There is another efficiency-shaving factor you probably underestimated: Spanish road surfaces. Spanish motorway pavement is very coarse compared to most other European countries and, in my experience, this alone cuts about 10% off your normal gas-mileage. Nice video!

Thanks bro ♥️ Cruise is constantly trying to hold selected speed and doesn't tend to do the efficiently, it will also brake the car on longer downhills, we used the limit as a guage and modulated the throttle ourselves for more efficiency, the limit also allows the car to coast about said limit on longer downhills 👌 We kept AC on as 22 hours in 30+ degrees C would have destroyed us, certainly worth the 1-2% loss in overall range 👊

My observation, having done this trip a few times: You may have been better leaving the first evening rather than waiting til early morning. I never sleep well the night before a big trip anyway so leaving home at 9pm instead of 5am makes sense. Also means the end of the journey when you are beginning to tire is in daylight and your body clock isn't demanding sleep quite so urgently.

I would say it's better to have any sleep before such a long trip, having sleep depravation issues on the road can be deadly. I've had scenarios with my eyes closing on me during driving, it's a high no no, always sleep before the trip, or else risk your life, especially when you drive alone and your decision making is skewed when very tired.
@PTFolderTraining
@PTFolderTraining Жыл бұрын
The only thing about this strategy is would you sleep in the day before setting off? If you set off at night when you naturally want to go to bed, then after two hours you have a break in the tunnel, and possibly a nap, and I wonder if you would be even more tired after? I did a 24h/ 1100m drive from UK to Poland, set of just after lunch, found it to be really good optimum, had a good night sleep and a kip, was rested, and I knew that I will be in my destination after breakfast. I guess each strategy has it's positives and negatives.

Diesals are really good I recently drove from North England to Paris and back in a 2.0l diesal Audi A6. Drove almost 850 miles and when I filled up the computer said I had 25 miles left. I wasn't driving particularly economically was using Air con and cruising between 80-90 mph (well in France anyway UK roads not so much 😅). If I tried I could have got well over 900 miles on a tank. When you consider the BMW is a 3l 6 pot compared to my 2l 4 pot makes it all the more impressive, maybe its because you don't have to work the engine as hard 🤔
@nollekeuh
@nollekeuh Жыл бұрын
What if you drive 60 miles per hour and the 6 pot does that with 1100 revs. The 4 pot needs 1600 revs for 60 miles per hour. What does that say about amount of combustions per revolution and per mile? Not to think about the possibility to disable cylinders on the 6 pot and the 4 pot cannot do that? Yes, a 6 cylinder has more internal moving parts and friction, but it also has more tricks on its sleeve compared to the 4 pot and that's also where you pay extra for.
@mahinahmed2316
@mahinahmed2316 Жыл бұрын

@mysteryMachinePL
@mysteryMachinePL Жыл бұрын
Bigger block will always do better on highways and hills over large distance, smaller ones are champs in small distance driving. You will get your engine to "working" temp within 10 miles, and 6 cyl 3l will need additional 5 to get to same level of economy if not more. So, if you plan on driving a lot through long distance, go with bigger engine and around city even 2l is too much.

Hi Joe, thanks for another great video! I live in Madrid - for a few decades now - (you just about went past my house, 10km north of Plaza Castilla.) I have done that trip many times, well Madrid/Sheffield/Madrid in my case. Just did Madrid/Glasgow/Sheffield/Madrid, to collect our youngest son who just completed his degree at the Uni. of Glasgow and attend my sister´s 3 day birthday celebrations. We went in a 2013 530D x-drive, via Troyes/Charleroi/Rotterdam/Hull/Sheffield/Glasgow route there and back (avoiding Paris and London, now, massive no-go´s for me after having stopped on Christmas runs on various occasions to see lights etc.) On this trip we did a 1-night stop in Blois (beautiful town on the Loire) after 1080 km from home (Alcobendas) but with plenty of time for dinner, then sleep on overnight ferry to Hull. Same routine for return journey. All told I did 5254 km @ 7.5l/100km giving an average speed, over 58.32 hours, (in 8 days mind) of 92.2km/h. This sounds slow but is misleading as when on motorways I certainly crack on. In France, there were times when I would have sworn I had the paparazzi on my tail! The BMW 6 cylinder diesels are marvellous, we have 3. Wife 640d Cab (313hp), son 330d Cab. (231 hp). All great, really quick, really economical. I would, probably, change my "old 5" for a 840d 48V Grand Coupe as my wife sees the 7 as a bit of an "old mans car"! I do like 6 cyl. diesel 7´s tho', then again, I am an old man! (The 1 downer I would have to say owning BM'S is - avoid the run-flats like the plague, they have no give whatsoever, crashing on unseen potholes or sleeping policemen if not going REALLY slow and they don't run flat for more than a (very) few kms. before the tire wall starts to rip apart.) Keep the vids coming Joe!

Great video you picked the most economical route, when I did it we went through Andorra so that would have massively impacted your economy, although it did have amazing views. Great job guys! I hope you enjoyed your trip. This is the only reason why I love this car brand. I own an old 2010 E90 325d with N57 engine and AT transmission and man, I love this car all the way. I've been an owner for 2 years now, and I can't believe how a car with 204HP and 510Nm can be so efficient in terms of fuel consumption. I mainly use the car for work, i.e. I do about 85 km of open road and a bit of highway, normal driving, respecting road restrictions and the car shows that it consumes between 5.6 and 6 liters per 100 km. I'm very satisfied. Once again, great job guys... Cheers

Its poisoned by the public because its poisening the public. The model 3 performance just did 1000KM in 9:15 hours on Bjorns channel (airco on), averaging 108 KM/h (far faster than the average speed of this Diesel car) and consumed 212KW/h while doing so. Costs via superchargers is roughly 50 euro and had zero nitrogen emmissions. Extrapolated to 110 miles (1770KM) this would be 88 euro and almost 17 hours triptime. This BMW car was slower on average while it weights less than the Model 3, while concuming 73 liters of diesel (costs way more than the 88 euro electricity). Yes you have to stop regularly to charge 10/15 minutes with an EV but i think its safe to say you want to stop 4/5 times anyway during a 22 hour roadtrip. So if you think diesels are a great piece of machinery, what do you think about modern EV's? Mindblowing? Spaceships from another dimention?
