Every time I prune my raspberries and blackberries, rather than discarding the part I pruned off, I plop it in a pot of compost and in a few weeks I have a new plant. Also, if te cane is too long and it can touch the ground, I take the tip and bury it in the ground and hold it down with a brick or huge rock. Again, in a few weeks, the tip has grown roots. I then cut it at a good length and again have a new plant. I also make sure I cut a cane down to the ground after it fruits. It makes it easier to prune as you go along.

I don't own any black raspberry varieties as it is not recommended to be in close proximity with Reds/Yellows for disease reasons. However, tons of Purple. Why did you wait so long to prune your Black's? They were huge! I would have done it a lot sooner so you have more time and the plant has more energy to produce the laterals. Purples I prune off 2-3 inches of the tip when they are reaching just over 3 ft. The everbearing(fall) crop too is different because its going to depend on your growing zone and the variety. Some can be harvested towards the end of August and some all the way towards the end of September. Our first frost date is just a few weeks or less into October, so some of our Fall Raspberries actually have a much smaller harvest in the fall then compared to the following summer.

So this is the first year my blackberry and raspberry plants fruited. I planted both 2 years ago. I'm assuming the canes that don't produce this summer are one year canes (for both plants). So I should cut down to the ground all the canes that fruited (or will fruit this summer) and prune all the one year canes (the ones that don't fruit) to 4ft for blackberries and 3 ft for raspberries? I'm not sure what variety I planted...

Black and purple raspberries don’t all fruit on second year bilateral canes. Primocane purple raspberries do exist. It’s important to know if your raspberries are summer bearing (bilateral fruiting), everbearing (bilateral and primocane fruiting), or fall bearing (primocane fruiting).

Is this the same regardless of zone? It's July 26th... my raspberries are pretty much done. They we hard to get to and the birds got most of them. My husband isn't knowledgeable about pruning so early this spring he cut the tips of last year cane's at about 5 feet. Then, once spring hit we had a ton of new growth from the ground all around the row of last year's cane. So all the berries were in the middle of all this new non-bearing growth. Hard to get to except for the birds and the bees. I really want to chop them all down to the ground and start over... but it sound like I need the keep all of this years new growth and cut down all branches that are brown wood and bearing. Is that right? Cut them to the ground? When should I do that if I'm in zone 6B?

They're a hot mess and all tangled together and kind of falling and growing horizontally rather than vertically. If I understood correctly, you said to basically prune them to about 4 ft tall? Should I stake them as well? And can I root the cuttings I take off? I've only ever rooted plants that came from runners or rooted while still attached to the plant itself.
