I’ve never used rooting hormone and I’ve got a huge yard full of salvias that I’ve propagated from a few mother plants.

I just found this while looking for help in overwintering my hot lips. Two questions: should I bring in my 2 hot lips plants, Richmond, VA, Zone 7. Also, please post the link to you’re results in propagating this cuttings. Thank you!

Hi Carolyn! 👋 Great questions. Where you live, in Zone 7, is the lowest zone Hot Lips is rated to be hardy to, so you should be ok, if your area is forecasted to have an "average" winter with "normal" cold temperatures. If your area is forecasted to have a colder-than-usual winter, then you should definitely move (if in containers or pots) or protect your Hot Lips plants. If in the ground, you can place a cloche or small hoop-house or cold-frame over and around each plant to keep the frost and snow off them and help have a warmer temp for them to grow in over the winter. Hope that helps. Oh, the results-video for our salvia cuttings is here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4fUlnWlpdSaZ9k Thanks for watching and email us with any follow-up questions at seanandallison@spokengarden.com ! 😊

My prediction is the rooting hormone in soil coming in first, soil without hormone second and water third. Roots grown in water are brittle and struggle when transitioning to soil

Hi I’ve just propagated my first cuttings, following you guys. Thank you Now do I put them into the greenhouse? Or in doors?

Hi Kevin! 👋 That is fantastic! Woohoo! We are making new plants (and having fun doing it😁). This is exciting; are your cuttings from a 'Hot Lips' plant too, or a different salvia? Since your new plants are under A LOT of stress right now, definitely put them in a semi shaded, fully shaded area with very low extreme exposure to heat/cold/wind and anything else that could hurt their rooting and survivability. Think of your cuttings as having a perpetual 'spa day' with as little stress as possible until they root. Hope that helps and thank you for watching AND following. Let us know how your cuttings do and what results you get. 😎

I tried this . The ones in water, did root, but roots fell off when I took them out of the water. The ones in the root powder, dried up and died. I'm going to try again
