The pothos vine, also known as devil's ivy or golden pothos (Epipremnum aureum), is very easy to take care of and looks great year-round.
I've tried various methods of propagating devil's ivy/pothos plants and covered the most successful (and the most prolific!) method here. I also try to cover the important aspects of pothos propagation in a clear and concise way. I hope you will try this method too. Good luck, and thanks for watching!
Pothos are especially good as hanging plants placed in high spots. Pothos vines are especially beneficial indoors. They clean the air more than most other plants. They absorb harmful gases like formaldehyde, xylene, and benzene, that may come off of wall paint, furniture polish and other synthetic materials. If you or a friend has a pothos vine you can easily propagate it and add some beauty to your house, breathe cleaner air, or give it away to loved ones.

My first attempt, seven months ago, faired me several new starters. However, I also ended up with two long bare vines, with leaves at the end only. This was on the original plant. So today, I cut the leaves off the end and placed them in water, removed the long bare vines, cutting up and attempting to start fresh in water. Thank you, again, sir.

Well done Thomas Ratliff! Those long bare vines occasionally happen and I do the same with them. Besides providing more plants it also rejuvenates the donor plant too. Good luck and I'm glad you liked the video. Thank you, as well, for letting me know.

Hey @@akmalwayskeepmoving8016 , sorry your order got cancelled. The devil's ivy/pothos is quite a common plant. Thank you so much for this! Short and to-the-point, with a lot of information that others leave out! As whatever the opposite of a green thumb is, I really can't thank you enough. 1) Will they keep growing okay if I keep them planted in water? I am not a fan of soil, as it attracts gnats. 2) Should I always be using tap water for my plants? Would this advice change for water that is treated with a water softener?
@AGoodLife
@AGoodLife 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dude Bro! I'm sure you'll do great. The green thumb thing comes with time, just keep at it! 1-They will do fine in water for a relatively long time. They'll survive and keep growing in water for about a couple of months but eventually they'll want to be planted in soil. 2-Tap water is fine, you don't need to use anything else. Water softeners should not be an issue either. (They just remove calcium and magnesium, and only add a negligible amount of sodium.) Good luck!

I live in a tropical area (Guyana) and I have left my pothos outside in partial shade for a few months now. They grow faster out there.
@AGoodLife
@AGoodLife Жыл бұрын
Hi Akailah Gordon, yes, pothos would love it there, no wonder they grow faster! :) They love it a bit too much that they are considered an "invasive" plant there, so it's best to not let it take root in the wild soil, so that they don't take over and replace native plants. Take care!

Thank you! I'll be working on this tonight. I wonder if snipping the tip of the leaf on the end stalk would divert plant energy from growing the leaf to growing the roots. When I would propagate cannabis, I got exactly that tip and it helped. I wonder if it would do the same here.
@AGoodLife
@AGoodLife 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ross Benevent, when rooting new plants, extra leaves (and extra leaf area) can be a bit of a burden on the non-existent roots, so tip cutting may have some benefits when rooting certain plants but I've never heard of it being used for pothos. (I'm not familiar with cannabis propagation, but when looking into leaf tip cutting I came across this, so maybe it's not necessarily beneficial there either: vanessa-nielsen.com/cut-leaf-tips-of-clones/ ) The pothos propagation method in this video is highly successful anyway, and I'm guessing whether you cut the tips off of leaves or not is not going to make much of a positive difference (but it may have a negative impact.) Either way, good luck, and please let me know if you find a significant difference!

Might be a silly question but is each cutting a separate plant once it’s started growing? Or do we pot it on into its own individual pot. I’ve recently taken a cutting from my daughters and have approximately 8 stems in water at the minute. Thanks for a brilliant video.
@AGoodLife
@AGoodLife 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Tea_and_thyme_2012! And no, that's not a silly question :) Technically, yes, each cutting/leaf will be one individual/independent plant, but even when you buy them at a store, pothos will always have multiple plants/stems in each pot. So depending on the size of your pots, I would either make 2 small pots with 4 leaves/plants in each, or plant all 8 in 1 pot if it is about 15cm/6inches in diameter. Good luck!

