I get good results with ALL my cuttings by placing potting mix in a small growing container, prepare cuttings as outline here, and then putting one cutting in each small plant container (4"round x 8"tall). I soak the soil well. Then, I take a recycled plastic seltzer bottle, remove the label, remove the bottom, keep the cap on, and I place it over the plant and snug it down inside the container. I put all of the pots in recycled nursey trays and sit them down in a shady area on my patio and let them alone for an entire month. No need to ever water them because when the water evaporates from the pot it collects on the inside of the plastic bottle and rolls back down on the cuttings. I've been doing this for years, reusing many of the same pots, soil, and bottles. Zero cost, lots of success, and many, many happy plants! I give them away to family and friends and plant a lot on my land.

My rose of Sharon is 168 years old the flowers are pink and just before the flowers die they turn purple. Proper gated from the mother plant. Mother plant can from England horticultural society in the 1800’s.

These things are not picky. I just cut a long branch off, 2-3 feet, and stick it in the ground. No rooting hormone either. Just pull the leaves off the part going into the ground. Have not had 1 die on me yet unless I accidentally run it over with the lawnmower. Which I have done lol.

They do spread quickly as I have found out, so watch out for that. But they are beautiful and great for hummingbirds, butterflies, hummingbird moths, and bees! And the best part, I didn't need any sugar water for attracting them! Just water fountains did the trick. Here's the thing. Once you have one in your yard, the original plants do keep planting more! Never without. They can just get into places where you don't want them, though.

They spread like weeds. We have a row down the length of our property and hundreds, if not thousands of sprouts are always shooting up. At this point, I might as well let it just grow into a hedge.

@greatescapefarms

You can take a cutting as soon as the new growth snaps (not bend like rubber) in the summer. For my area that is usually mid to late June.

What is the growing medium that you use in your cutting bed. Also, later in the fall will you remove the shade cloth?
@greatescapefarms
@greatescapefarms 3 жыл бұрын
The growing medium in the cutting bed is concrete sand. I will not remove the shade cloth in the fall. However, in the video I was using 75% shade cloth and I have since found that 50% shade cloth gives a better success rate for cuttings.

Hi what do I do ones they have some since august this year and they have new leaves and I think they could be transplanted.but I live in Ontario Canada what do you suggest.please answer 🍁
@greatescapefarms
@greatescapefarms Жыл бұрын
You can transplant them but wait until they are dormant. For your area this would be between Halloween and Thanksgiving. Just wait until all the leaves have fallen off. Give it one more week after that and then move it where you want. Make sure it is in the ground and not a pot. If your plant is in a pot it may not over winter because the roots will get too cold. If I need to overwinter something in the pot, I'll bury the whole pot in the ground and dig it up in the spring to sell it or do whatever I need with it. Best case scenario is to put it in the ground where you want it to grow and get big.

@susanhammond2893 5 жыл бұрын
what medium do you plant them in. when can they come out from the shade & humidity ? Thanks
@greatescapefarms
@greatescapefarms 3 жыл бұрын
I take them out of the sand when they are dormant and pot them up (in potting soil) because I sell them. However, you can plant them right in the soil where they are going to be permanently.

How would you recommend starting seeds?
@greatescapefarms
@greatescapefarms 3 жыл бұрын
I personally have not started rose of sharon seeds. Here is an article on how to do it. According to the author, you pretty much leave them on the ground over winter and they start growing in the spring. www.creeklinehouse.com/how-to-propagate-rose-of-sharon/

Nice video. My neighbor has a large rose of sharon here in NE Wisconsin. Can I dig out a small piece of root to pot up now while they are still dormant?
@greatescapefarms
@greatescapefarms 3 жыл бұрын
If you have a sucker with a root you can usually transplant it when it is dormant. If it is the root only, that will likely not work.

What would happen if we prune it in the early fall? Reason I’m asking is because we had a lot of heavy wet snow last year that did a lot of damage to the tall branches. I was hoping to cut it back to help it through this coming winter.
@LuLuSprings
@LuLuSprings 5 жыл бұрын
I think if you can wait till first frost that would be best my best guess. I've pruned my back twice , but I always have done it early spring, .in early fall, mine still have flowers......good luck !
@greatescapefarms
@greatescapefarms 3 жыл бұрын
You are best to wait until the leaves drop and it goes dormant. In most areas the leaves fall at least a month before the snow gets too heavy.

For the propagation bed I use concrete sand because it allows the water to drain quickly and not linger and root the new roots.

Use your fingernail and scratch a little of the bark off on the smaller limbs. If it is green inside it is alive and well. If there is not green try a couple of different areas. If you don't find any green it is likely dead.
