Thank you Todd. You are gardening in my zone which is helpful. Your video is the best I've seen for propagating raspberries from suckers.

This "tipping" of the berry plants into soil to encourage it to grow its own root system is VERY awesome!!! I have heard this from NO other channel, but yours!!! THANK YOU!!! This is my first visit to your channel, and I am hoping to come back to listen to more of your videos. Great video and good teaching!!!

Interesting. I did everything you did without watching the video. I have never grown raspberries before but plant division is one of the best techniques for propagation.

Tipping will work on raspberries too as long as you cut off the leaves you're burying. just leave some stems and it should root in about 3 weeks at which point you can cut that stem off the mother plant
@greatescapefarms

I'll have to try that. Thanks!

Also instead of composting what you trim off of the suckers after replanting you could use to make raspberry leaf tea

As a bigginer gardener can I ask which soil do rasberrys best grow in? As I think I've previously used ericaceous compost mixed in with normal soil and had a really good crop? But now looking at more videos I can't seen to find this anywhere
@greatescapefarms

Raspberries like soil that is more acid than alkaline. They absolutely love a lot of compost and specifically leaf litter around their base.

Do I do this when there small I have one that’s just coming out of the ground. And how do I stop the leaves going black
@greatescapefarms
@greatescapefarms 4 жыл бұрын
The leaves will go back if you have more top than bottom - what I mean by that is if you have few roots and a lot of stalk. This is normal and happens to me as well, but once the roots are established, it straightens itself out.

They are garden/work gloves from the hardware store. I believe the orange ones are from Home Depot and I have the exact same thing (but they are blue) from Lowes.

@@greatescapefarms thank you! I got some from amazon that looked sturdy and somewhat like yours (after seeing your video) but unfortunately the thorns go right through if I grab the stalk...so definitely need to find something better!
@greatescapefarms

@@deplorabledixie2834 The gloves I used worked for the (my) raspberry thorns but would not have worked with blackberry thorns or rose thorns. You'll have to experiment with gloves based on the thorns on your plants.

@@greatescapefarms That's good to know. So far I'm only dealing with wild raspberry plants, the thorns are little but so piercingly sharp and they made it through the leather fingers of my amazon gloves. Thanks for all your help, I'm gonna try to find your exact gloves and see if they work a little better!

Why can they not be replanted right away? No strong root system? I replanted 3 suckers last year directly after digging up and they all died.
@len897
@len897 4 жыл бұрын
You should try giving them a transparent cover like plastic to maintain high humidity, temperature and minimum sunglight. You should see success !
@greatescapefarms
@greatescapefarms 3 жыл бұрын
You can transplant them directly into the ground. The mistake most make is they put the suckers in full sun and there is not root system to keep them hydrated - so they dehydrate and die out. You would need to keep them moist on a regular basis and in mostly shade. After about a month you can back off on the water and allow more sun. In a pot, I can move them to as much shade as they need and put them in a place that I remember to water them regularly.

When will you plant the sucker that you removed and repotted into the garden? If you don’t remove the sucker will it produce fruit next year?

I usually sell the suckers off in my nursery. If I left them in the ground, they will fruit in place.

Dry the leaves. Use them for yummi tea. Don't compost them. They are rich in magnesium and good for reproductive system.

If you leave the suckers, they will grow - as Gregory points out. The issue with that is they will continue to spread and spread. If you have a large area and can tolerate the spread, then by all means let them go - they will be happy.

Why throw away that big one you cut off? Just take off the two bottom leaf nodes and put it in a pot to see if it grow roots
@greatescapefarms

That may work. With well established raspberry plants there is usually enough excess that you can just take the best of the best.
