Thank you for watching. Plant propagation is way easier than most people think. If you want to propagate just about anything, check out my book "Free Plants for Everyone" here: amzn.to/2YiGHtP If you are interested in monetizing your passion for plants by starting your own home plant nursery, you should enjoy my book on the topic - check it out here: amzn.to/38uwRXu Get my free composting booklet: www.thesurvivalgardener.com/simple-composting/ "Compost Your Enemies" T-shirts: www.aardvarktees.com/collections/vendors?q=The%20Survival%20Gardener

How long does it take before it is safe to transplant to a bigger pot? i follwed the video and had many that threw out new leaves and flowers, but when I went to repot, it didn't look liker there was any roots at all, and the plants ended up dying.

You can propagate Bougies from large pieces/stumps/cuttings as thick as your arm. 30-40cm long, put in tub with 6 inches of sand, water them , cover with plastic, keep moist. In a month or 2 you will have new shoots and roots and a new plant with a really chunky trunk. Many bonsai growers use this method to get a good size trunk almost instantly.

It takes longer time for new sprouts as compared to normal /medium sizes cuttings. However if successful the bigger branches will make you forget how long you have waited because they are masterpiece and obsolutely satisfying

I’m glad I found this method so I can try something different with the bag. My mother has a variegated bougainvillea that we have tried to propagate for years with no success. My father who is no longer with us bought it for her, so propagating it and having one for myself would be special. I’ll keep you posted if this works.

I made a small aeroponic system to grow a small salsa garden but by accident I found that it also makes cuttings root super fast. I had stuck some bougainvillea cuttings in there when my tomato plant got too big and had to be moved outdoors. I was shocked how fast it rooted. Now I use it just for propagating.

Hi David. really enjoyed your video. I've loved Bougainvillea's since I was a kid in Argentina (We called them Santa Rita). I'm 38 now and I bought one online and it came with the hard woody stem and a couple of branching leaves. Well, the USPS guy left in in my mailbox for a couple of days at 32 degrees. Needless to say, I was left with just the woody stem. I persisted. Watered it and within a couple of weeks, 3 new chutes were growing. I kept at it for another month and decided to move it to a bigger pot. (Rookie mistake). I was careful enough not to disturb the roots and it's been another month and it's still "ok". It has however seemed to have stopped growing. Not only that, but I moved it to a sunny window side and when the sun hits it, the leaves appear soft and droopy. When the sun goes away, the firm up again. Any thoughts on how to keep it growing and what's going on with the sun?

It sounds like the root system is damaged or still immature. I would watch and wait. Don't over water.

Now how on earth did I miss this Goodstream?!! Well, I'm here and totally absorbing all the facts stated here and learning how to propagate Bougainvillea, 😂it is a bit hard to pronounce at first but maybe the name we give it here in Mexico is better? Camelina, my dad established 3 purple and one red and they are growing GOOD, just this day I trimmed some of the thorny vines, and thought is it possible to establish new plants from cuttings? So I came here and lots of videos but why go to the others when I see you my mentor, David The Good showing us how to go about it! Don't know if you know but the red or purple flowers, 2 flowers with a rind of sweet lime or lima(the lime is round, looks like a small orange while the lima is somewhat bell-shaped with a round protuberance at the end), well you steep the flowers and the piece of rind in hot water and you have an infusion to help you recuperate from your cold, flu or sniffles. Gonna try your method tomorrow with some cuttings, well the totally green one no good but the other 3 have a brown, barklike texture and plant these guard plants to protect our home! , Thanks for sharing and greetings for Miss Rachel, the Good Children, including #10 and you Sir David!

I've been replanting little sprigs of mint that come from restaurants :D I generally strip down the bottom most leaves to expose the inner bark, and cut the bottom at an angle, then wrap it in a napkin and soak it with water until we get home. If I know we'll be out of the house for quite a while, sometimes I'll put them in a small plastic bag as well, blow my Co2 into it and tie it off, making sure it's sitting upright. Get home, take a really small stick and poke a hole in the soil, put in the twig, gently pinch soil around it, water it in, and quite often they regrow :D One time, I left it in a plastic bag outside in the shade for quite a while, and it actually started to root in the wet paper napkin :D

Glad you guys have a large property to plant those on. In a neighborhood like mine I can’t believe people plant these. They are out of control! I had two that took me years to finally kill. People say the roots are fragile and stuff and I have gone to town on the stumps with axes, hammers, chainsaws and they still keep growing back! Be careful where you put them because they grow so fast and take over everything around them

I have a love/hate relationship with these. They're so pretty, and little birds love to make protected nests in them. (I love the birds) the thorns on these are so bad though. Make sure to wear long sleeves when trimming these...And definitely don't plant them near a driveway like someone I know did. (Okay, it was me)...the thorns on a mature plant will go through a car tire, and stab right through the bottom of thin flip-flops. Anyways, I had no idea these could be propagated. Really cool. 👍

Maia, I was going to post the same question but I see no response for a year so...not hopeful in finding out what he did. I do mine in larger plastic tubs w/drainage holes in the bottom (6" of sand and 2" of soil, then covered in plastic sheeting) )and it works great. I would assume that these should have a couple of holes as well.

@@deejeff8846 , thats what I was thinking but looking at other videos and then doing it myself, about 25 plants in 5 different containers, it works with drainage holes. Didn't have to add water over the 3 months they were covered. Drain holes were flat on the ground which allowed excess moisture out but little air in.

I Use a bit thicker cuttings and just pop them in the shade until they bud. Once they are established I transition them to the sun. More of a reason for cutting off the lease is because the plant will be sending energy to those leaves instead of to growing roots which it needs to do first. If it grows leaves with no roots it’s going to die.I think leaving a small one is a better idea than cutting a big one just seems like it would take less energy but I’m not sure I know flowers take the most energy

Love the pink watering can.hehe How did you go? Did it grow? Could you do an 'one month after' vid? I've tried this many times on different plants but weeks later after I remove the plastic bags. They die 😭

Sansi, if you are still reading this....don't just remove the bag. Cut a couple of slits several inches long in the bag and leave for a week or so. This lets the plants get used to the outside air, humidity. After a week cut even more slits and leave for another week. Then come back and take off the bag. That eases them in to the outside world. This has worked for me in South Florida.

Hi, How are you doing? It's a good video about propagation. I still have one doubt that. Do I need to put the propagating pot in the direct sunlight.

No - sun is too hot when you have a plastic cover. Keep it in the shade.

If all of the cuttings take root in the same pot, how do you separate them when it is time to re-pot? Is it ok to keep them all together when re-potting

how often do you water the cuttings after you cover with plastic bag?
@jacqdanieles
@jacqdanieles 3 жыл бұрын
You will not need to water for at least a couple of weeks. The medium only needs to be _moist,_ not wet, at all times. Too much water will rot the cuttings. Sand as a medium works well. Another tip is to keep the cuttings in a rooting hormone solution for 2-3 days before planting in the medium.

This is perfect thank you! I live in Florida and have a few of these and want more, but they’re so expensive to buy at a nursery. So I will try this. Any videos on propagating desert roses from clippings? I followed a video I found on here and wasn’t successful, so any tips would be great! Thank you!

Desert rose tends to rot if the soil is too moist - keep it almost, but not quite, dry.