This video is excellent, thank you!!! I'm wondering if the stalk ever ended up rooting? (i have a pothos with very long vines and unfortunately 2 of the vines are damaged. i'm trying to decide what my options are with the damaged vines; make a bunch of small cuttings to propagate as shown in your video, or cut the vine off and try to root the whole piece, or just hope the vine will maintain a good connection to the roots.)
@AGoodLife
@AGoodLife 4 жыл бұрын
Hi E, yes, it did eventually. But the success rate of leaves cut as shown in the video is much higher and the longer the stem, the less likely it is to root. If it is much longer than 3 leaves or so, you would have to remove extra leaves anyway because a rootless stem can't really sustain too many leaves on it, which may defeat the purpose of having a long stem anyway. So in my opinion, you're better off rooting your leaves like in the video and start with new plant(s) that are dense with more stems. Either way, good luck!

@AGoodLife
@AGoodLife Жыл бұрын
Hi Tina Howard, sorry you're not seeing a root yet. Your leaf should have started growing a root by now but as long as it's green and not rotting, you can wait; some take longer than others. And remember to change the water every few days to make sure the water has enough oxygen (you can also stir it up quickly to oxygenate the water.) I'm glad you're trying to propagate and hopefully you'll see a root soon. Good luck!

Hi. Do you put pothos water cuttings near a bright sunny window?
@AGoodLife
@AGoodLife 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Nadine P. Simmons, when they're rooting in water, warmth is more important than light, and too much or direct light would dry them out (since they don't have developed roots yet to hydrate them well.) Medium light is best; you don't want somewhere that's too dark or with direct sunlight. Good luck, and happy propagating! :)

Hi boonie, I know they will be fine in water for at least a couple of months but as far as I know they will eventually want to be in soil. If you like, you can keep them in water until you see signs of stress or rotting and let me know here how long it took to get to that point... for science! :) Either way, don't forget to occasionally change the water.

Thank you for the vid, is pretty clear and informative. I’m in the process now, have all in water and waiting...living in Miami (talking about tropical) and with the intention to propagate them outside, under the carport. You don’t recommend that but I’m making a wall of pothos to enjoy the fresh and clean air. Do you have a suggestion for my house plan? I made a path with wire lines and put the vine around it, kind of slow I realized that’s why I’m preparing these other plants. Thanks for your answer.
@AGoodLife
@AGoodLife 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the positive feedback 11aloalo! You might want to check with local sources (like garden centers) in Miami about planting pothos outdoors, maybe they would change your mind :) But besides the whole pothos being invasive issue, pothos usually grows single stalks and you might have to propagate and plant many other pothos plants to achieve the look you have in mind. I'm thinking there would be much more suitable vines for what you want to accomplish. Either way, good luck!

@AGoodLife
@AGoodLife 5 жыл бұрын
Hi! Sure, as long as your plant is alive it should continue to grow. Pothos vines usually don't grow new stems, they generally have a single stem that keeps getting longer and longer with new leaves, but as long as you leave a few leaves for the "mother" plant, you can use the other leaves to propagate new plants. I hope this helps. Good luck!

Hi Mell Merc, how much of the tip is dried off? And is it healthy up until that point? If so, you can cut off the dried parts down to the healthy part. Cutting some of the vine length shouldn't really hurt the plant so I'm guessing whatever is going on has another reason. Good luck!

So a friend of mine had a pothos, she accidentally broke about an 8 foot or so section while pruning. She gifted if you me and I am currently trying to propagate the entire section in my fish tank. It’s starting to droop and not looking as healthy as it should. Do I need to break it down in to smaller sections? Is this because there is no longer a root system?
@AGoodLife
@AGoodLife 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ryan, sorry to hear about that... Yes, it needs to be cut into small pieces if you want to propagate, and you're right, it is because there is not a root system, and without a healthy root system, large sections cannot survive. The cut part of the stem will still absorb some water, but that will not be enough to sustain a large stem/plant. It is possible to keep stems with a 2-3 leaves on it alive too, but the success rate will go down some. Shorter the better, like in the video. Good luck!

Hey Dark Angel, they really should root first before they go in soil. But since they're already in soil, you could either; pull them out, rinse them off, and put them in water until they root (which I think is the better option), or you could keep them in soil and keep the soil really wet for about a couple of weeks and hope that they will root in soil. This could work as well but I think the former option has a better chance. Either way, good luck!

Hi simone pradhan , the size of the pot depends on how many rooted leaves you have to plant. I would plant about 5 leaves in a 10cm/4inch radius pot, and about 15 leaves in double that radius.
