of my own, I love nothing more than going out for a drive with my son in my 325ti. It's nothing particularly special, but we both love it! Saving up for my Aston though...either a Rapide or a V12Vantage.

100% agree on everything. The Hot Hatch came into existence because of the desire to have a fast, fun but practical family car! And that Picanto GT is a perfect example of the modern small hot hatch. I've said it for years about nice/exciting cars in general; if you can afford to buy it (Whatever 'it' is) and run it, and you want it now, then do it, because 'tomorrow' might not happen and then you end up having never had that nice car. You might only own 'it' for a few months but you did it, you bought that car that you wanted; you ticked that life-box. An ordinary car doesn't make things like a trip to a fun fair less of a memory, but a nice car becomes part of the memory; such as making 'popcorn' in the exhaust and helps make that bond even stronger.

Having owned 530d touring’s (my own Dadcar) for the last ten years (I’ve got 3 daughters), finances meant I had to get rid of the latest one at the end of last year and get an iX3 as a company car. Other than it being about 45% cheaper to fuel it’s a worse car in every other way compared to a fast estate. I can only reiterate to others that there is no SUV/cross over that is better than your own version of a cool Dadcar.👍

I’ve only got two kids. Yet my wife has an X1 and I’ve two cars of my own. A Cayman S (987.1) and a F06 640d Gran Coupe (the sensible dad car with some styling). I unfortunately do big miles at the moment (2500-3000 a month) so diesel is a requirement. But when that changes, I’m selling both of mine for a 911. Not sure if it will be a proper analog 996 or a 997 C2S. Although a Daderatti would be nice too ……

The fact that this guy and his way of thinking is not exponentially more popular just says a lot about the lack of reason and ability to make rational decisions instead of doing the lazy thing and relying on intuition in people today. I work in IT and the amount of people pedaling and regurgitating same nonsensical bull about the necessity of owning Qashqais, X1s, Tiguans, YarisXs and similar ridiculous "urban SUVs" they heard in sponsored reviews of "renowned" car shows without even trying to implement even a second of their own independent thought about it is frightening. At the same time, those same people stare at me in shock when I say that my family car is A5 sportback (one kid and one on the way) and that I have 0 intention or need for replacing it any time soon. I know it's not a Maserati, but it is 100X more fun to drive (or even just sit in) than those wobbly, high sitting, 0 emotion inducing killers of "car enthusiast" car market. To you my British lookalike (bald guy with ginger beard here too), hats off and a all the best from Serbia. So awesome to see that there are still people with brains and reason left in this world!

@dule23

@@dadcars well the issue is that your position requires ability to think with your own head and implement objectivity and rationality. And that unfortunately is in short supply in today's world. Great question, insurance companies are fully aware of the multimac, when I told mine about the Gransport now having a 3 across in the back they were absolutely fine and simply suggested I keep hold of my invoice in the event of a claim I.e. in the event the car was stolen.

Quite subjective, isn't it? I've got 5 kids, albeit 3 of them are between 12 and 21, but two of them under 2. If we go for a big day out (which is what I prefer to do) then we need a fair bit of space, like a double buggy, bags and what not but I value that comfort and practically over performance that isn't really that useable on the road anyway. So in a way, I'm enthusiastic about the practical uses of a car and what it can do for me and the family, hence why I drive a C4 grand spacetourer. Massive, comfortable, but not amazing to drive. Lets not villify the word "sensible" or "practical".
